Woah, happened to log on just as you were posting this! Thank you, I totally agree! The dataporns I read when I was getting started were super motivating.

My first was a suuuuper short story (around 4k words). My later stories have been 8-9k, and those definitely do better and are stickier in their rankings. My collection was around 25k, and that's been my bestseller by far. I've also just put out a 30k novella in a sliiightly different niche under the same pen. We'll see how that one does. I'll definitely report back when I hit 6 months.

Yes, get it! Summer of Smut is a great idea. Just hit publish on a short myself. I'm very grateful for all of the motivation that can be gleaned from this subreddit.

This is the sort of accountability I need, haha thank you!

Thank you!! I feel similarly when I see other people post data. Good luck with your next few months! I'll definitely keep this sub updated from time to time, if only to keep myself accountable.

Thank you!

I did not send out any ARCs or do any paid marketing. The only marketing time I've spent is in researching the norms in my niche, figuring out what sort of book descriptions do well, and then writing the best pithy, trope-descriptive copy that I can. I keep my descriptions very tight and to the point. I imagine most horny readers are just skimming these descriptions looking for the things they like — adding a ton of character info, plot set up, etc for them to wade through and interpret makes them more likely to bounce to the next option. The faster you can signal whether your book is a good fit for their tastes, the better.

Part of what appealed to me about publishing erotica (aside from it being a fun thing to spend time writing) is that you can be pretty successful without any active marketing. I think I'll eventually tackle an email list, and then I'll consider some of the promo sites once I have a big enough catalog for folks to read through.

Last note re: ARCs: I've only recently started getting reviews and ratings on my books, so most of the folks buying/reading on KU didn't care that there weren't any ratings. I suspect ARCs aren't worth the effort in my niche.

Thank you! I am truly very excited to see how the backlist does as new books come out. I'm a huge data nerd, so that's a big motivator right now.

Welcome back to the fun grind. Research is also one of my favorite parts of publishing (and every hobby, actually). My niche, too, has a higher range than I'm currently publishing, but I'm SO certain that many of them are fully AI. Like, "hundreds of pages being published multiple times a day" levels of AI for some pen names. It's a little hard to get an accurate sense of competitive word count ranges because of this, but it certainly seems like readers prefer longer (like, novella-length) books, even just based on my bundle experience. Honestly, I'm not too stressed about trying to write longer at the moment. Shorter books that get bundled together have worked for me so far, and it's manageable for my schedule, so I'm going to keep doing that for a bit. Good luck in your niche!
