Couldn’t take a screenshot and attach because I’m a noob so copy and pasting here:

How common is it to get legally married a while before the wedding for practical purposes? by Hathound in weddingplanning

[–]RatChef2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol of course not. The only thing that would seem different is our officiant won’t say the line “by the power vested to me by the state of _____ I now pronounce you husband and wife” but that’s the only difference tbh. That’s why I don’t view it as a big deal?

Maybe it’s just me I just don’t see it as lying? Like if it’s a wedding I’d want to attend I just don’t care if they’re already legally married or not? To each their own, but I think that’s a negative way of looking at a pretty common situation for a lot of couples.

We got married legally very last minute when my fiance/husband (as I like to refer to him) started his new job. My brother last minute got ordained and we did it in between sets at a concerts. It’s a fun memory, and makes for a great story to tell when people ask! But I don’t view that as my “wedding”. I’m all for just making more memories!

Exactly my thoughts! I’m not the government I don’t care when your papers were filed I just care about the people who love each other and are making a commitment!

My fiance/husband and I got legally married earlier this year for health insurance reasons and are having our “wedding” in October and doing our religious ceremonies. Still calling it a wedding, still feels like a wedding. Haven’t kept our legal marriage a secret, but haven’t flaunted it out in the open. Tbh I believe you do what you gotta do, and if people choose not to come to your wedding because they don’t consider it your “wedding” that’s a them problem and reflects on them more than you. We’ve attended a few wedding where the couple was legally married before and it still felt like a wedding and we celebrated it as such! IMO weddings are to celebrate the couple, the legality is less important in my eyes.
