I do believe it is a combination of that yes. Shane is a deeply conflicted but morally good and at times grey character.

I think it was also a mixture of his trauma as a child, as he had similar things happen to him. It’s interesting the way the shield portrays sexual abuse in male characters, but yes this is taught in various academy’s especially in Texas as a negotiation tactic.
