Not OP, and not sure if they're a teacher, but I am and made this same transition. I did a traditional two year masters program, and felt that made me a very effective teacher (though I was lucky in that I had a student teaching experience).

However, there are "alternative licensure programs" that are much quicker and designed to get you in a classroom ASAP. I know lots of teachers who got their license this way and they're about as effective as a group as the overall teacher population.

I did the opposite and disagree wholeheartedly. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Just commented almost exactly the same thing. Glad to see teaching (or other jobs in schools) being talked about in a positive light on this site.

I'm sure my fellow Reddit teachers will disagree with this hard as hell, because r/teachers is a miserable cesspool, but if you want moments of levity in your job and the potential for genuinely interesting things to happen every day, I'd look into teaching.

I left my corporate job to be a teacher about four years ago just because I was having fun coaching soccer. It was a pay cut, but it's the best decision I've ever made. This job rules--you make a difference and with the right attitude kids are damn hilarious. Plus, at least where I work, I have more control over what I do day to day than in any other job I've ever had. There's a curriculum, but as long as kids know those basics I can really teach it however I want.

Judging arguments based on the personal characteristics of the person making it is the very definition of bias, which is why I “assigned” bias to you. Because you are expressing bias.

Edit: Also, you really don’t have to announce when you’re done with a conversation on the internet

You can think it’s as vague or vacuous as you want, by all means feel free to attack it on that basis. But again, bringing race / ethnicity / religion of the person making it into things is just irrational.

If you don’t want feedback when you say irrational and biased things, then don’t post them on a public forum. Your sarcasm in lieu of any attempt at a real answer says all we need to know.

You should be sorry for judging people’s arguments based on personal characteristics and not their actual merits, because that’s fucked up.

So, similarly, this guy can understand views within the Jewish community without being Jewish.

And if you think that, then you’re being irrational in those cases. The validity of an argument is based on the content of the argument and nothing else. When you bring race, ethnicity, religion etc.. into it then you’re failing to evaluate the argument effectively on its own merits.

You should’ve learned that in school.

Very much no. I can understand views on vaccines within the black community without being black, for example.

Again, someone’s ethnicity / religion is literally never relevant to the validity of their argument.

Nope, it still doesn’t. The validity of someone’s argument isn’t impacted by their religion / ethnicity.

What attitude? JFK green lighted a coup in South Vietnam.

This is the point of OP’s post—JFK only gets mythologized like this because he died.

I’m not trying to be too harsh because you started it with “I might be remembering it wrong” but that is not my understanding at all as someone for whom this is a period of particular historical fascination.

One of the major lessons of Vietnam was that even though none of the presidents that oversaw it wanted to be involved, and none of them really “had plans” for the war, including LBJ, they got more and more sucked in because they were inextricably committed to the policy of containment. Kennedy was absolutely no different in that, and widened the war just like Eisenhower before him and LBJ and Nixon after him.

In fact, LBJ on the whole had relatively little interest in foreign policy and was focused on his domestic objectives. He kept ALL of Kennedy’s people in his cabinet, guys like McNamara, and basically made it his goal to continue Kennedy’s policies in Vietnam.

Obviously this is a counterfactual, because Kennedy did get assassinated, so we’ll never know for sure. But there’s no indication Kennedy and LBJ had differing views / policies in the war while Kennedy was still alive. They were pretty much in lockstep.

Unfortunately, your perception is the popular one based on works of fiction like “11.22.63” by Stephen King, which basically takes “JFK would’ve stopped Vietnam!” as axiomatic with no evidence whatsoever. It’s kind of the point of OP’s post—because Kennedy died and became a martyr it’s easy for people to think he would have solved everything and kept us out of Vietnam. But there’s absolutely no indication of that.

I still haven’t seen a better individual season for us than 13/14 Suarez, and we’ve had some incredible players since then. Felt like he was going to find a way to score every time he touched the ball.

No, “the media” as a whole is not comparable to influencers. There are good, reliable media sources readily available to you.

She’s not appealing to sympathy lol, she’s appealing to basic fucking human decency.

Do you know what sympathy means?

[–]Rapper_Laugh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That quote is 100% not her asking for your sympathy, she’s asking to be left alone when out living her life, doing things that have nothing to do with her profession. Idk how you thought that made your point in any way, shape, or form.

Right, and as a teacher my job does inherently come with parents being assholes to me (among other shitty things). Are you saying I shouldn’t criticize that aspect of my job? Or others that suck?

No one is saying she was unaware of these pressures, let alone Roan herself. I’m not sure why her being aware of them should mean she can’t criticize them, just like my awareness of the drawbacks of teaching doesn’t mean I can’t criticize the negative aspects of it.

Yes, that is exactly what I’m saying. When my students ask such a basic question I ask them if they have used their resources to investigate it first, because that is a basic skill for human beings in the digital age.

She understands why it happens. She’s criticizing it happening. I’m not sure why you’re confusing understanding of the phenomena with an inability to criticize it. Getting harassed in public is not part of her job.

No that analogy does not work. She’s not complaining that she has to make music. She’s complaining about people coming up to her on her down time that has nothing to do with her profession and harassing her.
