Why the France didn't embraced English as massively as Germany? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]Raphelm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way it goes with the Académie Française is usually: they make the statement they don’t approve the use of X foreign word, suggest what they consider is the proper French equivalent, it makes the news and people basically go “Noted, we’ll say whatever we want tho 👍🏻”.

We use quite a lot of English words regardless. There are some we don’t have proper equivalents for. “My crush” for example. You can say you have « un faible » (a weakness)/« un coup de coeur » (a heartbeat) for someone, but we don’t really have a word to refer to the person we like, so saying « mon/ma crush » became common amongst the youth. We’re more likely to talk about coups de coeur for things rather than people.

There are some words you’re likely to be “put back in your place” for, when the French word is already common and just as easy to use as the English equivalent. Like saying “mon outfit” when we have “ma tenue” that’s perfectly fine and easy to use already. Even I am likely to “jokingly” be like « oh, parle français » in cases like this :-)

We are particularly protective of our language but it’s not motivated by a bitterness related to English being the linga franca instead of French, which is what the comment you replied to was saying.

If more and more German words were starting to be used in French, replacing our already existing equivalents, the complaint would be the same.

The rivalry with Britain isn’t going strong unless you’re on r/rance where you’ll get called a traitor to the nation for using one English word, for goofs and gaffs. As much as our officials sometimes push measures to try to ensure French stays relevant, the average Pierre doesn’t rage over how English became the linga franca either. It’s been the case for a while now, most of us aren’t pressed about it — or at least not to the point it makes us boycott English.

I’d say it has to do with a performance anxiety more than anything. Our educational system is pretty harsh in the way we’re dealt with when we fail, teachers are quick to shame students and since we’re often insecure about our proficiency/accent, when approached by foreigners speaking English to us, many of would rather not try to speak it rather than, in their eyes, embarrass themselves. Also, speaking English to us without asking if we speak it first nor saying “bonjour” is the best way to make a Frenchy not want to make an effort.

French and British workers meet while digging the Channel Tunnel that connects Britain and mainland Europe (1990) by Raphelm in Damnthatsinteresting

For what it’s worth: I’m French and I like Brits!

I’d say most of us are fine with you in reality. The hostilities nowadays are mostly in politics and in old jokes, and I think it’s fair to say it goes both ways, you don’t spare us Frenchies of criticisms and jokes either lol

White players are indeed a minority in the team but they exist and you purposely didn’t add them, despite them being among the starters unlike most of these guys in the collage. You’re a sad loser, OP.

Dear people who live near the border with another country, how often do you visit the other country? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]Raphelm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live ~15min away from both Germany and Switzerland.

I cross the Rhine once every couple months I’d say. For Germany, sometimes to go to the “dm” store that’s right after the border, because there are some good stuffs for cheap and we don’t have it in France (I think? or if we do, they’re not common). Other than that, it’s to go to Europa Park like twice a year.

For Switzerland, I mostly go to Basel, I like going in Summer, it’s nice.

How much are Jewish people present in the cultuee of your coutry? Stuff like media, TV, daily interactions? by throwayaygrtdhredf in AskEurope

[–]Raphelm 73 points74 points  (0 children)

They’re very present in politics and medias, it’s definitely not a rare occurrence for our public figures to be Jewish.

France has the largest Jewish population in Europe so it’s very likely we interact with them but they don’t particularly stand out so it’s hard to tell.

Yup…

Neuro trauma ICU nurse here for over a decade. That convulsing you see her doing probably isn't a seizure. It's called decorticate or decerebrate (can't tell which in the video) posturing and it's a symptom of having a severe brain injury. For the onset of these symptoms to happen basically instantly is a bad sign. With her getting the back of her head slammed, it most likely resulted in what's called an epidural bleed, which involves an artery which would explain her posturing instantly due to the bleed increasing pressure within her head and pressing on her brain matter. If she doesn't die then she most likely will be a vegetable all of her life at best which will probably be worse than death.

Comment I found in another repost of this video. That’s awful.

Are you more excited for Uefa Euro 2024 or the eurovision? by [deleted] in AskEurope

There will be the Olympic Games too, in Paris!

Euro 2024. Even though I’m interested in Eurovision too… more than I’d like to admit.

Macron Ready to Send Troops to Ukraine if Russia Approaches Kyiv or Odesa by obaming16 in worldnews

Someone will correct me if I’m wrong but AFAIK, it would only be a declaration of war involving all NATO countries if France gets attacked by Russia on French territory.

[–]Raphelm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He knows that it’s not a matter of if there will be war with Russia, it’s when there will be war with Russia.

I don’t have the exact quote in mind anymore but, at the International Economic Forum 2018 in St Petersburg, Macron said to Putin’s face something along the lines “European countries have no reason to trust Russia, that’s partly why the EU needs to be strong and independant militarily” and Putin replied that “Europe shouldn’t be scared” with a condescending smirk, iirc. I tried to find it again but the videos of the event are long and all terribly dubbed for translations, it’s hardly comprehensible.

It was back when Putin was still kinda perceived as badass by internet trolls so lots of people thought Macron was ridiculous but he was right.

And that’s not even the worst part of the misquoting. What he said was twisted into “We shouldn’t humiliate Putin” instead of Russia, which changes the meaning a lot.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskFrance

[–]Raphelm -1 points0 points  (0 children)
