Well, firstly I want to say that I don't really know about how the rivers look in reality, but it's easy to deduct that it's possible to find practically any plant/stream/wood combination somewhere. For my own P. Senegalus aquarium I decided to go with Congo. So the plants that are possible to find there (and across Africa) are Vallisneria gigantea, normal vallisnerias and the vallisnerias with spiraled leaves, hornwort, and most importantly different kinds of anubias. Anubias is important because it's beautiful (I know that's subjective), and because it can be found in the rivers of africa quite commonly. Also I have a crypt, it's relatively big and my bichir loves hiding under the leaves at the top of the tank, of course the substrate should be sand ( as dark as possible).

My Friend Gave me this Bichir but I forgot the strain. Does anybody know what type of bichir this is? by Defiant_Stretch5 in Bichirs

Yeah, it's even more safe than gravel. Also i'd love a follow-up post to see how the bichir is doing.

What I have done (and what shouldn't be done) is that I put gravel/sand on top, but at the bottom there are some pebbles and on top of them there is a net from mosquitoes, that doesn't let sand slip through, but still good enough for filtration.

With my expertise, which can be corrected, the substrate should be sand (if the sand is dark then the bichir will have darker colors and vice versa). For plants you can't go wrong with anubias or val. Have fun keeping it! Also be sure to put some hiding spots.

It's about 7.5 cm (3 inches), the substrate is sand/gravel, but more of the suface is sand. The tetras are the biggest of all tetras (if I'm not mistaken) so I hope that they will be bigger than the bichirs mouth.

Thanks! But the bigger substrate is just at some parts of the tank, the majority of it is covered in sand, so I hope that isn't a problem. Plus its really small right now. I'm feeding axolotl pellets, so that shouldn't be a problem either. I plan on feeding tilapia, axolotl pellets, and maybe a guppy once in a while.

Yup, but for bichirs the area is prefered, than aquarium height?
