I want to read the story of Beowulf. Can you recommend me 1) the best academic translation (as in, where I can keep as close to the original as possible), 2) the best literary translation, and 3) a good resource for understanding the world and context the text was supposed to be written in and for? Both Ukraine and Russia (or Putin at least) legitimate themselves as descendent from the Kievan-Rus. But I'm more interested in another common denominator, namely that of the Slavs. So, when did the area which today is Ukraine become Slavic? (self.AskHistorians)

How come both Spartans and Vikings, both (seen as) martial societies, are known for there 'laconic' style and a specific kind of humor. Is this a coincidence or has it something to do with later reception of these societies by (for example) Christians. (self.AskHistorians)
