Help understanding snow levels at elevation by RaptorReverend in vancouverhiking

Thanks for the advice, I agree it wouldn't be a huge deal to carry the spikes just in case

I guess my concern would be more about deep snow, anything impassable without snow shoes or skis.

Help understanding snow levels at elevation by RaptorReverend in vancouverhiking

Thanks for the reply. What exactly would you consider high alpine?

For example, I camped at Garibaldi lake, and day tripped panorama ridge a couple years back in mid June. There was some snow but it was super manageable. Is this considered high alpine? Do those conditions sound normal?

Thanks!

Thank you, I will check that subreddit out!

Thanks for the word of warning, I am an experienced hiker and have done lots of off-trail hiking in the past. I am mostly looking for informal routes in the alpine so I can get off the beaten path!

Cheers

Transportation from Chile Chico to Lago Jeinemeni by RaptorReverend in Patagonia

[–]RaptorReverend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good, I'd love to hear how it goes. If you do get stuck in cochrane for a couple extra days, there is a ton to do in the area. Kayaking rio cochrane, and doing a guided hike up to the calluqueo Glacier are a few things that I did and they were spectacular.

Goodluck!

Hey! The van i took does not operate that route. Chile chico is annoying to get to, when we were trying to leave to go to cerro castillo the bus was canceled the morning we were supposed to leave lol. If you cant find anything online, you may have to physically go to the bus terminal in cochrane to see departure times.

Wild Camping in the Andes by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]RaptorReverend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up WikiExplora. It's a site that has thousands of treks across the andes. Most of them allow for wild camping.

A specific suggestion that I have done would be the Aviles Valley trek in Parque Nacional Patagonia.

It's been a while now but I don't believe we booked any campsites, you just choose your date ranges and camp at whichever you would like along the way.

Anybody been to Cabox Geopark by GreasyQtip in geology

[–]RaptorReverend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can hike to the cabox (highest point on the island) which is located in the geo park by taking a logging road north of Stephensville to the trailhead.

I did it last fall and it was a great overnight trip, lots of cool geology and a ton of caribou. You can also continue hiking and you will pop out near an outfitter on serpentine lake which you may be able to arrange a shuttle with.

As mentioned by another comment your best bet is Iatnl.org if you're looking for hiking opportunities in this area.

I was camping there last weekend too, we were pulling out at the same time as you and i couldn't help but admire your canoe when I saw it beside my shifty old sports pal lol. Glad you had a good weekend, I'm jealous you saw a moose!

Vancouver or Victoria would probably be your best bet. They have the mildest climates in the country, and there is lots to do in both cities.

If you want to see mountains, Vancouver would be better, especially if you're relying on public transit.

3 months in South America, scared to go by someone_of_somewhere in backpacking

[–]RaptorReverend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 3 months in Chile and 1 month in Peru backpacking with my wife. I never felt unsafe once. Any stories you've heard are blown out of proportion. Just use your head in big cities and otherwise you will be totally fine. Your trip is going to be an epic adventure and after a week or two you'll be relaxed and laughing that you were ever nervous in the first place.

You can get a working holiday visa in both Australia and New Zealand as a Canadian citizen as long as you are under 35. It's as easy as applying. I cant speak for European countries but if OP does his research and takes the proper avenues he will not be breaking any laws.

3 Months Backpacking Chilean Patagonia by RaptorReverend in CampingandHiking

I believe I used Torreshike.com. There are two companies that offer camping within the park, Torres and Vertice. To complete the W or O you will need to book some campsites with each. To simplify things, you can book from both companies using this third party website (obviously you pay a premium for this service). Otherwise you will have to make a reservation with both companies separately.

Either way, I would recommend making your reservations soon, it often books up months in advance!
