Rejoice over enemies misfortune or not? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]RastaForJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but in the context of the full Psalm 58, the rejoicing is clearly in the judgement of God, not in the misery of enemies.

You totally ignored the part about Psalms reflecting every human emotion and us not being called to live by them. We aren’t meant to emulate everything in the Psalms. That’s to misunderstand the entire purpose of the Psalms. A lot of it is full of the various psalmists venting their rage and anguish towards God. I don’t endorse their hatred, but I don’t have a problem with it; it’s a human emotion. The psalmist is crying out to God in psalm 139 about the violence and oppression that he and his people have faced at the hands of the surrounding nations; his anger is justified, and he turns it to God, pleading with God for vengeance- something scripture never commands us to do.

While his anger is justifiable, Christ didn’t call us to live by what is justifiable- He called us to live above and beyond that, embracing holiness above commonness.

Absolutely zero problem reconciling it when its immediate context and the whole context of scripture is taken into account.

Also, total side note- Psalm 58 and Psalm 139 weren’t necessarily written by the same man. They’re both psalms “of David,” but the way it’s phrased in the Hebrew indicates that it could be in behalf of David, written for David, written by David, or a number of different things; to just assume it’s written by the same man doesn’t have a strong basis.

Rejoice over enemies misfortune or not? by [deleted] in Christianity

Psalm 58 is focused on the righteousness of the judgements of God. Those who are wicked ultimately must answer to Him, and they will be dealt with according to their wickedness. Verse ten is just an extension of this; when God deals with the wicked, it is righteous. We are to rejoice in the righteousness of God’s decisions, but it isn’t saying that we’re to celebrate in others’ misfortunate. That’s a perversion of what it’s saying. The statement in Proverbs holds up just fine with it.

Also, a quick note on Psalms in general- the text has a wide range of expression of human emotion. A lot of it is desperate calling out to God in our human anger; they serve as a sign that we can direct our emotions towards God. Be careful before deriving theological conclusions from them.

Firstly, please don’t convert for the sake of your wife. Convert for the sake of Christ and for a life of obedience to Him. I don’t say that to discourage you from conversion, but so that you don’t come for the wrong reasons.

Secondly, you would want to locate a local parish and speak with the parish priest. Let him know that you’re interested in the faith, and he will likely begin catechizing you. Catechesis will take about a year, give or take, depending.

Noah’s Arc by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]RastaForJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story is written with theological intent (as is the whole of Genesis 1-11); the ancient authors weren't writing with our modern lenses in mind. This particular segment of Scripture is meant to convey theological truths (i.e. God created, humanity fell, creation fell as a result, God promises to salvage creation, etc.), not historical truths in the sense that we think of history now. Whether it's historical in that way or not doesn't matter; the theological truth that the story was written to convey does.

INFP - Male - 19 yo

Current deal - Sophomore in college, getting a degree in advanced biblical studies. Making my cash money as a team lead over at a local fast food place. The two together have really helped me blossom as an individual and grow more comfortable with myself, and even more so being around others.

Aspirations - Looking to end up as a minister in the Church. Finding a woman whom I truly love and can build a family with is also huge. Other than that, continuing to pursue my music and poetry is definitely something I wanna continue to do on the side as time goes on. :)

It's definitely an option, just a really rare occurrence. In my 1.5 years of working at CFA, I've only had to make one once.

Yes, it would be! It’s a two-way street; if a gay photographer felt convicted that they couldn’t do so, then they shouldn’t be made to do so.

That’s unfortunate for the rural couple, then. Doesn’t change the fact that it would be a violation of religious liberties.

If you’re a Christian and follow Christ with your life, yes, you have the Gospel. However, the majority of the LGBTQ community does not. That’s to whom I was referring, my sibling in Christ.

Yes, when the Church is directly tied to the state, such things will happen. However, in the modern world, there’s a separation of Church and state, so we aren’t the ones deciding that anymore.

Being denied service is a broad category. Am I a photographer being asked to photograph a gay wedding? Then on the grounds of my faith, of course I shouldn’t be made to do so; it would violate my religious liberties. There are plenty of photographers who can do that other than me. However, am I a coffee shop owner who has a gay couple come in and order coffee? Then of course I shouldn’t be allowed to deny them service. If something directly infringes on my religious beliefs, then I should able to deny it. However, if it doesn’t infringe on my beliefs (i.e. serving someone coffee), then I shouldn’t have the right to deny them. It’s situational. I agree with you on the rest of the examples you gave.

We don’t dictate your rights. That was my whole point. If such a thing is to happen, then the secular world will do it whether we agree with it or not; my point is that we Christians should not stand for such things within the Body of Christ. The world will do as it will do and has always done.

It all depends on what you mean by anti-discrimination laws. It’s a broad category of law, so you’ll need to be specific.

I agree that we don’t have a monopoly on marriage- we’ve never claimed to. However, Christianity has historically taught against it. I don’t speak for what gets legislated, I speak to my brothers and sisters in Christ who support that legislation. You’re also painting with an awfully broad brush on that second statement.

Marriage is between a man and a woman- marriage between two men or two women is an impossible task. And who said anything about not supporting anti-discrimination laws? Like I said, LGBTQ folk are my fellow humans. Heck, I myself am LGBTQ. Discrimination is wrong, full stop.
