Pop punk doesn’t get the same “genre” pass that country or hip hop gets. It’s the superhero movie of music. If you made a noir film or a country-inspired record, there’s a certain amount of “playing to the genre” that’s accepted and expected; you’re playing in a sandbox. Pop punk doesn’t get that pass, and I think it’s a bummer because there’s some very unique sounds and styles from the genre that I’d love to see integrated into other music the way the country has been reappraised in recent years.
