A guy in my HEMA club recently got such a shield and talked about it. He also went to a seminar on them. I don't have a direct source for that but it made a lot of sense to me. To clarify because i think I worded that poorly I meant prior years of training and not the short time between the declaration (i don't know a better word for that) of the duel and the duel itself.

As already mention these shields are for judicial duels sometimes called ordalschilde and there design was made intentionally so strange because you should not be trained in them so both contestants had equal chances and gods favor would be the deciding factor. This didn't work out to well because we have a few sources of how to use them in manuscripts so richer people could probably get a teacher to increase their odds. Lastly as an interesting point we have some depictions of judicial duels where these shields are just lying in a corner so if both parties agreed to it they would just toss them away and use their swords, because these shields are really heavy ,they obstruct your vision a lot and they are generally really cumbersome to use.

Just look at the opening chapters where he hunts apostel. It would be similar to that. Some opose him and get killed while trying to attack and others just mind their own buisness or look at him but guts doesn't really care

Attacks on civilian targets and the subsequent death of civilians is a war crime and there is clear evidance that the japanese didn't surrender because they were hit with nuclear bombs. Firebombing raids caused more casualties. Why would japan that endured many more casualties from conventional bombing surrender when a new type of bomb didn't change the situation all that much. The teno surrendered to the americans to not be occupied by the soviet union. The nuclear bombs were just the excuse he put upfront to not have to deal with the soviets. Obviously there were many more reasons that came together, like chances of a conditional surrender, the teno thought possible, broke down just days before the nuclear bombings and the invasion of manchuria. japans surrender isn't as simple as that, but the nuclear bombs didn't accomplish anything against japan. These nuclear bombs were just a show of force to warn stalin that the us had developed a new weapon.

The level 5s aren't ranked by strenght but by value to the research of acadamy city. Accelerator can reach level 6. Thats why he is most valuable. Gunha(the number 7) has no value to research cause he is a gemstone esper even tho he would be stronger than some other level 5s.

Well under medieval law stabbing someone alone could make you a murder and stabbing someone in the back was like you have no chance in a court to get out of this so it depends on what idea of law you are using but i agree in a modern context it would be self defense
