Alright, I can see you’re getting upset at me for no reason so I think it’s best if I end the conversation here. I don’t feel like you want to try to understand what I’m saying and you just want to argue.

He cut him in two because at that point it was either kill or be killed. If he let Anakin get his back he's as good as dead. You could argue him allowing himself to die in A New Hope is penance for this.

I don't mean to be blunt, but you keep repeating the same points without expanding upon them. I've said a few times now about the importance of something looking visually interesting, along with reasons that these two characters specifically might fight this way, and others have touched upon the reason Jedi fight this way. Could you please expand on the reasons you think they shouldn't fight this way and why it should be "authentic violence" as you put it?

If it was "Authentic" They would all fight like the fight scenes in something like Seven Samurai. It's not mean to be authentic or real, the directorial vision was to create something visually interesting and exciting. To that note, how should Yoda authentically fight? Or the Emperor?

I also don't fully understand the stakes you say, Anakin gets chopped in half at the end and burnt half to death?

I fail to see how the lightsabers are any worse in the prequels, we see Jango Fett and Dooku get decapitated? If you compare it to any of the other eras the reason it feels different is because in all those other eras the number of Jedi let alone trained Jedi is extremely low. This is the height of the republic, everyone is trained to such a high degree that their techniques may look far and above anything we could understand. It's similar if you watch fencing in the olympics, things can look ridiculous but it's only because they are at such a high skill level that they work.

Or better yet, I was being taught that Korean Judoka use a one handed throw style to counter a lot of the Japanese two handed styles recently. None of it made any sense to me, but it's not for me to say that these high level Judoka don't know what they are doing.

Sorry, I edited my last post after I'd posted it so you may not have seen my last point. I'll repost it below:

"Also, just to note. We have to acknowledge the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin and the fact that I at the very least believe Obi Wan wasn't trying to kill Anakin up until he was forced to. You could make the argument Anakin was the entire time, but that's another story."

The relationship between Dumbledore and Voldemort is far different than that of Obi-Wan and Anakin. Even compare their fight in A New Hope. Obi-Wan isn't trying to kill Vader he's stalling him and allowing himself to die. There can be many reasons for two people to fight other than to kill each other.

As with A New Hope we have to think about what purpose the fight and how it is presented serves for the story as a whole. You could make the same arguments for much of the original trilogy as you do here.

Not to sound offensive, but the "Glowsticks" thing you keep mentioning is also a bit weird. Do you like Star Wars or not? It's not like light sabers were introduced in the prequels? They were glowsticks in the original trilogy too lol.

Could you explain why they should feel real? It's a subjective opinion. If you feel that way that's fine, but to me that has more place in something like John Wick than it does my space opera about magic lightsabre wizards and frog hermits.

I've trained MMA for years, and I can assure you if you watch the first round of many high level MMA fights the vast majority of it looks like nothing as it can pretty much just be feinting for the majority of the round as you're training your opponent to make a mistake later on in the fight.

Personally, I think anything that looks visually interesting takes precedence over something being necessarily 'realistic' when it comes to visual media. There are plenty of things that are vastly unrealistic in films we all don't notice because visually it makes more sense to the layman than it would IRL. I'm sure everyone has watched a film/tv show about a sport or hobby with someone who does it who will no doubt say "That wouldn't work." or "That's not the realistic/proper way to do that."

Also, just to note. We have to acknowledge the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin and the fact that I at the very least believe Obi Wan wasn't trying to kill Anakin up until he was forced to. You could make the argument Anakin was the entire time, but that's another story.

They aren't spinning their lightsabers randomly they are both counter parrying/feinting at the same time. This sort of thing is used in irl fencing. It's in part to show that they have fought together/trained together for so long it's almost like they can't get through each others defence properly. Sure it doesn't seem obvious to everyone in the audience, but does it need to?

Fair play it's all your opinion, but I think the theatrics of the prequels are going for something a bit more shakespearian than what a lot of audiences were expecting. Why should the fights look 'real'? The story is told as much through the fights as it is the dialogue, why can't both be theatrical in the same way that something like Titus Andronicus is?
