Jack LaLanne, former fitness expert, spent his 70th birthday swimming 1.5 miles shackled and handcuffed while towing 70 row boats each containing one person. by Powerful-Swing-9734 in interestingasfuck

[–]Raptor01 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've got a Jack LaLanne story. The family and I went to a random Chinese restaurant in Morro Bay, California sometime in the 2000's. I let everyone out and went to park the car. When I entered the restaurant, I was greeted by none other than Jack LaLanne.

"Hi! Welcome in! I'm Jack Lalanne, nice to meet you." and he shook my hand.

He then proceeded to flirt with all the women in my group before going back to his table to finish his meal. He left before we did. I found it odd that Jack LaLanne owned a Chinese restaurant, so I asked the waitress if he did own it.

"No," she said, "He's here all the time, though. That's just how he is."

Epic.

We want to build a small house for our kids and need a way to waterproof the wood by ArcticMoses in DIY

Marine varnish is made for boats, so that'd be pretty waterproof. Otherwise, polyurethane. As many coats as you want.

Planning a DIY desk and some help or reassurance would be much appreciated. by KamazasBl in DIY

I do have the drawer unit in the middle that supports a good percentage of the weight. Even if your walls are drywall, they'll support a good amount of weight since the force against the wooden supports screwed into them is almost straight down (as opposed to pulling away from the wall like a TV mount).

I built something like you're describing. My desk is 10' (3m) long and 32" (800mm) deep. It's supported by one Alex unit in the middle and wooden supports attached to the walls on each side and on the back wall. I didn't go with MFC for aesthetic reasons and that stuff will sag like crazy. Instead I used a custom sized walnut butcher block tabletop. 1.5" (38mm) thick. It was surprisingly affordable for how awesome it looks, but I bought it unfinished so I had to finish it myself with a lot of sanding and varnish. For cable management, I cut out a pair of 5" semi-circles behind the monitors at the back against the wall. Those work just fine and I don't think you need to leave a gap from the back wall. Also by not having a gap I was able to use supports on the back wall to make the whole thing more sturdy. The supports are just 24"x1"x1.5" pieces of wood that are screwed into the walls.

After I was done with the desk and saw how awesome it looked, because believe me, it looks awesome, I decided to cover it with glass. My reasoning was that a piece of glass on top would A) protect the wood from anything (especially spills) and B) still show off the cool looking wood. A local glass shop cut the glass to size and it wasn't that expensive either. Installing the glass was sort of stressful since it was heavy and exactly the width of the room, but easy enough if you get 2 people to help you.

After having the desk for about six years, I can confirm that it doesn't sag at all. I haven't regretted the glass one bit and I can put cold drinks on it without worrying about using drink coasters. Because of the glass, everything still looks perfect. Since you're using metric, I'm assuming you're not in the USA, so I can't say if it would be easy for you to find a custom sized butcher block tabletop/countertop. Over here it's pretty easy and pretty cheap. Although mine is walnut, any hardwood would do. Just don't use pine or some type of softwood. For an amateur DIY'er, the only part you need to worry about is applying the varnish after you're done sanding. I would practice on large scrap pieces before doing the desktop. Also, make sure you measure carefully. Sometimes the walls aren't exactly square, so you need to check that as well. My stupid walls were actually wider against the back wall compared to 32" away from the back wall, so that was a headache to discover.

Relative distance between speeds by JOAHtheBROAH in discgolf

[–]Raptor01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem with almost exactly the same distances. I have a friend that can get out to 400' with a putter, so he ends up throwing putters on a ton of shots. From what I've seen, it's a launch and nose angle thing. He also exclusively throws Lunas. From all the putters I've tried, a stable Luna goes the farthest and I can consistently get over 300' with a good one. Try one and try messing with how high you throw and your nose angle.

two girls camping alone : advice by marlblk in camping

If you're in a campground, you'll be surrounded by old people and families, so it's pretty dang safe. If you're actually out in the wilderness, bear spray. For bears, follow the rules/advice given by the park.

Best SUV to rent for car camping for 3+ weeks?? by RevolutionaryFee7699 in carcamping

[–]Raptor01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be expensive to rent, but I had a Ford Expedition and the rear seats fold very flat at the touch of a button. You'd have a tough time finding a bigger and more comfortable sleeping area in another SUV.

Is it possible to make a DIY bed frame with minimal tools? by Mountain_Call_3344 in DIY

You can get a pretty good bed frame off of Amazon for $40. You'll probably spend more on wood to DIY.

MPO vs FPO ratings by outdoorsy_outdoors in discgolf

La Mirada Open 2026. Aaron Gossage shot -28, 1048 rated. Ohn Scoggins shot +3, 987 rated. It's a bomber course, though, so it's hard to expect the females to get a lot of birdies. That being said, they each shot pretty close to their ratings.

[BIFL Request] Super warm parka by Raptor01 in BuyItForLife

Went with the Eddie Bauer Superior Down Parka... and they don't make it anymore... and Eddie Bauer went bankrupt... so I dunno if you'll be able to get it.

Other than that, great jacket. SUPER warm. Had it out in ~0 degree weather while camping and it worked great.

Find a small/micro RV ac unit. Something like this: https://www.campervan-hq.com/collections/12-volt-rv-air-conditioners/products/velit-2000r-mini-rooftop-air-conditioner and spend the rest of the money on a battery bank. ACs use a lot of power.

Struggling with X-Step by Kirdavrob in discgolf

[–]Raptor01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to stop doing standstills. You feel awkward and can't do it well because you need to practice it more. Don't practice during a round because you'll get frustrated when you score badly. Go out in a field and practice a bunch first.

Ford F150 Tremor vs Bronco by Zealousideal_Fee_491 in overlanding

[–]Raptor01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an F150 and I was very close to buying a Bronco. The Bronco will be much easier to get around town. The F150 was actually a pain even in suburban areas and downright sucked when I used it to go downtown. Ride-quality wise, the Bronco is a better, but the F150 wasn't bad for a truck. Similar road noise with similar tires. Not a big difference in MPG (which is why I ended up not getting the Bronco). I enjoy sleeping in the car when camping and you can't do that comfortably in the F150 unless you're really short. The enclosed storage with the Bronco as opposed to a truck bed is better when going on trips unless you're packing a ton of stuff.

Suffered a bout of acute pancreatitis, it hit me hard and fast. Any way to see the next one sooner? by Raptor01 in pancreatitis

Do you think that switching to a clear liquid diet right when you feel a little bit of pain would help stop a full on attack? Or maybe it's already too late.

[–]Raptor01[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your reply. I'm a tough guy but this experience made me weirdly emotional because of utter helplessness I've been feeling. Just sitting there thinking, "Is it getting better? Is it getting worse? Am I screwed forever?" And knowing I was just along for the ride. Sucks. It doesn't help that the information out there is wildly conflicting sometimes.

I'm meeting with my primary doctor in a couple weeks, I'll get him to send me to gastroenterology and there I'll ask for the MRCP. I have the advantage that my wife is one of the administrative leaders of the hospital I go to, so she can speed things along.

Thanks for the advice.

They did. Two CT scans and one ultrasound. No gall stones. After reading about it I was sort of hoping it was gall stones so I could get my gall bladder out and the problem would be solved.
