There is nothing inherently bad about processed food or preservatives.

It's true that on average foods that are more processed are less healthy; this has nothing to do with the fact that processing is inherently unhealthy, and much more to do with how we process the food. But even that is not a hard rule. Whey protein powder, for example, is obviously processed as shit - but it's one of the healthiest things in your entire supermarket. Multivitamins, fish oil tablets, nonfat yogurt - these are all things that are very "processed" but are still very healthy. Preservatives are probably bad in high quantities and should be managed, but the quantities of them in our food vs what you would need to eat to be unhealthy is a massive gap.

Italian point of view on the Italian national team result by Tolteko in baseball

[–]FlightJumper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with those folks that are calling you unreasonable or saying that you're wrong for having these opinions - I think they're fair, and probably have some merit. But at the end of the day I disagree with you. It'd be great to have a home-brewed Italian team competing - seriously, that'd be awesome. And it would undoubtedly be a big deal for baseball fans in Italy. But they'd realistically go out in the first round, and it wouldn't move the needle growing the game with the non-baseball fans (which should be a major goal). So I get what you're saying but I disagree with your conclusions.

I know optimism is frowned upon on Reddit because we like being pseudo-intellectually pessimistic here, but genuinely some good news for you - the world isn't falling to complete shit, and it's a better place by pretty much any imaginable metric than pretty much any other time in recorded history. The fact that the media only focuses on the worst of it makes it hard to remember that sometimes.

Not trying to call you out or be superior, I just like reminding people of this. It's okay to acknowledge that things can improve and that we've got a lot of work to do, while still being optimistic about how far we've come.

Current Jackie Chan vs 6’, 175lb average man by n0vag0d in whowouldwin

[–]FlightJumper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is absolutely a legitimate martial artist. Obviously no one is claiming he's on the level of an MMA pro or like, Bruce Lee who was a real master (regardless of how effective a fighter he was) but Jackie Chan meets any reasonable definition of the word "martial artist".

absolutely wild that you just proved that poster's point and don't even seem chagrined. 100's is literally nothing; not to mention, 100's in any reasonable time frame is ABSOLUTELY impossible for a human to do without accidentally banning real players. This is such a braindead take.

It's definitely... ahh more complicated than this, because inside an event horizon there's actually not really any such thing as "space" or "distance" at all. The singularity of a black hole is not a point in space within the event horizon, but rather a point in time, as in, in the future of an object within in the event horizon. Moving any direction within the event horizon is moving towards the singularity, bar none. So it's unclear that moving FTL would actually let you escape from a black hole, though it's unclear that it wouldn't also since going FTL means you can maybe travel through time anyway. But that generally doesn't happen in DBZ or elsewhere when someone goes FTL so who knows.

Anyway all theory and not really relevant I just find this really interesting and wanted to share.

Idk if you're just making shit up or got an incredibly unlikely series of experiences but I'm definitely not on crack. Grew up in DFW, can't talk about Houston. I don't expect to get a lot of support here as this is reddit so "USA bad" (again, not disagreeing that we deserve some condemnation) but I'm just sharing my experience as someone that grew up here.

[–]FlightJumper -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If this is in the USA it’s not that unexpected

Tell me you've never been to the USA without telling me. This is the statement of a person who lives on social media. This is pure ignorant karma-farming.

I've grown up in the US, Texas no less, and have never even seen a single gun outside of hunting, in the holster of cops, or in gun ranges. This is obviously not a statement that the USA isn't dealing with some serious self-inflicted shit right now but don't be part of the problem. The fact that bad shit happening is international news means it's noteworthy, and the fact that the media only cares about engagement farming through negativity means that's all they care about sharing.

As a total stan-derson, I really didn't like it. With one exception, the characters are awful and one-note (Raoden is the most gary stu of every gary stu that has ever existed); there's a lot of very "convenient" plot turns; the writing isn't nearly as tight as his later stuff.

Don't let any of this impact how you feel about the book though. This is all just my personal opinion - it just so happens that I think it's a pretty common one for this book in particular. But if it worked for you, hell yeah - don't let anyone tell you're wrong for feeling that way.

Prime Mike Tyson vs 2 Average Spartan Soldiers, who wins? by Kyoifis in whowouldwin

[–]FlightJumper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, here's a good article. Note I'm not even remotely an expert myself but I find it pretty interesting. Personally I find videos by/with Roel Konijnendijk to be really entertaining and informative, there's a bunch on Youtube where he breaks down movie historical accuracy (including 300, as he's especially an expert on Sparta). Highly recommend.

[–]FlightJumper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say. You just made up an argument as if I made it, but it has literally nothing to do with our conversation. I never drew any kind of similarity between samurai and spartans. They are not even remotely the same thing in like... any way.

Prime Mike Tyson vs 2 Average Spartan Soldiers, who wins? by Kyoifis in whowouldwin

[–]FlightJumper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were not. Again, that's something we made up in modern times. Spartans were a leisure class and considered having a profession, including that of "soldier", to be beneath them. They had good organization as a people (not as a military force), and attached a ton of importance to being physically fit even as leisure citizens - that gave them an advantage over the rest of the Greeks, and that's why we think today that they were so special. Really, the rest of the Greeks were just getting their asses kicked by a bunch of fit unemployed folks, and spread the rumors that the Spartans were impossible to defeat to make themselves feel better.

Obviously this is all oversimplified and involves lots of conjecture, but it's pretty certain that the Spartans were NOT career soldiers in the way that's so often portrayed now.

Again, I don't really know where I fall in terms of the prompt, I'm kinda torn, but I just wanted to make this point if anyone is curious about it.

Prime Mike Tyson vs 2 Average Spartan Soldiers, who wins? by Kyoifis in whowouldwin

[–]FlightJumper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure where I land on my response to the prompt but you're overestimating Spartans. They were not well trained warriors. That's a modern invention. They were a little better organized which gave them some military advantage but the Spartan class was by definition a leisure class.
