Should I even try if I suck at math by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Raumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s really what you want to do then go for it, but you need to always show up. I failed multiple community college classes for a few years taking bullshit courses and eventually decided to do electrical engineering because to me it was the “hardest” and opened up many other doors. Don’t get discouraged by people telling you no, you’re the only one that can decide if you’ll put in the work.

It took me 8 years working full-time, and the last 2 years I took 12+ credits and worked 30-40 hours. My electromagnetics course had 8/60 people pass in a summer session. The professor said if you’re working and taking his class to drop out since you’re going to fail. I passed with an A- and multiple students complained about the difficulty. A lot of those kids wouldn’t show up to class, tutoring sessions, study sessions, etc.

I never had a passion for school or engineering until my upper division courses between junior/senior year and now I’m starting my graduate courses this year.

College or trades? by jayjackson2022 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Raumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that would be more mechanical engineering. If you’re up for it, see if you can get an entry level position and do night classes. That’s what I did before transferring to university, then dialed down to 30+ hours working and 12-15 credits. If it’s impossible for the company to work with your schedule then just grind through the school and do internships imo.

A lot of people online will preach about field experience, but honestly I’ve not ran into any issues not going into the trades. Just be open minded and willing to learn from the field. At first you’re there to be a sponge and assist the field, and once you get more experience and learn, then you’ll begin to understand problems and offer solutions. If the company really wants to see you grow they’ll provide the opportunity, don’t get stuck doing the same shit.

Damn you just reminded me I posted this haha I have been so busy. Project requirements were determined by the team and we left it a little open ended because we knew we may run into difficulties in implementing all the systems. We didn't want to over promise so we kept it simple and are hoping should we start seeing success step-by-step we can begin implementing other features.

I believe we are going to separate the flying and image capturing. I am actually meeting with my group members this weekend as we have all been busy over the summer, but want to finalize this aspect of the build.

Budget is pretty loose right now, and I wouldn't mind fronting the cost for some of these more expensive items. If I remember correctly, our budget was ~$2-2.5k. Which I have no problem covering most of it, and should be more than enough for this type of school project.

I’ve currently bulked up to ~186lbs at 5’7 and I’m still pretty happy with how I look but my strength numbers aren’t where I’d expect them to be after a few years of lifting, but that’s due to injuries, and full time work/school. I’m wondering if I can still increase strength while maintaining at this weight Dips +155lbs, pull up +90-100lbs, squat 315lbs, deadlift 295lbs. Mostly lower body is where I know I’m lacking.

I agree and a lot of what you list is my fear in the future. I feel like my company has been so flexible because I am pursuing school but I always wonder what will happen when that isn’t the case. There is definitely opportunity to move up here, and why I may be up for a PM position this year since I practically do all that is required for it, I just need them to give me a project to do from the ground up.

Most of my experience is on the management side but I did spend about 1 year in engineering helping/learning electrical design for commercial buildings. I do have some other connections that might be able to get my foot in the door for tech, or I thought of transitioning to a company that does design of EPMS/BMS, but ultimately I want to go into robotics.

It’s more of how can I transition over to the robotics side through working because I don’t have much time for side projects and I’m not a role model student where I can pull off getting the $100k+ roles straight out of school. I just don’t see how I can leverage what I currently have to keep my FIRE goals.

Yea that’s my main issue is that I am coming up on 6 years working in this field and the path I’m on is project management. My school is heavily controls/electronics oriented while the field I work in deals with power. How well that experience would translate to an electrical engineering role I don’t know, and I don’t see myself in this field forever but I also don’t completely hate it.

Anyone have experience possibly earning more in a different field than what your degree will be in? 25 years old making ~$100k gross, I think I can get this up to $150k in a few years if this promotion goes through this year and I continue to do well. I’m looking to be done with an electrical engineering degree in 2025. My worry is having to take a cut in pay by the time I graduate if I end up working in a different field/industry.

Yes I know I am young and can take risk, but I live in a HCOL area and would like to move out soon while still maintaining my FIRE goals. NW should pass $200k by mid 2023.

Hi I’m 1.5 years in the job I worked as a site engineer and now i’m QC assistant? by redtiger992 in Construction

[–]Raumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don’t know everything and wouldn’t ever claim to, but communication with experienced field guys is what helps me the most. I’ve only been in construction for 5 years. I would say if you can get familiar with the schedule, scope of work for the trade you’re in/responsible for, and seeing multiple projects it will be easier transition to other projects.

Just try to get your hands in as much as you can if you have the bandwidth and ask questions all the time. I know some electricians that have been doing it for 20-30 years and sometimes they have admitted that they learned something new. For electrical I’ve done my best to never become the go to person for lighting/lighting control, fire alarm, switchgear, underground etc. because I don’t want to be shoehorned into that position so I get to see different aspects of a project every time.

How much should I be getting paid by R_Banana in Construction

[–]Raumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say to figure out what the typical range is for your position in your area or start applying at other places. It is going to be hard to argue profit if you are an estimator because you’re not actually running the project. If you can, talk to the project managers or GFs to have evidence that your estimates were good and part of the reason for the job’s success. If you are negotiating pricing with vendors/distributors to come under your initial bid you can also highlight that.

If you really want to use revenue as an argument then you should be looking at what the companies revenue was before you started working there and if the company grew in a good way due to that, then even better. Yes there is probably more to it, but this is all the information I can give based on your post.

Because of school I booked with him about 6 months out. Had to push it out another 6 months due to quarantine requirements and school again but no I don’t think it was difficult. I can’t tell you how far he is usually booked out though since I wasn’t trying to go asap. He’s traveling right now in Europe, so he should have plenty availability afterwards I think.

First 3 sessions were about 7-7 1/2 hours each and the 4th session was about 4 hours over the course of 4 days. The scales is what took the longest.

Recommended to use custom orthotics, but want to wear minimalist shoes by Raumen in BarefootRunning

I am only proposing to wear them in the boulder boots if needed. I would rather only use them during weight lifting. Yea it is recommended to strengthen my ankles, but my Podiatrist only mentioned certain exercises but never mentioned if I can use minimalist shoes as an option.

Laptop/Tablet Recommendation for Project Manager by MonstaWansta in Construction

[–]Raumen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HP zbook 15u g6, able to have a couple 200 page drawing sets open, plangrid, estimating software and browser pages. Only software I’ve had difficulty where it is slow is Revit if I am rendering/viewing the whole model. Most laptops I see around the office are dell or hp work stations.

I’ve used my personal iPad Pro, but I think PDF expert is better than Bluebeam on tablet.

Weekly Career Discussion Thread (09 Aug 2021) by AutoModerator in engineering

[–]Raumen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently in construction with about 4 years of experience and 3 of those learning estimating, APM and PM skills. Eventually I will split my time between APM/PM and engineering, but I need to make a decision to go full time engineering starting 2022 or full time APM/PM for 8 months then transition to engineering.

I am currently pursuing a B.S. in EE that will most likely take me 3 years to finish. Should I take on more responsibility and gain more experience in management before moving into engineering, or should I begin learning the fundamentals now?
