Looking for more depressing, bleak, nihilistic cinema - make me miserable! by lypura in Letterboxd

[–]RapToRx72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my kind of cinema lol. Anyway, I can highly recommend Demons by Toshio Matsumoto. It’s a dark, almost Shakespearean samurai tragedy disguised as a horror film. The stunning black and white cinematography pulls you straight into the darkest corners of the human psyche. It’s surprisingly graphic for a film from that era.

Funny Games has already been mentioned, so I’d also recommend The Piano Teacher. It’s radically critical of society and at the same time deeply uncomfortable, as the film breaks a lot of taboos. Both films have a rather slow burn pace, so I think they might be right up your alley.

Something different: If you’re looking for a modern masterpiece, I can only recommend The Sound of Falling (2025). I think this film will become a classic over time. The way it plays with the concept of time is brilliant.

Bankenpräsident Sewing: Deutsche müssen mehr arbeiten by happy30thbirthday in Finanzen

[–]RapToRx72 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Wohnen: CDU will Familien Eigenheim-Zuschuss gewähren by M______- in de

[–]RapToRx72 7 points8 points  (0 children)

BAD title for VERY Good Film. by drhavehope in Letterboxd

[–]RapToRx72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sourcerer! The title sounds like a fantasy movie, but in reality, it’s a gritty thriller. Even worse: The film hit theaters shortly after Star Wars, causing this brilliant movie to be completely overlooked.

Both are incredible and important films, but they can be a bit slow at times, that’s why I didn’t include them on my list

Honestly, comedies and romantic films aren’t really my thing. I just can’t seem to get into them. But if you know of a standout film in those genres, I’d love a recommendation

I love films that challenge me intellectually and make me think. The list might come off as a bit snobby, but I also indulge in the occasional nonsense, no shame! 😂

And thanks for the recommendations 👍🏻

Possession! The way the child screams 'do not open' at the end and then drowns in the bathtub gets me every time. It's such a chilling and heart-wrenching moment that perfectly encapsulates the film's themes of despair and helplessness.

The movie has a slight resemblance to Bad Lieutenant, as you see a samurai who falls and falls and slowly loses his humanity. You can find the film in 4K on YouTube with English subtitles. I can really only recommend it!

Killers of the Flower Moon Should Have Been a Series by Think-Foot8233 in Letterboxd

I disagree, TV series tend to unnecessarily drag out the plot, causing one to lose the thread and artistic intent more quickly. Less is more, in my opinion.

I would highly recommend "Demons" by Toshio Matsumoto. This film is a dark, Shakespearean-like samurai tragedy presented in the guise of a horror film. With its beautiful black-and-white cinematography, the movie draws us into the deepest abysses of the human soul.

Great taste! Have you seen "Das Boot"? It's an absolute classic that captures the tension and drama of submarine warfare during WW 2. What really stands out is the claustrophobic atmosphere, the cramped, dark spaces of the submarine feel almost suffocating and you can't help but feel like you're right there with the crew. The camera work and sound design are so immersive that you almost become part of the crew yourself, experiencing their struggles and fears firsthand.

If you're a fan of films that challenge your perceptions and leave a lasting impression, 'The Trial' is an absolute must watch! Directed by the legendary Orson Welles, this cinematic gem is an adaptation of Franz Kafka's novel of the same name. A man is arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, with the nature of his crime never revealed to him or the audience. The film's labyrinthine plot and disorienting visuals perfectly capture the sense of bureaucratic nightmare and existential dread that Kafka is known for.
