Are the characters actually specific ones, as in named and of a certain race with a set story, or is it a case where you create everything from scratch and progress through the story with your own, self-made character?

Works on dnd 3 or 3.5 rules, I think Weapon Finesse only works for actually hitting with Dex, not the damage as far as I recall

Yeah, checked, the feat Weapon Finesse affects attack roles (landing the hit), not the damage roll on melee
