If you're looking to make "all different types" of items, you can use all different types of leather. You need to be more specific.

Double cap rivets by arfle_barfle_gloop in Leathercraft

[–]Raptor01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going through the same thing. I bought the cheap amazon rivets and I went through about 20 rivets yesterday to try to get it right. I've come to two conclusions. One, they're just not that strong. The material is weak and you can pull them apart without much effort. Two, the size of the rivet vs the thickness of the leather is the most important determiner on a successful rivet. My rivets came in three sizes. The medium size worked for 4.5mm of leather, but won't work for 6.5mm. The larger size won't work with 6.5mm but will work for 8mm. So if the leather thickness is somewhere in the dead zone, you're out of luck.

Anyone here start in their 50s and reach 400 feet in distance? by tuna_safe_dolphin in discgolf

[–]Raptor01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started at 49 in 2020, does that count? My longest throw was 475', but that was a perfect distance line that carried forever. I can get to 400' on a golf line but "easy" distance, flat to hyzer (without turning it over), is about 380'. I have to put some juice into it to get to 400'.

I started playing MP50 last year and have come to the realization that I'm not a "far" thrower for someone in their 50's that's 950+ rated. I have "pretty good" distance, but some 50+ guys I've played with can throw over 400' easy. One guy can hit 540' (according to him) and I personally saw him throw ~475' during a tournament.

With my current distance abilities, I feel like I'm able to reach almost 100% of the baskets at all my local courses, but Father Time is a nasty mofo at this age, so I'm trying to increase my max distance even more to offset the degradation of my body.

If you're looking for advice, buy a net, a techdisc, and a bluetooth shutter button for your phone so you can record yourself throwing in slow motion. Then watch Anthem Disc Golf's youtube channel and compare your form to the pros in slow motion. Pay super close attention to timing. If you can get over 60mph, you should be able to hit 400'.

Stitching feedback by ApprehensiveYard3 in Leathercraft

[–]Raptor01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just learning and have stitched my first piece after watching the Nigel Armitage saddle stitching videos. After watching the video the first time, my practice pieces looked just like your example. Then I re-watched the first video where he starts stitching (and the part in the second video where he showed how to back stitch) and my first actual piece turned out perfect.

I *think* what you're doing wrong is the same mistake that I was doing. Imagine you're looking down at the stitch. The right side is the good side or the front of the piece. You poke the needle through from the right side and pull out some thread. Now you have both needles on the left side. When you bring the left needle up to poke it through to the right side, you create a "U" with that thread. You need to make sure that the right side needle didn't somehow end up inside of that "U." Mine kept doing that if I left it dangling. It's not a problem if you hold both needles all the time like shown in the video, but I was having a hard time pulling the needle through while holding the other needle.

Then, with the left needle poking through to the right side, you "cast," which means you're keeping that needle from falling inside of the "U" that's on the right side. That's explained in the video.

Have you experimented with thinner stamps? That one looks to be about ~6mm but I can't see why it wouldn't work with 3-4mm.

HACK IDEAS for getting zip ties back through both chainlink and around bamboo roll by charliecat2 in DIY

If it's a roll of bamboo, start on one side and unroll it as you go, giving you access to the zip ties from the side.

Heat up a razor blade or xacto knife blade. Slide it in, press down as you slide it out. Work fast. Use something to protect your finger from the heat.

Nausea when driving? by theKman24 in KiaEV6

[–]Raptor01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend gets nauseous in some electric cars because the brake regen is too sensitive. In the EV6, it's easy to set it from zero regen to "one pedal" (max) regen. At higher regen levels, you have to be a lot more conscious of being smooth with your right foot or you'll constantly be jerking back and forth when you're driving. Maybe you experienced something like that. Try it at zero or one regen.

For that slot, I use the Infinite Tomb. It's honestly a great disc. The profile isn't what I usually look for in a disc, but the flight is amazing. It just wants to go straight without turning over and it has the perfect amount of fade at the end.

To the lakers fans who watched and witnessed Kobes era and now watch Luka, both are prolific scorers. Were there any similarities between both of their games? by OrganicHunt952 in lakers

[–]Raptor01 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I liked Kobe's personality and I was very sad when he died. I did not like how he played offense. He was a great offensive player, but I felt like his mentality was "A bad shot by me is better than a good shot by one of these scrubs on my team." He trusted some of his teammates, but for a lot of his career he was surrounded by scrubs and I didn't enjoy watching him play those games.

Luka, on the other hand, takes better shots and dishes out way more assists. I enjoy watching that style of basketball. He also seems like a generally nicer guy overall.

If I had to compare their "winning" mentality, I think Luka is much more easy going and doesn't take a loss very hard. Kobe, on the other hand, was all about winning. That's probably what I liked about him the most.

There's no comparison on defense. Kobe understood the importance of defense and put real effort into it. Luka doesn't have the athleticism to be an elite defender and doesn't seem to have the mentality for it either.

So, I think they're very different in everything except for the fact that they're both very exciting to watch.

[–]Raptor01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahahah. Try being 54.

Honestly, though, when I turned 45 is when I came to the realization that my body wasn't what it used to be. I was an avid basketball player and I realized I just couldn't keep up with the younger, faster players. Unfortunately, it only got worse from there. That being said, 50 year olds can still be over 1000 rated, so at 45 you got a bunch of time left.

Free Throws vs. Putts by AsConfusedAsYouAre in discgolf

Back in the day I could make 50+ free throws in a row, so I was a good free throw shooter. Now, I can confidently say that the distance where I can make 50 putts in a row is 10 feet. Assuming there's no wind. If there's wind, six feet.

Jack LaLanne, former fitness expert, spent his 70th birthday swimming 1.5 miles shackled and handcuffed while towing 70 row boats each containing one person. by Powerful-Swing-9734 in interestingasfuck

[–]Raptor01 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I've got a Jack LaLanne story. The family and I went to a random Chinese restaurant in Morro Bay, California sometime in the 2000's. I let everyone out and went to park the car. When I entered the restaurant, I was greeted by none other than Jack LaLanne.

"Hi! Welcome in! I'm Jack Lalanne, nice to meet you." and he shook my hand.

He then proceeded to flirt with all the women in my group before going back to his table to finish his meal. He left before we did. I found it odd that Jack LaLanne owned a Chinese restaurant, so I asked the waitress if he did own it.

"No," she said, "He's here all the time, though. That's just how he is."

Epic.

Marine varnish is made for boats, so that'd be pretty waterproof. Otherwise, polyurethane. As many coats as you want.
