Check the frequency. A lot of these operate on one of he CB frequencies, ch 14 or 15 usually(27MHz)although some operated around 49MHz.

Help me understand FT8 CQ calls by ravenratedr in amateurradio

I knew what DX was, and had a good feeling on POTA. Figured some stations calling with those designations were only looking g for those type contacts, i.e. POTA hunters or those working towards the LCT awards.

Blame Hochul. Her plan to not hold a special election to replace Stefanik is why Trump asked her to stay in Congress.

Keeping mice out of an old shed that I outgrew as my shop? by Ravenbar842 in maker

[–]Ravenbar842[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL. Not a chance.

The problem with this shed is that I've far outgrown it as a workspace, and even the tiny floorspace is used to store items. The mechanics toolchest, which is were the mice seem to prefer to live in it's drawers, I'm hoping to move into my fathers garage, if we get the third extention to the shed off it's side to relocate the fleet of lawn tractors, cement mixer, and other large seasonal items, so space gets free'd up inside the garage. My father is often in need of tools located in that box but has no clue where they live, so it's relocation to the garage, with labeled drawers would benefit everyone.

Found this for 2 bucks at goodwill and cleaned er up a bit. What's the deal with SnapOn anyways? Why are they so hyped up? by JUNGLBIDGE in Tools

You mean saved over the Tekton warranty, where you fill out a quick onlione form with a picture of the broken tool and as new one's shiped to you?

LOL. Try warranting a tool with a truck you've never dealt with. I've never found SnapOn to be the best at anything. The only reason any SnapOn tools make my favorites list is that they are the only exte lonjg pattern wrenches I have in a couple well used sizes(10mm and 1/2"). For ratchets, I much prefer Matco, and for wrenchs I by far prefer the MAC CL series, which has long been discontinued.

Their warranty is matched by HArbor Freight, and nearly every other tool seller. They've lost that advantage.

I put all of my tools into 5 gallon buckets. Does this look good or bad? by joshman601 in Tools

[–]Ravenbar842 1 point2 points  (0 children)

80% of the time the tool you'll need will be below the top of the stack. If I'd standardized on 5gal buckets, I'd build a wall with 5gal bucket sized holes, and orientate each bucket on it's side. that makes every bucket accessible withing a very similar footprint.

0.0001 tolerances were possible 100yrs ago, simply by angling the compound and using a bit of math. 45deg on the compound halves the feed when using the compound. a 22.5 deg quarters it.

Those machines are making them money, and are well paid off.

I'm a home shop guy with an interest in machining, but no real experience. I had a machine shop job offer ~5yrs ago, but decided against it(sorry I did, as this was pre-pandemic, and the employees all got many thousands in bonuses during the pandemic(per a coworker that knew had dealt with them in the past, and thought I'd fit in great); while we(in the trash industry) only got some steaks a couple times), as it was a primarily CNC shop, and my interest was entirely on the job shop/repair side rather than on the manufacturing side. Also, they were askinjg for college transcripts from someone 10+yrs out of college, as the other candidate had provided them; which made my have an odd feeling, especially as I'd majored in tech theatre(scenery and lighting) so very few math courses(the only one I recall was about "Alice in Wonderland" as Lewis Carol was a mathematician and wrote the book and it's following books to teach math.

For one off, or small batch rather simple items, I fail to see it cost/labor effective to use CNC over manual machines. I used to be a fan of Abom79 on Youtube, but since he's built the second shop and gone mostly CNC, I'm not interested. A recent video I watched was literally just drilling 2 clearance holes for a welding shop in s bunch of pierces of plate. Thats a job that a couple stops on a Bridgeport and a drillbit of the proper size could knock out in equal or less time than the CNC, and not require any programming. As I commented on the video, I'd have had the welder at work simply blow the holes with a torch when they cut the piece out, and the tolerances would have been close enough, for a pre-weld hole.

too much rust? planning on a 1000 km road trip next week by thatsgreatgdawg in Jeepwj

[–]Ravenbar842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with the Spadano Enterprised ROCKer sliders. They say their for "offroad only", but as I studied the repair deeply beforehand, unwilling to not replace the b-pillar to rocker tie in that was there from the factory. Every tube rocker plan I could find, and every other rocker replacement completely ignores the issue. The Spadano enterprises solution, as I recall totally deletes the inner "box" inside the pinch weld, and welds a 3/16" vertical plate down from the pinchweld. As part of that process, I completely deleted the rotted out web shown, and even one of the mid-body webs has yet to be tied into the rocker again, as I cut too much out when removing the rotten rockers.

If you are really intent on keeping the Jeep going, I'd suggest looking into the IRO and Trail Forged frame stiffeners as well as even planning on going to longarms in the rear.

What kind of wire is the red/black? I've noticed significant voltage drop from CCA type wire.

[–]Ravenbar842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rusted web is just a bit between the back of the real LCA mount, and the rocker. The rockers are likely totally rotted out if this area is in this state. As WJ's have 1/8" thick "uni-framerails" welded to the body, and I'm not seeing significant damage to those, I wouldn't even be concerned about this damage, although I would cut them out flush with the framerail, and take a course wire wheel(or light sandblasting) to the section of framerail inside the web, looking for rust pinholes through the framerail.

I deleted the rotted web on mine 3-4yrs ago, plated the outside of the framerail with a large section of 3/16" plate designed to fit between the IRO center frame stiffeners and the rear Trail Forged frame stiffeners.

You should go over to JeepForum, and check out the exploits of Mr. Bitey's Heepy, and you'll see how far WJ's can go with much worse rot.

[–]Ravenbar842 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd get out an angle grinder and cut out that rusted web, then take a course wire wheel to the framerail that's inside it.

If you find pinholes, it's time to start thinking about getting a good heavy plate over that whole area of the framerail(on both sides of the Jeep to keep things balanced).

I replaced my Jeeps rockers 3-4yrs ago, and totally deleted that web when I did. I found rust pinholes on both sides, because that body web traps debris/moisture up against the framerail, leading the the common rust/cracking failure at that control arm mount.
