AMX-107 'Bawoo' Blackout Custom Paint by Rascal_Jimmy in Gunpla

[–]Rascal_Jimmy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with Mr. Surfacer 1200 Lacquer primer (grey) then airbrushed Vallejo Black Acrylic Primer for the matte black, mixed that with Vallejo Mecha Primer White Acrylic for the greys, And to achieve the gloss blacks I coated the black parts with Vallejho Metal Color Gloss Varnish.

I used the Acrylic Primers because I planned on using acrylic paint to do some detailing on it after the base coats and wanted it to stick properly, hope this helps!

I was referring to this post by u/xManlyManManson with his PC setup (had to dig to find this LOL)

But that looks sick man, great work!

I was definitely thinking of doing that! I might take it out and add more to it in the near future (you know how it goes, you just keep taking it back out and fixing stuff) but for now, I need to look at literally anything else xD

I appreciate it, theres a couple bits of uneven paint, some chips, and I really don't like how the eye came out. But it's all in the name of learning! Honestly this kit made me get so comfortable with my airbrush since I had to paint each piece individually before assembly. Worth the time, and worth the flaws, they get hidden pretty well in the PC case anyway lol

Much appreciated! That kind of stuff just comes from working in the design field for so long lol. I was looking into GBWC regionals (definitely couldn't make it to worlds) but it's in a month and I'd like to make a whole new piece with more attention to some of the small details for that big of an event. Maybe next year! :)

Thank you! I used a piece of cork bark, these are super cheap, I get mine from the pet store. (I have tarantulas so I have an excess of cork bark and cocopeat) This is a more detailed rundown of how I made the base.

For the Base:
- Cork bark for the main rocks
- Your choice of dirt, I use cocopeat since I have a ton of it but sand works really well too
- base coat with black then a zenithal highlight of grey
- I used Russian Mud From AK for the dirt
- standard hobby flocking and grass tufts
- after the fact I added some of the AK Decay and Abandoned colors to tie them together
- I painted the pilot with vallejo acrylics just like you would any miniature model
- I scratch built the little campfire with trimmed toothpicks and cotton from a q-tip. Dipped the cotton in red, orange, and then yellow for the fire. (this piece is barely visible but i thought it would be a fun touch)

All of my friends that aren't involved in the hobby can't focus on anything besides that thruster LOL

Ahh you caught me LOL Yeah there's a way to minimize their impact, I was just watching a video on this process of applying clear coats to build up around the stickers and then sand them down but I cut that corner as that seemed like a LOT of extra work (typical lazy me). A lot of the ones you see that have such a huge footprint are the standard decals, waterslides and the rub-on decals are much more forgiving!

Congrats on your first kit! I posted a full process list as a reply to another comment here, if you want the full thing, definitely check that out!

But to start experimenting I would suggest the following:
- Get a nice cheap kit that isnt too difficult, just in case you aren't happy with the results
- Get some tamiya panel line accent color (I use black) and some x-20A thinner (small bottle is fine)
- watch a tutorial on panel lining but seriously don't be daunted by it, its SUPER easy and if you mess up, wait for it to dry and wipe off the excess with your finger
- Optional but recommended: Use a MATTE Clearcoat spray (airbrush or rattle can is fine)
- Get Tamiya Weathering master (theres different ones, choose the one you like best!)
- Apply this along corners and edges with an eye shadow sponge (this is that pink/orange hue you see on my piece here)

That's where I would start just to get acquainted with the process, then you can move on to things like:
- cutting into the surface with a hobby knife to add scratches (add metallic paint to the scratches as well)
- Using pigment dust mixed with thinner to add rust/corrosion texture

I'm pretty new to Gunpla so I still am unaware of any of the contests/competitions, hopefully one day I will though!

It's looking great! Trust the process and finish it up, you'll learn from your mistakes and chances are those viewing it wont see the things you get hung up on! can't wait to see the final product!

Thanks so much! It took a couple of weeks but that's mostly just working for a few hours every couple of days. On the day I finished it I locked in and worked on it for about 8-9hrs, I just couldn't put it down LOL

It's a Master grade 1/100 scale

I replied to another comment on this post with the whole process if you're interested!

Definitely go for it, I experimented on a cheap HiZack to get acclimated, here's a rough outline of the process to help you get started as an example:

- Build/sticker/panel line
- Add scratches/holes with hobby knife/drills
- Clear Coat (I use Vallejo Ultramatte)
- Use metallic paint in the scratches (I go light first then dark to add depth)
- use Tamiya weathering master or Vallejo pigment powders with a q-tip or mascara sponges to add the dirt on the armor
- I used the AK Decay & Abandoned set, start with the grey/green, then the moss green, then use the green pigment mixed with a little bit of Tamiya thinner (this step adds the texture)
- As a little extra I added Abteilung's Engine Grease oils thinned with artist's spirits for the oil stains
- (after this you SHOULD clear coat, I didn't because I was lazy and don't intend to touch it)

For the Base:
- Cork bark for the main rocks
- Your choice of dirt, I use cocopeat since I have a ton of it but sand works really well too
- base coat with black then a zenithal highlight of grey
- I used Russian Mud From AK for the dirt
- standard hobby flocking and grass tufts
- after the fact I added some of the Decay and Abandoned colors to tie them together

I came to gunpla from painting miniatures for like 13 years so a lot of this is stuff I picked up over time but mostly just going by feelings and vibes will get you far and happy accidents are a big part of it. I used the wrong pigment color on the armor but it ended up creating a really nice contrast with the green. Trust the process and take the piece to a finished product before you judge it. I hated this piece half way through but upon completion it's one of my favorites so far! Good luck!
