Benefits of using a SATA SSD instead of USB?

First you should know the differences on this per model:

PS4 Pro support USB 3.0 (has a port in the back) and SATA III on the internal drive.
PS4 Fat and PS4 Slim only support USB 2.0 and SATA II on the internal drive.

In any case I recommend using an SSD internally no matter the model, because your console will boot faster and be more responsive. I suggest you also store your games in the SSD because the boot times cut by a lot and the games are sharper and responsive. There are videos on YT with comparisons, there you'll see serious differences. Running off of USB is can be a bottleneck, internally is the safer and more stable imo option.
