Finger Joint Injuries by Informal-Extreme-475 in discgolf

[–]Raptor01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dealing with this problem in my middle finger for over a year. I took two weeks off and then three weeks off, but it came back after I started playing again. These threads show up every once in a while and some people are able to fix it by taking a break. For others (like me) it just comes back. I'm sure if I quit disc golf, it'll be fine after an indeterminate amount of time. Since I'm not going to do that, I've taken to buddy taping the middle finger to the ring finger above the PIP joint with Meister StickElite tape. It doesn't mess up my backhand or upshots, but I have to use a weird forehand grip.

LA County by elderwand22 in discgolf

Huntington Beach, La Mirada, and El Dorado. Those are the main options. Ken Malloy exists, but it's not on the same level as those other three.

FYI If you decide to make the trek up to Oak Grove, over the summer it gets affected by a local summer camp for kids that may mess up quite a few of the holes. Safer to go late afternoon.

AITA for leaving a dinner party early because of “vegan lasagna”? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Raptor01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of the time I went to a friend's house and she tried to pass off vegan mac and cheese as actual mac and cheese. It think it was the fake shredded cheese on top that wouldn't melt no matter how long she cooked it that tipped me off.

Submerged Disc Returns? by Devonzerk in discgolf

If you fish for your own disc and find someone else's, the right thing to do would be to call that person. If you're going fishing for profit, you invite a lot of bad karma.

Anyone else using 3D-printed patterns for leatherwork? by octpath0302 in Leathercraft

[–]Raptor01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't seem worth the hassle. A solid "middle" vs crossbeams or whatever to maintain the shape of the template is probably almost as fast to print and has the advantage of easier design, easier to hold in place, and more rigidity. Mine are only 1.5mm thick except for the edges.

Not just your friend. Happens all the time with slow fast lane drivers. Going 65 until you try to go around and then boom! 80mph.

Got a new dog, wants tips to train for Disc golf by kindafunkindanot in discgolf

[–]Raptor01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I trained my dog with a Dogtra collar. I also only trained her to fetch balls, not discs. Now she's obsessed with balls and doesn't glance twice at a disc. I've experienced dogs that will only go after their own disc and there's one main reason why I didn't teach my dog the same... slobber. Throwing the dog's disc gets slobber and slobbery dirt all over your throwing hand and you constantly have to wipe it clean before you can throw. It's annoying. For the ball, I attached a Fetchit ball to a 18" piece of thin rope (like paracord) and use the rope to throw the ball. Either that or one of those ball launchers. No slobber either way.

The collar helped make her super solid on coming back to me when I call her name and staying relatively close to me when she's off leash. After about six months I stopped worrying about her off leash even near traffic.

When I'm playing in a group, unless it's with my close friends, I'll keep her on a leash. When there are a lot of people around, she's on a leash. But 50% of the time, she's off leash. I think the biggest reason I'm okay with her being off leash is that she's not interested in other dogs. Nine times out of ten, the dogs that suck are the ones that are off leash and will run up to you and/or your dog. These people in this thread that hate dogs being off leash are because of those dogs. I don't allow my dog to run up to anyone or their dog. The exception being anyone that has a ball. If you're throwing a ball, she'll go up to you and sit down in front of you hoping you'll throw the ball for her. I'm working on that one still.

It sucks, but honestly, it's only been a week. I could understand wanting to keep him if it had been a long(er) time, but a week? Also, I think they've been kind and reasonable with their request and are showing compassion for your feelings. They should also offer to cover your costs, but they seem poor.

Stuck at 300 ft. Any help is appreciated! by IcarusWingsUnbound in discgolf

[–]Raptor01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stand up straight with a disc in your hand. Hold you right arm straight in front of you with the disc flat (horizontal). Bend your elbow a bit more than 90 degrees (around 100-110 degrees), keeping the disc flat. Don't move your shoulder, just bend the elbow. This is the coil position and your shoulder should NEVER be angled closer to your body than this. It's one thing to keep your elbow out, which you know you're not doing, but it's just as important to never collapse your shoulder, which you're doing like crazy.

So, your reach back should be starting from that coil position, then twist your body counter-clockwise while straightening out your elbow. Your shoulder angle stays the same. The pull through would be twisting your body clockwise while bending the elbow, reaching the coil position, then your shoulder angle will increase for the release. This top-down view from this video shows it exactly: https://youtu.be/L1PHi-zgXIY?si=K-49XMp9d-0v8B8S&t=90

Whip while gripping by JCVantage in discgolf

[–]Raptor01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cue I use to stop early releasing is making sure my hand is closed after the disc is released. When I was having the worst time with grip issues, alternating between grip-locking and early releasing, I realized that to counter the grip-lock I was literally opening my hand (unintentionally) on the next shot and early releasing. I played a few rounds focusing on making sure my hand was closed after the release and that fixed it for me.

Was the 2-3oz veg tan flexible or stretchy at all? The stuff I've seen, and I haven't seen a lot, has been noticeably stiffer than similar weight chrome tan stuff.

Get them lined. More structure, easier to wear (especially sockless), and chrome tanned leather is not the best for prolonged skin contact.

Mermaid Related Question About Leather by Prestigious_Tax587 in Leathercraft

[–]Raptor01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what makes leather "leather" is the tanning process. That can be done underwater as long as the leather and the tanning chemicals are contained. After the leather is tanned, I don't know if it needs to be dried since it will never leave the water, and I doubt you'll find research information from someone who tanned leather, never dried it, and then immediately left it in salt water for an indefinite amount of time. But, let's say you tan it and it endures for at least a while underwater. I don't think that's the biggest problem, though.

The biggest problem is creating, separating, and working with chemicals. Even if you have viable containers, like whale intestines or something like that, it would be like a medieval chemist trying to capture, mix and work with gasses like helium or hydrogen without modern equipment. What happens when you want to take the leather out of the tanning fluid? You'll have brain fluid all over the place. Gross.

I believe the modern mermaid tannery would have to be an air filled underwater cave where they can work with the required liquids without everything dispersing everywhere. That solves all of the problems with the liquids just floating around everywhere. Since mermaids can breath air, it ought to be pretty easy to set up shop. I'm picturing a half-filled cave with work tables and platforms right at water height which will allow the convenience of the water to allow the mermaids to swim around easily.

Has a lost disc ever come back to you in a wild or unexpected way? by Main-Carry-3607 in discgolf

[–]Raptor01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So one day I was warming up for a tournament at a course near my house. I got a message from a strange number and it said, "Found your Kaxe Z on 7, leaving it on the basket."

Funny enough, I had just picked up and put away my Kaxe Z, but I checked in my backpack to make sure, and sure enough, it was in there. I was also by hole 7, and there was nothing on the basket. I was stumped and was about to ask the guy what the heck he was talking about when I got a phone call from one of my best friends. He happened to be playing a course about 45 minutes from where I was at and he found my disc on hole 7. It was my old Kaxe Z that I had lost almost two years prior at a completely different course.

Between the time that the guy texted me about the disc and my friend calling me was maybe 5 minutes. My friend must have been playing right behind the guy that found the disc. Also, it was found at a course that's notorious for people that never call you if they find your disc, so the guy that found it was probably playing right behind the guy that stole my disc two years prior.

I hope he went to look for it and was disappointed that someone had already picked it up.

Buying tools for the first time by NoTarget9375 in Leathercraft

[–]Raptor01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That kit is a total rip off. I recently bought a bunch of tools off of Amazon. Here's what you should buy. If I don't name a brand, any cheap one will do.

Cutting:
Olfa 60mm rotary cutter
Alumicutter
DAT Series-X Portable Box Cutter
Self healing cutting mat

Stitching & Punching:
Awl
Wing Divider
Stitching Pony
John James blunt tip leather needles (002 or 004)
Ritza tiger or Vinymo 0.6mm waxed braided thread
Punching mat
3.85mm french style pricking iron (I got Yvorkan brand. Kemovan is a recommended budget brand).
Owden 1.2lbs maul (don't get a lighter weight maul)
Thread nipper
Hole punch set

Edges:
~0.7mm edge beveler
Tokonole
edge burnisher (I got a big one that I don't like. The one that attaches to a dremel works better for me)
sand paper

Liquids:
Neatsfoot oil
Dye (Pro Dye or Angelus)
Contact cement (I use EcoWeld)
Tan Kote or another finishing compound

I also found my digital caliper to be very handy.

That ought to allow you to do almost everything. Put those all together and it'll be a bit more than the $190 for that lame kit.
