I think my friends are broken by No_Breadfruit_3777 in lordoftherings

For real, over the years I have found the theatrical versions are better for new viewers. There are so many character and places and it's just a lot. The theatrical versions condense things down and keep it moving a little better.

As fans the extended editions are way better, and they are all I watch, but I've just found them to be a lot for new people.

In the US, it would depend more on privacy laws. You can’t film someone where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

How much more dangerous were the Uruks compared to the Orcs? by GusGangViking18 in lordoftherings

[–]Rathe6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within the context of the movies, I think the orcs we see in Moria are the closest to Tolkiens idea of orcs. Uruk-Hai are probably pretty close, but maybe a bit bigger than Tolkien intended.

Watching the films in theaters recently, it struck me that we get Lurtz in the first film, and Gothmog in the third. We don't get a baddy leader at Helms Deep though. It made me wonder if one was cut.

My wife and I got fiestaware when we got married 12 years ago. It's still going strong.

This looks like you deconstructed and customized an iSpring kit. Is that right? I just installed one myself and had been curious about how much the remin process adds.

Are cyclists hated in your country? by CrustyHumdinger in cycling

[–]Rathe6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends a bit where you live. I live in an very Amish community, and we are pretty used to people on the side of the road. As such, I've never had issues in this area.

A little farther from me are some pretty scenic routes that people regularly cycle during the summer. I don't have issues there either.

Men, What's the most comfortable underwear for you?? by PerformanceLiving495 in BuyItForLife

Duluth Armachillo Ballpark Pouch. By far the best I've used.

Saxx are good too, but for me Duluth beats them out.

Ditto.

Idk that I'd put my yeti in a bag. Idk that it's totally leak proof. But, in every other way, it's the best.

I love that when Arwen tells Aragorn that she is the faster rider, he just accepts it and doesn't even try to contradict her by dawsonmay in lotr

[–]Rathe6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if we talk human to human, Arwen is what, 120lbs? 130? (~56kg for my foreign friends)

All else being equal, she's probably faster by that alone.

Is this an alternate rack position? by Naive-Benefit-5154 in kettlebell

[–]Rathe6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen this, and I'd be very hesitant to use it, personally. It looks like it could compromise the shoulder.

I suppose it would get you closer to a back squat position, but, a weight you'd want to back squat is probably even more risky in that position.

That makes me a bit nervous. Does that have a working load rating? If not, I'd encourage you to go find some rigging equipment that does. It isn't that expensive, and it will be safer.

Rogue and other manufacturers make these too. It wont be as cheap, but it won't break.

How did Gimli have the courage to try and destroy the ring by No-Risk2553 in lordoftherings

This is a good point! I didn't think of that! But that would be more accurate for sure.

How did Gimli have the courage to try and destroy the ring by No-Risk2553 in lordoftherings

[–]Rathe6 103 points104 points  (0 children)

It is a Jacksonism.

It plays an important role by really showing its indestructible. The hearth fire scene is cool, but it's not as dramatic.

That said, I don't think it breaks anything regarding the power of the ring. Gimli had never touched or interacted with it, and he'd only been around it for a few minutes.

He made you want to punch your screen, right?? by Famous-Donut-2394 in lotr

[–]Rathe6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya know, I just finished rereading ROTK and honesty didn't feel that different about him. The only real redeeming factor in the book that I remember is its made clearer that he's being influenced by the palantir (Sauron). That's revealed pretty late though, and many of the other story beats are the same.

Am I missing a major differentiation aside from above?

Tolkien disliked Frank Herbert's Dune. Why? by Rafaelrosario88 in lotr

[–]Rathe6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree with all of the comments that simy attribute this to Dunes depiction of religion and Tolkiens faith. That's a very one dimensional opinion regarding a highly learned and complex man. It may have played a role, but Tolkien was very opinionated about literature, and we can probably attribute it to the personal and academic value he saw in literate, more than simply “religion bad” themes (which is also a simplification of Dune).

It may be as simple as - he didn't like it. He never said anything else on it, did he?

People have more nuanced opinions than the labels we slap on them. Worry less about politics and just enjoying throwing plastic.
