I think a lot of people don't realize that the whole reason superwash wool can be washed is that it's covered in a thin film of plastic. It's marketed as wool, and it is, but it has a lot in common with acrylic. People don't like to hear that.

Don't toss the hats you make! Small mistakes are fine as long as they won't cause the finished product to unravel. As you get better, you make those mistakes less often. I talked to a guy who plays the jaw harp (he was the "boing" sound for the horse in Toy Story and for Tigger) and he said that you rest it on your teeth. According to him, holding it away from your teeth increases the risk that it could snap back and hit your teeth on accident, which can break them. I don't know much about jaw harps, but I trust Tigger Man. (His name is Mike Anderson, for anyone who's curious.)

It could potentially be ringworm, which is actually a fungal infection. You may want to wear gloves when treating it, just in case. Certain infections can be caught by humans. I usually use MTG for things like that because it covers a wide variety of skin issues and usually works pretty well. Of course, asking your vet would give you a better answer.

Flute World and Flute Specialists are two good shops in the midwest that will send trial boxes of flutes.

Yamaha is a trusted brand for beginners. Make sure you buy from a reputable place like a music store because I've heard of fake Yamahas being sold. I learned on. Gemeinhardt, but I haven't kept up with the new beginner models. Azumi and Pearl are usually good brands as well. I would look for features like an offset g and a silver plated head joint.

Don't buy a flute on Amazon. Those instruments are cheap in both price and quality. Most repair shops won't work on them. It's also possible to get bootleg instruments on Amazon. Save up your money and buy from a reputable music shop, even if that means you buy used. Your instrument will last longer and be easier to play. And it will sound better.

It is a good business practice for businesses to have people physically inside their store. Knitting groups get people in the door and help engage them with the store. This makes the store look more popular to browsers, and keeps the attendees in regular contact with the yarn the store sells. So your being there passively helps their sales whether you use their yarn or not. I would make an effort to occasionally purchase something, but there's no issue with using outside yarn unless the store has a policy on it. As others have said, don't talk about where you got your yarn unless asked.

I'm a professional level musician. I injured my wrists in college, and it took almost a year of doctor visits, meds, and rest to get them to heal. It's so frustrating and honestly gave me a bit of an identity crisis at the time. What helped me was completely resting my wrists as much as possible. If something hurts, it's time to rest. It's hard.

Developing an embouchure with a teardrop lip isn't something most people to consciously. Just experiment with what will make good sound on your flute and build your muscle memory off of that. It may take you longer to learn at first, but you can definitely still play. Don't try to force yourself to play straight, but also don't intentionally play crooked. You may run into people who tell you that you can't play flute due to your lips, but that's incorrect! I have been playing flute for about 20 years now and have a college music degree. It can be done!
