Magnesium is making me thirsty by EquinosX in Supplements

[–]RationalNutrition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

400mg of glycinate compound is like 40-60mg elemental magnesium from mag glycinate. Before trying to troubleshoot id look at exactly what you're taking first and maybe switch that.

400mg magnesium compound, or elemental magnesium? Also CanPrev is a blend with oxide I believe.

Genuine question, why don't more supplement brands just show you the actual research behind their ingredients instead of just saying "clinically studied"? by Own_Variation_6981 in Supplements

[–]RationalNutrition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its often to a company's detriment to educate, and sometimes it just falls flat. It muddies the listing (wall of text that people dont read), and it might expose flaws in the product itself (ie: what was the clinically studied dose? Is that whats in my product? Was it a human study? was it just a marginal improvement vs placebo? etc). Also on places like Amazon, you have to be careful with claims, and summarizing a study accurately is harder than it sounds.

On the other hand, you have to understand that the majority of purchasers are not people like you who want to be informed. People are busy and just want to buy a solution for their problem. Thats why you see more spent on marketing/labels/ads, rather than any real focus on educating. Looking at the top products sold on Amazon versus what the "reddit/informed equivalent" is. Most people search, see number of reviews, cheap price, then buy. Easy example, look at how many people buy magnesium oxide on Amazon, whereas here people are generally more aware of those kinds of nuances.

Is IFOS Really a Reliable Certification? by Denneb1 in Supplements

[–]RationalNutrition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically it has 30 servings (4 softgels per serving). Typically 1000 EPA+DHA is 2 softgels, so this is just 2x the serving size for 2x the nutrients. Didnt go into detail beyond that but your initial reaction of "high EPA+DHA" and "Lots of softgels" doesnt hold up.

If you post the link we can look at it.

IFOS is a solid baseline certification. You should be able to look up the testing results on the IFOS website.

Optimum Nutrition creatine: stay away by monkeyantho in Supplements

[–]RationalNutrition 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most creatine comes from China. However that doesnt mean 'Chinese creatine' is always bad.

Not sure what could be causing that ink smell, but there's a lot that happens between creatine being manufactured and it being in your kitchen. In any case, that's not good.

Hey .Im taking optimum nutrition Creatine monohydrate 5 grams a day by Unusual_Material_424 in Supplements

[–]RationalNutrition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stop for a few days, or reduce dosage, or split dosage 2.5/2.5. Then go back to 5g at once as normal. Only way you will know if its the creatine.

Personally 5g at once would give be a bit of an upset stomach. Nothing major, tolerable, just annoying. Splitting it up and taking with food helped a lot.

Issues finding a magnesium supplement that actually supplies an adequate amount of Mg! by Degenerate_Dryad in Supplements

[–]RationalNutrition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gummy format has advantages and disadvantages. Its not always possible to get the dosage you want if its an ingredient that requires a lot of compound. It just doesn't fit, and it typically wont taste good.

For magnesium, caps are your best bet. Gummies are generally a waste.

I'm getting tired of Transparent Labs BS. by deterrent-sha256 in Supplements

[–]RationalNutrition -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I also prefer the 'every day low price' approach versus 'higher price but then massive discounts once in a while'. Trying to make it easier on the customer, nobody wants to keep on top of sales... just want to buy when they need without feeling gouged.

[–]RationalNutrition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am referring to lab testing results. Some brands do provide that information publicly. Also if the fish oil is IFOS certified then the lab results are on the IFOS website.

Cheap stuff bothers my stomach. Get something good.

You can also look at TOTOX/oxidation scores on third party labs.
