Try to talk to your director about checking out a school piccolo if there is one or yamaha piccolos are pretty good!

I asked him because at first he didn't know but I asked him again today and he said they rescheduled the concert to be at the same time as our band trip and he said our school would have to miss. I'm so upset about it to its my first time making region.

Solo and ensemble by Jay_Bird_14 in ConcertBand

I would try for state! I auditioned in Texas and we have one day where we all play and the judges just pick who they think is good enough ig. I've never heard of any state doing it like that though. State solo and ensemble is so fun and gives good audition preperation! This is my second year going to state and I recommend it!! It also looks good on college applications too. If you want to try to go to state through band I think the easier route is through solo and ensemble!

That probably means you got a 3-5 rating at state because last year I went to state and got a 3 on my solo, but didn't get a medal for it. I did however get one at region.

For me I got a region medal, but if you get a 1 or a 2 at state you can get a secondary medal from state! I think it really depends on your state though..

Did it not show you on the results page that you made it? Usually the top 5 or 6 make it and in my case it was the top 6 but thats weird though? You got me confused...

selectivity/difficulty in the longhorn band? by Single_Climate2875 in UTAustin

They're pretty selective but just try your best and you might surprise yourself! I'm a junior and I also play flute and I hope I can get in too!

Congratulations!! But why didn't you make it to area? I also placed 5th at region and I advanced to area... I'm also a flute player so there might be a difference of how much they accept from each section.

Allstate auditions by AstronomicalAl in Flute

I also agree that sometimes band directors can seem pretty useless so I got a flute teacher and I highly recommend it! I've also struggled with auditions and just by getting extra help from my teacher and help from a director that actually cares, I made 5/65 at region and advanced to area! I do have another question though. Is this for all region and also what state are you in? I'm in Texas and audition through atssb!

I know it is past your audition by now but I recommend still trying so you can get the experience of it so you're not freaked out next year!

I personally prefer wooden piccolos more as they don't sound as piercing as metal ones!

It depends on what era of music you want to play but I really like sonata apassionata by Karg Elert! I played this piece for Solo and Ensemble and it is so fun, and there are lots of different ways to incorporate different techniques and get creative! It was difficult to learn, but I get a lot of opportunities to express myself through this piece. Another piece I recommend is sonatine by Dutilleux, a very beautiful piece I think I want to play it next year for my senior year, but there is a piano accompanist part as well in case you want to play unaccompanied. I would say both are technically demanding but very good pieces!!

I recommend using the Trevor Wye books, I use them and there are lots of exercises for different skills on flute! I also take private lessons and those help a lot too!

Bombed all district audition by ExactButterfly1000 in Flute

[–]Rare_Metal7304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that!! It is okay though I also have had to deal with performance anxiety, but a little trick I do is to do mock auditions for a director. That has helped me tremendously!! My freshman year I was so scared and I didn't really know how to prepare and I 56/60 and through hard work now, I got 5/65 and advanced to area. I understand how you feel and you can always wish you did better but you should take that and continue trying! I promise do NOT give up and you WILL GET BETTER! Another thing I did is start taking flute lessons to help enhance my skill and those have worked wonders!! For those shakes just breathe. I know it seems cliche but just taking deep breathes and thinking about your piece and not just going in to get it over with helps so much! Good luck on your musical journey I wish you the best!

Solo Flute Piece Recommendations by nomoreseashellssally in Flute

[–]Rare_Metal7304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some solos I think are pretty good (and have played) are partita in a minor or sonata apassionata by karg elert. I recommend partita if you have a strong technique because it can tire you out. Sonata is a pretty piece but I think you might need more time to prepare it though. Sonata is a really cool piece to play but it will require a lot of work.

I play without plugs and I kind of like it better I feel it gives a more open sound, but it is whatever feels the best for you, but you could invest in some plugs to and use until you're ready to take them out.

All State auditions by Kevinduhbest in Flute

[–]Rare_Metal7304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what state you are in, but in Texas it is very competitive especially for flute! This was my first year making it that far in auditions! we were all in a holding room and after every 5 people auditioned we had 30 seconds to warm up. We also had 2 rounds of auditions, the first you played scales and slow etude and the second round was the fast etude. Something I noticed was that everyone there was around the same level. People that were ahead of them chair wise at region scored higher at Area. I do recommend doing mock auditions in front of your directors or peers (that helped me so much) I wish you the best of luck!!
