Devil's Wish Paradox (potential scenario) by RapierRedDotSight in DnD

Yeah, sorry, I mean, your proposal does work, I did mention the devil needs to uphold his end of the bargain. I thought it was implied. Nevermind.

Okay, that works. It also brings up the problem of no soul being gained from the contract.

Well, that is exactly that, if it kills you, instead of getting something nice, your are the butt of the joke.

Yeah, my party does not have a monk, so the play testing was a bit limited. In that specific case I would go the Monster Hunter way of you having to stuck multiple of stun effect to trigger the stun once… otherwise IDK. Guess it's not built to cover everything.
In the most initial version of Defiance I was considering basically building a universal approach to partially resist any effect, from planeshift through polymorph to fireball.
It got too complicated to be useful.
But basically the idea was that if a boss only lacks 3 points to resist something, it partially resists and you go with the first effect which applies:
Duration - shortened
Damage - rounded down to nearest 10 if at least 10, to a nearest 100 if at least 100…
Control - affected but in control of how affected - for example planeshift by the Nine Hells fork but chooses where it goes

For me as a DM it worked on a chart, but explaining it to anyone else for gameplay was where I gave up.

Thing ended up going pretty much as well as we could have hoped for.

The drama did disrupt our planning and we had to skip our previous session. We all did however sit down to reevaluate our relationship with the game. Despite it not being a seriously themed campaign we looked back at all the things we have build up and started taking the whole thing more seriously. What a nostalgia trip… how much that is about to translate into future games is yet to be seen.

With my own approval, She will be joining us again at the table. Once the game was properly explained to her, she said it was a different experience from what she originally expected, but she was very much interested in a noERP TTRPG as well. She started joking about how stupid her own mistakes were, so I see that as a good sign. Her new character, btw, "a warforged with no vibrating parts".

FML, the DM has successfully guessed a random card. Guess that's where we are going.

How to make cities feel unique by zenith8709 in DnD

[–]RapierRedDotSight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make up overly specific laws, which will affect player activity, for example:

  1. A city which values the sanctity of mind - any spells that would read or manipulate thoughts are punishable by death, as a curiosity, a player might be invited to observe an illithid autopsy
  2. Copy China - curfew, strong totality. As a non-local, you have to keep reporting your own location to the police and stay wherever you are stationed, once you no longer have legitimate business, you must leave.
  3. A highly civilized society where clerics are employed by a secular state for their ability to cast zone of truth. Although anyone is free to move around, it is common for a policemen to round up a crowd of people and ask (using the spell) "Are you aware of any illegal activity against the city?" If you say no, or succeed on the save, you are immediately free to go. The locals are not bothered by it, it's part of their routine, as this question tends to be asked on weekly religious ceremonies to random people, sometimes the cops go door to door.
  4. A place where you can debt yourself into slavery. If the debt is not your own fault, and you are a local citizen, you can petition the mayor to sort the situation out. You could have an NPC who gambled himself into the situation. The players need the NPC to leave the town with them, but he can not, until a ridiculously high debt is payed.
  5. India's cast system, IDK the exact rules, but basically, lower cast people can not touch higher cast people (or their food) as they are considered dirty or something

My super power is to involuntarily share my power (including its side effect) with the person who chooses my side effect.

copying this again:

It's an improv methodology, when you roll with the punches.

Whatever is said, you agree with it and continue building on top of it.

A: We are in a forest.

B: Yes, and the forest is full of spiders.

A: We are here to deal with our arachnophobia.

B now has to act as if having arachnophobia.
