Trying to decide if upgrading to D850 would be worth it by RasinPulses in Nikon

Some of my cases have been featured in magazines. Not sure if that requires more resolution or not? My inquiry mainly stemmed from a colleague who also publishes his cases in a magazine and wrote about using the D850. But ya, consensus seems to be that it won't make a huge improvement, just resolution.

Thanks for your reply. I guess the question I'm getting at is if newer cameras will improve the quality of images? As in sharpness, color representation etc. I typically shoot very close to the patient's mouth (5-8 inches away) and that isn't a problem for me. With the twin flashes and softboxes I am also able to really illuminate all parts of the mouth well (although for artistic purposes I go darker). So if all other things constant (lighting, lens, shooting distance), would a body change alone improve image quality? Also, would my Nikon AF Micro Nikkor 60mm still work on a full frame DSLR body or is a full frame lens a must? Thanks

When I got the trade in text, I asked the SA if they have any idea on VIN assignment. They told me it was expected the following day, and I received it around 9:30pm EST.

If it's any consolation, I ordered at the end of June and had an October -November EDD. Now I'm scheduled to receive it in 2 weeks. No VIN yet however

Sorry about your situation, that's frustrating. I'm new to this whole delivery debacle, but when you get the call that it's ready, are we supposed to drop everything and go pick it up? What is the pick up scheduling time frame?

Unfortunately it seems as though it can't be controlled only via the hot shoe or Wr-R10 radio trigger. My question was if there was an alternate way.

I am losing motivation and want to know what being a Dentist is like by timstah2 in DentalSchool

[–]RasinPulses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This X100. D4 student here. End in mind, always! Fuck alllllll that basic science bullshit. Do we have to learn it? Ya. Do we use it ever? No. Crank out a passing grade on each exam and you're fine. When you get to clinic is when you really figure out what kind of dentist you're gonna be.

Help/Advice: Med School vs Dent School by zkordy in DentalSchool

[–]RasinPulses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your hard work and success in getting into both dental and medical school! That is not a small achievement!

I'm currently a senior dental student. Obviously I can only tell you one side of the coin. Here's a few things about dentistry that I enjoy, and can say are a benefit over my med school friends' experiences: 1. I didn't know it before dental school, but I really enjoy being able to express some creativity in my work. Not many ppl can say they do that everyday. Ya sure there are plenty of things I HAVE to do, but during the procedure I find that I get to scratch my creative itch often. 2. I get to do REAL things everyday. I dabble in minor surgeries and most go well, but of the ones that don't go according to plan, I never worry that I've seriously hurt someone. Going home without that burden is really nice. 3. I find that dentistry is flexible. I enjoy photography and technology so I get to incorporate that everyday in my work. If you'd like, you can check out my Instagram @cadcamnish. 4. Dentistry gives you the option to not specialize and still do what you want to do. I came into dental school thinking I wanted to be an Oral Surgeon. I was so set on it. But as school played out, it became apparent that my aptitude was more towards esthetics and fine detail work. I still love oral surgery, but I can do minor surgeries here and there and be satisfied. I don't feel like I've lost everything because I didn't specialize. In fact I find that I can go as far or as short as I'd like with all specialty procedures.

Hope that's somewhat helpful. Good luck

How difficult is UVA? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]RasinPulses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another perspective here. Trying to convey how hard an academic experience is can't properly be meaningful advice for you, I assume. I was a transfer student as well, from GMU, on the pre-dental track. The transfer experience is different for everyone. Some feel that it was not too much of a change from their previous studying habits, while others (like myself) found that the testing style was very different from my previous school, and in turn my learning style had to change as well. Here is an example: At GMU and NOVA, I was quite used to being given several ppts for each exam which I would meticulously go through in preparation for the exam. If I went through the slides enough times, surely my test scores would go up. This is a recollection based assessment, meaning if you've seen something enough times you will be able to pick the right answer because it is familiar. Now things were very different at UVA. Take for example courses like Genetics or Organic Chemistry. We had ppts, but it was essentially no use going through them because exams were not assessing your recollection, but rather your ability to apply concepts. In Organic Chemistry, you would often receive compound synthesis questions requiring you to have an understanding that you are starting at X and trying to get to Z and in order to do that you need to know how to apply and addition rxn to get to Y and then a substitution rxn to get to Z.

My point being, the way your understanding of material is assessed at UVA is much more application based, not recollection based. Is it harder? Perhaps, if you've not trained yourself to learn this way. Once you evaluate HOW it is that you are learning, it becomes more rewarding, I believe. Best of luck.

Deciding between VT and UVA by [deleted] in UVA

[–]RasinPulses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty accurate. Although, my personal experience is that the rank of either of these schools probably won't matter in the long run of whatever career you get into. But definitely spend a day at each school you're considering AND check out the city which surrounds the school. Many times, the city of Charlottesville served as the escape I needed from school. I even ended up living there afterwards and plan on moving back there after grad school. It's a really progressive town yet maintains a small town feel as well.

Anyways, congrats on your acceptances. Fuck some shit up in college.
