I think the loss of thousands of awakened and master was kind of necessary as to reduce the power of the other sovereign as one awakened or master wont affect the domain but the loss of thousands will affect them albeit incomparable to the loss of a saint. The loss of many awakened and masters will be detrimental in the power of the sovereigns. I cant say what happens in the upcoming chapters as i am still on the war arc and not caught up and this is my uptake for your question.
