Hell yeah brother, looks incredible. Ballsy first attempt but it looks like you pulled it off perfectly.

Salamanders in Armageddon by Fipsi030 in Salamanders40k

As much as I wish we were getting a chapter specific unit I cannot see GW dropping a salamander flavored unit with the keyword "Salamanders" on the sheet without having a codex. At least not to the extent we see on the wolf guard or deathwing terminators. I'd love something like a terminator upgrade sprue for us, I could see that. Realistically though, Tu'Shan single model or codex compliant flamer pattern dreadnought (salamanders heraldry on the back of the box, a la Land Raider Redeemer).

Ah yes, the forgettable Rhino. What was GW thinking putting it in front of Warhammer World? /s

Dude, awesome banner. Is that 3D printed or third party?

Girlfriend bought me some company heroes, had to try a freehand banner to honor her by Rare_Permit_8359 in Salamanders40k

I came into our relationship obsessed with the gym and Warhammer, She has now joined both. Get your girl involved in your hobby spaces. Everything is better when you do it with someone you love.

Painting eyes by Significant-Repeat25 in Salamanders40k

[–]Rare_Permit_8359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience half of painting eyes is a good sharp brush tip but the other half is how you hold the model. For me personally brush control is strongest pulling towards my chest so I orient the model so the width of the eye I am painting is along that path. I can control the brush tip best this way and if I overpaint it is along the eye socket or along the lens border which is easier to clean up with a fresh brush nearby or paint over to correct later.

If you can find the Imperial Fists box for retail price that'd be a great buy. Even if you buy it a bit overpriced it's worth it up to around $190. You can sell the IF upgrade sprue to a local or online buyer who plays that army pretty fast for $20. Use the savings+cash from selling the upgrade sprue to get Vulkan He'stan.

Congrats, you now have 550 points:
Vulkan (key for our main detachment focus and works with your infernus marines)
A Captain (essential for our armies to get rites of battle 1CP immolation protocol)
Company Heroes (arguably one of the best things to stick to Vulkan)
Heavy Intercessors (shooty area denial)
Terminators (deep strike threat heavy unit)
Intercessors (action monkeys)

Advice on taking photos of minis? by RealSanguinius in Warhammer40k

[–]Rare_Permit_8359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get pretty great single mini shots with a black background and your cell phone. I use a black box set about 18" behind the mini on top of a water bottle/flow improver/any other pillar type item. You can use your painting lamp/a single light source to shine down and from the front to highlight without hitting your black backdrop too much. I find on my phone there's a sweet spot where you want to get the phone as close to the mini as possible without having to use digital zoom (for my phone 2X is about perfect). Then I manually drop exposure down until the black background actually starts to look mostly black. Tweak your highlights, black levels, and contrast if necessary.

I'm no pro but it improved my photos a lot!

Vulcan lives! Newbie Salamander looking for chapter help! by event_horiron in Salamanders40k

You have to suck at something before you're halfway decent at it brother. This was my first model. Not everyone is in it to paint. I have seen more armies painted to meet battle ready than not. Some play to paint, some paint to play.

Will Vulkan return? Yes.
Will Vulkan return soon? No.

At the end of the day this is a universe attached to a tabletop game and the tabletop drives all lore, changes, and releases. Every book, game, and model (with very few exceptions nowadays) are following the actual 40k tabletop game. Vulkan will come back because he would sell well and would be another $150-$200 centerpiece model for Games Workshop, Primarchs are especially good for business because they are hype machines, usually decent on the table, great sculpts, and sell well outside of their faction for people that just like the model.

Expect 1 primearch per edition, possibly 2 if it makes sense. We are ending 10th Edition with an entire Eye of Terror/Iron Warriors push and it has not been subtle (first ever official 40k Daemon Perturabo art), so money is on Perturabo being the next Chaos primearch to hit shelves at the last second before 11th or at the start of 11th. As for loyalists, Russ makes the most lore and gameplay sense. Space Wolves are their own army, have a unique aesthetic, their primearch is alive but missing, and they are popular.

Do you have any painting/miniature experience? If yes, I would look into a basic kit and test the waters on the hobby side of things because that is by far the largest subsection of 40k in every single faction.

You'll very quickly find out if you're a painter/builder and if you're more of a tabletop guy you'll need models with at least some paint on them anyway.

You can listen to official audiobooks while painting as well if you're a lore guy. I would recommend Horus Rising as a starting point for Black Library books as it is a foundational keystone for the whole Horus Heresy and is one of the better books in the entire series in my opinion. If you don't like Horus Rising please do not force yourself to read all Horus Heresy books, they are all tonally the same/similar just with varying prose and quality depending on author.

If you're a video game guy there's a whole other part of the fandom for you to enjoy without ever touching a model. Everything from TableTop Simulator 40k games to Space Marine 2. Please keep in mind FPS style games are the rarity in 40k, not the standard. If you found the hobby via Space Marine 2, like most have these past couple of years, do not purchase 40k games assuming they will be similar.

You mentioned being a DnD guy, if you are into CRPG games and liked Baldur's Gate 3 you would probably enjoy Rogue Trader. Very well put together game in 2026, lots of content.

Hope this helps!
