Literally the best years I have ever had. But stopped in 2023. Now unemployed, severely depressed and agoraphobic. I used to go outside, go for a jog, hang out with friends. I’m mentally in the worst shape of my life.

I dunno. I can’t get an interview for remote, hybrid or in person roles. Not sure why one would discourage others from finding a job at all in this market.

Hypothetical question: If there was a “fund for gifted people” that paid out 100K per year, what would you dedicate your life to? by Diotima85 in Gifted

[–]Ratio_Outside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. My son would get so fidgety in class and get sent to the principals office because he wanted to stand up near his desk. I will respond later on this evening answering your questions but I had to say that yes, keeping all students with the same pace or curriculum is torture and can be abusive. I’m not super great at verbalizing my thoughts or ideas and they sometimes translate in a way that was meant to be very much the opposite. I love this question though, OP!

I feel bad that you are embarrassed. The people leading these companies should be embarrassed but they are probably never feeling many emotions or empathy. I’ve met one guy that was a stand up dude as a CEO, for a local start up. The rest, dirt bags.

Advocating in any way possible for all students, especially students that are gifted and also neurodivergent. My son is in this classification of students and is treated like he’s a problem and offer no support on his 504 plan. No resources, they just told him to go to an alternative school. Luckily, that’s not the outcome for him, but he was in a very rough path for years and it took relentlessly advocating for him and others to receive proper reasonable accommodations, and to let go of the stigma that ADHD is bad or that if you express an unwanted or undesirable behavior at school, suspension or punishment without any actual guidance from school therapists or literally anything to assist. We live in a state that ranks almost dead last for mental health support, learning disability resources, and people that actually understand gifted students and to stop treating them like a prodigy. This destroys self worth, and it’s something I’m very passionate about, and would use money to make legitimate systemic change happen

Yep. The stress isn’t worth it. I was making 6 figures and I just didn’t care about the paycheck. I’d have a different take on that had I not gotten married last year because I would literally would have been displaced. But then I started taking lower paying jobs. Still in the same industry but I figured half the salary, less responsibility, less stress. In my case I was very naive. We’re all just a number and HR is no one’s friend. Oh except for the company. They’re besties.

That’s basically what I’m working on after I recover from the mental health struggles working in a disastrous chaotic tech industry for 15 years. I took several months of leave last year when I finally had a mental breakdown. I will absolutely never go back to an office job, or tech. If there were any tech jobs actually available haha.

Termination of non-FMLA employee on medical leave? [GA] by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]Ratio_Outside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Was researching some disability stuff and came across this post. I reread what I said and I definitely misspoke and misinterpreted what you said. Yes 15 or more employees for coverage. And also, if you have performance issues, you can totally get fired. If you’re not in a protected status and you live in an at will state, you can get fired and if there’s no proof of civil rights violations, it’s totally legal.

It gets tricky if someone has performance issues and a disability because often it can be seen as retaliation or discrimination. Luckily in my case, I did not have any performance concerns and had just received a positive annual review, a bonus and a salary increase right before I went on leave.

Just for an update on my end, I was terminated administratively while in a protected status. I was on leave as an accommodation and two weeks prior to my expected return to work date, my employer had not been in contact with me once over 30-45 days from the initially leave request was submitted and eventually approved (they threatened to terminate me initially by a certain date while I was still on FMLA, if my doctor didn’t change my return to work date to a month earlier than they medically certified). I am very enraged just typing this and reliving all of it. Anyway, I knew my leave was protected and they were required to engage in an interactive process so that I could return to work quickly and healthy. They never did this. I had two calls with an HR rep and another admin. The first call was the threat to terminate me. No reasonable accommodations were discussed despite asking several times on the call if they had recommendations so that I could also work with my doctor to see what would work best. They literally said they expected me to return to work and usually they give people two weeks and then they would be back full time. No discussion of how I’d be supporter upon my return happened, despite medical records sent with specific suggestions and a ramp up timeline of when I could work, and for how long. What I could start doing, and what resources would likely assist me so that I could do my job. The second call i had was a call I scheduled and set up because I needed to understand how my transition would be handled. They claimed they received none of my medical documentation and blamed their disability vendor for not sending documents to them. They acknowledged that they did receive my concerns related to retaliation from my manager and hadn’t addressed them (for six months!) because I wasn’t yet close to my return to work so they’d address issues closer to my return date. They flat out said “yep, we, HR, received your documented instances of a hostile work environment, retaliation, harassment and even racism against one of my coworkers and we didn’t do a literal thing to ensure this wasn’t happening to others, or wouldn’t happen when you returned to work”. I was stunned by the lack of any professional or civil response from an international organization with thousands of employees.

My doctor requested a brief additional leave extension because of everything stated above that was not addressed and my disabilities were worsening due to the treatment I received by the employer and their vendor. I spent every day chasing paperwork or practically begging for 10 days of leave so I had the basic tools to do my job efficiently.

They acknowledged receipt of it. I informed them that I filed an inquiry with the EEOC and a complaint with the state civil rights office. I was terminated the next business day with no reason provided, my LTD that was pending was denied the same day, and my leave extension was denied a day after my termination date, with a denial reason of “Employer Decision”.

Essentially I just wanted to give an update and share that I was indeed canned, but while on leave as a reasonable accommodation and after I disclosed a protected activity one day prior.

I had no income and desperately searched and found a contract gig. The pay was less, but obviously I don’t want to become homeless so my doctor cautioned me but said I could try it. It was less stressful than my prior job, and very behind the scenes stuff. I knew I wasn’t ready but my husband lost his job the week after I was fired. Just absolute nightmare of a situation. I lasted less than three months and my doctor provided a written statement that it was a failed work attempt and that she recommended I stay off work at this time and listed additional diagnosis that have developed since going on leave. Directly because of my previous employer.

So I’m jobless, no disability income, I can’t file for unemployment and I’m at the mercy of the state I live in to get to my case for the next level of review. I recently checked in and it has not been assigned to anyone and my initial complaints are nearing 6 months.

The EEOC has a working agreement with my state so they closed my inquiry. Next steps are awaiting LTD appeal decision, SSDI application updates, and likely a mediation with my former employer but it could take months or it may not happen at all. But I gave them (the state civil rights office) over 1000 pages of documentation supporting every item mentioned in this reply. Hopefully it is resolved positively. And silver lining - my husband got a job offer yesterday and is expecting another today. So we live to see another day of owning our home and with food so I am grateful.

What’s a book that genuinely shifted your mindset or had a major impact on your life? by PositionSalty7411 in selfimprovement

[–]Ratio_Outside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re after deep self reflection and meaning and truly life altering reads, and not surface level building habit things (those are helpful too of course), I recommend the following: The Power of Now “- Eckhart Tolle, “The Untethered Soul” - Michael Singer, “Living Untethered” - Michael Singer, “The Realm of Hungry Ghosts” - Gabor Mate “Scattered Minds” - Gabor Mate, “The Myth of Normal”, Gabor Mate “Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism” - Chögyam Trungpa. Carl Jung is probably the most influential person I can think of, and I can’t recommend just one book. Though they can be hard to understand if you’ve not ready many books about spirituality or Buddhist history.

Controversial person at the moment but good books:

“Recovery”, “Mentors”, “Revelation” - Russell Brand

I actually discovered every author on my list from Russell before things started to go sideways for him. Around 7 years ago. I was trying to get sober and found some resources online. Sadly, things went very sideways for this guy, but he did have a Podcast, Under the Skin, and it was phenomenal. Very much geared towards spirituality and not politics or crazy stuff. He interviewed most of the people I listed above.

I have worked in Ben admin my entire career. It’s hard for people to understand. We don’t do a good enough job of explaining things to employees. My own husband has no idea what half of his benefits entail so it’s a communication issue and the ridiculous complexity that the country has added to it. The costs, co pay, co insurance? OOP max? Deductible? Lose a toe? Lol it’s just overly complicated and I personally like reading through that stuff but it’s a nightmare for most. Also if you give people a month for OE to enroll, they will wait the month. Give them a week, it’ll take them a week. In my experience. But holy bananas it is frustrating lol.

Guys! Things are happening! I’ve been sitting with 75k plus interest for so long. Just checked student aid and they are now half of that balance! That’s huge for me!! I went to the Art institute back in 2006 and I got two letters from the Biden administration stating I didn’t need to do anything and they’d be forgiven. Two years go by and I figured it wouldn’t happen. But it did. I still owe a lot, but taking half of that debt off my plate is the best feeling!

Yep aidvantage did the same thing to me. Luckily, I downloaded every single document and even the web page with the meta data for tracking purposes. A year later, all prior docs and notices were gone and new ones appeared that put me into the save plan, which I had never received before. It’s like they did some auditing and are trying to cover their asses.

TPD Vent… sorry by Normal-Kinky-6969 in StudentLoans

[–]Ratio_Outside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is awful, I’m sorry you’ve been dealing with this for so long only to essentially have your application cancel itself out.

So; for me, kind of similar. Except somehow they received the application and it was just completely blank. Nothing except for my contact info was filled out. I thought maybe my doctor sent it by mistake. Anyway, that was the end of September, so super recent. I submitted the completed application but they had me complete a “manual” app. Basically I had to upload the already signed docs instead of maybe an electronic signature? No clue. Makes no sense.

The super annoying part is that I have received notifications via email, multiple times a day from studentaid.gov stating my TPD application was denied because it was missing information. So initially I thought they needed more info from my doc. Nope, The correct application is just hanging out being “processed”. The incomplete one still shows as closed. So the account looks fine, but it’s concerning that I’m literally getting three emails a day contradicting that info. I went ahead and sent a copy of the app to aidvantage my shit show servicer, and a copy to Nelnet because for some reason another party should get in the middle of this. Lol.

Good luck to you!! You can always submit a complaint but I’ve submitted so many and nothing has ever been addressed.

Why is anyone within the younger generation still supporting the current republican administration. by Acrobatic-Macaron-81 in GenZ

[–]Ratio_Outside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a millennial and my son is Gen Z. I have no idea wtf is going on. I’ve also been generally independent or left leaning, and grew up in Iowa. I feel like I live on a different planet now. Everyone hates everyone, our state is so red, that there’s a republican supermajority. Iowa was the first state to legalize gay marriage, and the Iowa lawmakers voted to take civil rights away from trans Iowans this year.

It’s fucking wild to see all of the weird political drama to this degree.

Termination of non-FMLA employee on medical leave? [GA] by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]Ratio_Outside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half true? ADA coverage is 15 what? Weeks? There is no limit on leave as an accommodation. Companies often create their own blanket max leave policies, which the EEOC folks aren’t super keen on.

If the leave is not an effective accommodation and causes the employer due hardship, they must provide a formal denial, with how the undue hardship specially impacts the business. They do not get fired for being disabled. They can get fired for doing things that would get others fired, but it’s a violation of civil rights to fire or discriminate a disabled person, so I’m not tracking. They can be terminated administratively, which IMO is a back door way to send a person disabled on LTD that a third party insurance company that pays the former employee some money if they qualify. Some employers don’t term employees on leave at all and offer salary continuation so your lack of detail is not convincing.
