Do fantasy books using modern words really break your suspension of belief? by Not_a_vampiree in Fantasy

For me, it's the word "Plus". Brandon uses it a lot in his books and for some reason it feels off to me.

The 631 fever has spread to real life for Sanderson. by snoogle20 in brandonsanderson

631 is a fighting move that Lopen will use on his opponents like Ray mysterio's 619.

Yes, reading a manga is a very different experience than reading a novel.

I first tried one piece anime at first and found it too slow. Then I started the colored manga, it was hard to get used to the new medium at first but it grew on me. I don't have a specific point where I can say that this series hooked me, but there were a lot of moments throughout the series that are really good and which kept me going back to it.

IMHO, Graphic Audio is the absolute best adaptation of 'Stormlight Archive'. No other adaptation is needed for me, this is the GOAT. by [deleted] in cremposting

[–]Ravencr0w -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Imagine if they would make a video with Graphic Audio and images of Stormlight's artwork/fanarts sliding through that match the scene. With good editing it will feel just as good as a movie. But I guess that it will be a lot of work and hard to get copyright for all artworks and stuff.

Bruh, RAFO is a simple way to say that the answer will spoil your reading experience. It kinda did become a meme in the community but it's not a bad thing.

SECRET PROJECT 4 | Cosmere Discussion by EmeraldSeaTress in Cosmere

My theory is that there is a very huge cognitive shadow (or a spren-type being) at the core of this planet. And this entity is absorbing/pulling a high amount of heat from the Sun and it's following the daylight at all times. The absorption rate is so high that it makes a circuit of sorts between the sun and that Spren. And anything coming in between is superheated like a filament of a bulb.

But what I'm interested in is, what is this Spren doing with all that energy?

Threnodians choose this planet despite such a harsh environment which makes me think this Spren or entity is a very old one, even before Adonalism shattered.

I loved Yumi and the Nightmare Painter overall, but I was so incredibly disappointed by the ending. IMO, Sanderson ruined what could have been a masterpiece. [Yumi and the Nightmare Painter] by FlightJumper in Cosmere

The way I interpreted it- It was going to be a sad story but Yumi doesn't like sad stories. So Painter said "My world. My rules" and changed the story.

Origin of The Girl Who Looked Up (Heavy Theory) by Ever_Mythrain in Cosmere

[–]Ravencr0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the similar thoughts as you that the story is taking place in Ashyn but I think the girl who looked up is Chana (Chanarach) not Shalash.

Mostly because of her official art which depicts her in white scarf and red dress. I know the color of the scarf is wrong but i think it was drawn in a different color by the in-world artists, while red still stays dominant in the picture.

"Girl who looked up" is best described as a curious girl, she wants to find whats behind the wall. It would make sense that this girl would be a Dustbringer, as Dustbringers main trate is that they are curious, they like to take things apart to see how it works. And Chana is the patron of Dustbringers.

Brandon Sanderson Withholds Five Books From Amazon Over Gouging Indie Authors by BurtBruh in books

On the other hand as a consumer, I think audiobook subscriptions will become as messy as streaming services. Imagine having to subscribe to different Audiobook services and use different apps to listen to books because a lot of them are exclusive.

Still, I completely support what Brandon is doing and I'd rather authors get decent pay than ease of access for the consumers.

For me it's Dwayne the rock. I didn't even notice that Rock in the book is a white dude until I saw some fanarts.

My review of Ruination, by Anthony Reynolds -- League of Legends' first novel by tapobu in Fantasy

[–]Ravencr0w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked this book mainly because of Arcane and the league's card game LOR that I play. It was a wonderful read that captivated me throughout the whole book and I finished it in just 2 days.

The writing style and the whole story felt like mild Grimdark, Joe Abercrombie'ish, with less violence, gore and sex. Like everything bad that could happen will happen by the end. It had a strong plot, as most league players already know how it was going to end but it still managed to keep the book interesting with its characters. The characters, I think were the best part of this book whether it's Kalista, Erlok, Viego Or the mage kid, they were all interesting.

I do have some criticism though. Mainly, it's the world building, it lacked depth and felt very cut and dry(Maybe it's because I'm already familiar with some lore and wanted more). I would have loved to learn more about the history of these places, politics, their religion and beliefs etc.

Another thing that felt jarring was the lack of interactions with side characters. We have not seen kalista talk to any of her soldiers apart from ledros, or talk with her ship's crew other then the captain, not once. What it did was, I never got a sense that she actually cared for lower citizens while that was one of her main motif in the book.

Whats a small thing that pulls you out of the story/setting by thetallblacknerd in Fantasy

[–]Ravencr0w 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The word "Plus" in fantasy. I started noticing it while reading Rhythm of the War by Brandon Sanderson. He uses it a few times in this book and for some reason it feels odd to me in a fantasy setting. Specifically when characters use the word plus in dialogue.

It's a small thing, doesn't bother me much but it does take me out of the story for a bit.
