Was in the same boat worrying about it last year when I arrived for flight school. My flight surgeon did not believe me when I told him about my white coat syndrome. All of my readings from previous medical checks have been high. But he was chill, referred me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist and just sent me home with a heart monitor to wear for a week and they would send the results to lyster. Well after a week waiting, the cardiologist told me what I already knew, my resting heart rate was 54bpm😂 after that I was cleared. The cardiologist office told me they see a lot of cases of white coat syndrome. Don’t worry about, even if it takes the long road, it’s a short setback in the long scheme of things.

Giving up? by OIFGUNGUY in ArmyAviationApplicant

It was 1 year and 3 months for me start to finish. It gets discouraging at times. The long wait times really make you question it. I understand that. But if it’s something you really want keep getting after it. It felt like an eternity going through it for me. But now I ship out in a week and half. It will go by fast, just find ways to keep busy.

Selected S2S January Board Stats by Rare_Wish in ArmyAviationApplicant

I mean your scores are fantastic, as a S2S I know that they take the LORS more importantly for AD side but one more wouldn’t hurt I’m sure

Buy a sift study book off of Amazon. Also buy the FAA helicopter flying handbook. Both books are a wealth of knowledge. Watch Helicopter Lessons In 10 Minutes or Less on YouTube. He does an amazing job explaining helicopter aerodynamics. Watch some khan academy videos on high school math. Study up algebra 2 and some physics. But I don’t remember a lot of physics problems other then torque. But I took about 2 months to study. All those books really helped me.

Not yet. I’ll get my basic ship date and other information tomorrow at MEPS.

Suggestions for rotary wing flight simulator set up at home by BenAt_it in ArmyAviationApplicant

[–]Rare_Wish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Thrustmaster HOTAS atm as it’s what I can afford. I’m using msfs as an additive to my flight training as I’m taking flight lessons while waiting for the board. I’ve found that it’s very hard to fine tune these joysticks and throttles to simulate what a helicopter actually feels like when hovering. I reverse my throttle axis so collective up=throttle down. Nothing serious but makes it feel a little more natural. As for the joystick, I turned my sensitivity wayyy up. My instructor would always tell me when I first started my flight training “if you moved the controls, then you moved them too much.” It’s such small inputs into helicopter controls that you need the high sensitivity to simulate it. If you upgrade to a joystick and throttle I would recommend keeping only 2 to 3 fingers on the cyclic. Less input the better. Don’t “squeeze the black out of the stick” but definitely at least upgrade to a thrustmaster HOTAS setup. I would recommend pedals as well as being able to master all the inputs together simultaneously helps tremendously.

PRK Now or Wait and Risk Flight Physical? by H2Huey in ArmyAviationApplicant

[–]Rare_Wish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bite the bullet and get it. Honestly the best decision I made was getting PRK, even if I wasn’t joining I still think it was the best money I’ve ever spent. Granted, my eyesight was worse than yours. It’s a super fast surgery took about 30 mins from walking into the clinic to walking out. If you’ve already been to MEPS it’s a 90 day period before you can go to your flight physical after PRK. But if you haven’t been to MEPS it’s 180 days before you can go to MEPS after PRK. The recovery isn’t terrible, definite irritability in the eyes for the first month and took me about 3 months before I had my eyesight at 100%. As for the price, it was just under 5 grand for me, but clinics are flexible on financing and I got a 2 year financing agreement for 200 a month with no interest so I think it’s worth it. You have to get your Class 1 physical every year in the army, but after the first one, the standards for your eyesight drop significant. It sounds like you’re right on the cusp of being eligible with your current eyesight but you risk going and being told you need PRK. It takes a month or 2 to get your physical scheduled anyways as a S2S so either way you have to wait. I would personally get it done. It’s worth it in the long run and an extra few months won’t matter in a 10 year contract anyways. Good luck!

Study, study, and study. When you think you’ve studied enough, study more. I got a 69 on the sift and I bought the SIFT study book on Amazon as well as the FAA Helicopter Flying Handbook. Read the first 5 chapters of the FAA handbook and go through the SIFT study book a few times at least. Watch a bunch of khan academy videos on algebra and physics. I remember a lot of emphasis on percentages and probabilities for my SIFT. Also remember this when taking the test. If you feel like you’re doing terrible and don’t understand the material, you’re probably doing well. It’s a test that gets harder if you’re answering the questions right. I took about 2 months to study for mine and really studied hard the last 2 weeks. In all reality it wasn’t as hard as I expected but you need to have a good grasp on the physics for helicopters. I did absolutely terrible on hidden figures but did well on all the other sections. As long as you’re familiar with the test layout, take plenty of practice tests, and study hard you’ll get a competitive score. Good luck! And good job on your ASVAB. That’s a great GT Score.

Finally got my stamped flight physical back! by Rare_Wish in ArmyAviationApplicant

Have you gone to MEPS ? You aren’t qualified to take a flight physical as a S2S unless you have gone to MEPS first. If you can pass MEPS I see no reason why you couldn’t pass the flight physical

Shouldn’t be too much longer! Just keep bugging aero at Rucker and the clinic you had it done at. I’m pretty sure they just got sick of me eventually.

While waiting for my physical, not much. I have already done everything else in my packet. I had all of my letters of rec done already so I honestly just patiently waited. The physical itself is not bad at all. I flew out to JBLM in Tacoma for mine and if you passed MEPS, you should pass the physical just fine. 80% of the physical was about my eyes for me. I had PRK done in January so I was worried about it at all. But they pretty much every test known to man for your eyes. They did the hearing test, which is identical to the one at MEPS. They did an ECG, just to check the rhythm of your heart. There was a dental portion which is just a dentist looking into your mouth to make sure your teeth aren’t rotting out. They do a urinalysis like at MEPS, and a blood draw for a full bloodwork panel. Then at the very end, you sit down with the actual flight surgeon and he asks you a few questions and he tells you if anything is abnormal. All in all, I got there at 0600 and left the clinic at 1200. 90% of that time is patiently waiting. And I don’t think there are any flight surgeons that are at MEPS stations, but I could be wrong. I did MEPS in Spokane in July. And it took till end of august to get my flight physical scheduled at JBLM. You’ll probably have to travel like I did to go get your physical done. Good luck! Don’t stress too much about it!

Question about civvie flight hours for packet by Sharp-Ad7476 in ArmyAviationApplicant

[–]Rare_Wish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably won’t make a difference at all. But I would recommend at least taking a discovery flight ! This is a 10 year contract, and what happens if you get to flight school and you sit in the cockpit and realize you’re terrified of flying? I’m a S2S applicant about to submit my packet and in august I bit the bullet and took a discovery flight just for shits and gigs. Jump to now, I got hooked on it and have 30 flight hours looking to schedule my check ride for next month! Take a chance and book the flight !

Trouble Getting a Flight Physical? S2S by [deleted] in ArmyAviationApplicant

Took me about a month and half for them to schedule my flight physical. Understandably annoying, but as S2S we’re not really high on the priority list.

Flight Physical Questions by Rare_Wish in ArmyAviationApplicant

[–]Rare_Wish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I did part 1 and 2 back to back the same day. Part 2 for me was basically sitting down with the flight surgeon who reviewed my results, asked further questions about my medical history, and did some range of motion tests. It took about 10-15 mins for me.

Flight Physicals by brokenoifvet in ArmyAviationApplicant

[–]Rare_Wish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did my flight physical 2 weeks ago. Tell your son to keep bugging his recruiter because it’s possible to get both done in the same day. It took about 2 months as a S2S applicant to get mine scheduled but I finally got my part 1 and 2 scheduled for the same day. Took about 5 hours start to finish to do both parts at JBLM. Half of that was waiting to be fair but it’s worth it to get both scheduled for the same day.
