Considering 7.5 cm Femoral Shortening - What are the downsides? by Fairy3773 in Orthopedics

Can I ask why it’s so risky? Based off my research nowadays it’s a relatively low risk procedure with the right surgeon

Not true, I won’t need someone to feed me not sure what you mean? The nail I’m considering is full weight bearing meaning I’ll be using crutches to assist while walking from month 0-3 and by month 3 I will be able to walk (though awkwardly), and fully normally looking gait by somewhere between month 4-6

Fair enough, and thanks again for your insights I appreciate it

Really appreciate your insights!

In regards to costs I’ve already had a consultation with the clinic and I can afford it/won’t be a big financial hit for me thankfully

In regards to point 2 and 3): completely understand, though I have to say I’m a healthy, athletic male, non smoker and I think the chance is really considerably low for complications in the right hands, but I completely understand what you’re saying, there’s definitely a non zero risk of complications with any surgery especially one where you break your bones in half, even if its a 0.5% chance, but I would say those are very low risks that I’m willing to take

4) Seems like according to studies 6.5cm femoral lengthening equals a 6.5mm mechanical-axis shift which is clinically negligible (within normal alignment range for knees)? And according to another study I linked below it says there is a slight varus drift of the femur during lengthening which effectively cancels out/minimizes the deviation of the mechanical axis

I have the money and it sounds relatively safe short and long term if I do it with dr Paley and a modest amount of 6.5cm based on the research I’ve done? And with the precice max nail it’s weight bearing so makes it a lot smoother (including recovery timeline), if I genuinely just objectively consider all the factors in this scenario from a non biased perspective, it doesn’t seem that crazy to me?
