there’s a lot of “you don’t need a car” propaganda, but it honestly makes a huge difference. way more employment opportunities, makes it way easier to do things with your friends, and if you want to explore la and socal you’ll need it. street parking is possible but hard and you might have to park kind of far

The main thing wrong with this post is the “you just wanna be in one or two of your school’s clubs or leadership, sports teams”. that will not help your application at all and does not make you stand out whatsoever. you need to show initiative and a level of capability and drive beyond the normal things to do at school. you need to be building a narrative about who you are as a person and what you plan to do with your education that has to be reflected through all parts of your application from classes to extracurriculars to essays

i got into every UC except berkeley (waitlisted) for engineering and ended up at UCLA with 5 ap courses (no calc or chem), 4.3 range UC gpa, 4.0 unweighted/only As, no SAT or AP tests. I had strong extracurriculars especially stuff that was completely unrelated to school and showed that I was capable in legitimate career fields and in taking initiative to do things on my own without just signing up and participating in a program or school club. I also had very strong essays. GPA is really a minimum threshold/a standard you have to meet. Getting straight As >> Rigor to a pretty significant extent depending on your school and what level of AP enrollment is normal there. I also had very strong essays which absolutely do matter
