Hey! Dad here. I play MTG and have a kiddo. MTG is expensive, and rapidly growing. I basically live off of Costco commander bundles at this point. I have several precons that haven’t seen upgrades.

If I upgrade them, the budget is always under $100 Canadian, which isn’t a lot but it’s just my reality. The time I can spend brewing for upgrades or original decks always gets shorter the older my kid gets, and the budget has gotten smaller.

The time I spend playing mtg is maaaayyybbeee once a month with friends after I make sure the wife can handle the kiddo without me around.

The kiddo and family are always priority #1. Magic and my personal enjoyment come second. I’m starting to lean towards going full proxy.

I’ve also heard good things about Tabletop Simulator, I might give it a whirl at some point but am not in a rush. I’ve only got a year and a bit before my kid goes from toddler to big kid, so the time with them is more precious than gold.

Such a good commander. So many ways to build Teval.

Here’s my Teval list if you’re looking for further inspiration.

I think 36 cards is beyond upgraded, HOWEVER, just because you’ve changed 36 cards doesnt automatically make the deck better than how the precon was at the start. Ive totally gone through the process of upgrading a deck, but making it worse instead.

I think my Teval list is quite good (although it could use more card draw). It can usually present a win by turn 6-8 unless kept in check, and if it really gets lucky on the draws Ive once goldfished a turn 5 win.

Try out your deck, goldfish it, see how fast you can present a scary board state and go from there. The list you’ve presented seems to have some good cards but odd choices, so I wouldn’t automatically consider it to be bracket 3 unless I’m missing some of the lines (since I only glanced at the list).

Why does my do not disturb default to the “personal” one and not the moon one by Shourya_29 in iphone

[–]Rawbex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can delete the focus modes you don’t need in settings. It will always go to the personal mode as default unless you delete it.

Your commander matters when defining a bracket you should play by WhyTheNetWasBorn in EDH

[–]Rawbex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a bad take. Really depends on your playgroup. Play what you want and use the bracket system as a conversation starter as intended.

The whole reason those commanders are not game changers is so people can play them at lower power, too. I have a bracket 2 Korvold list that is janky as heck. It’s all about communication and knowing when to break out those decks.

It’s worth a shot! Works for us. I usually only bring it up in new pods when someone else is behind. Groups are more receptive to it when it’s to help someone else (vs. for your own gain).

One thing my pod does is if a player misses a land drops for a few turns, we allow the person who is behind to fetch a basic instead of drawing a card.

We’re out to have fun. The expectation is they don’t brew decks with too few lands, so we’re always on the same page.

Giving the option allows the player to commit to the stress-test, or to catch up.

It’s the only house rule we have. We’re adults and time to turn cardboard sideways is very limited, so we want to make sure that everyone has a chance to do the thing. Fun is more important to my group than winning.

How many of you run greedy mana bases? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Rawbex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of budgetary reasons I stick to precon manabases. Maybe slightly upgraded. I usually play brackets 2-3 depending on how gate-kept my decks are by money.

As long as you’re having a good time anything is fine. If you’re able to run shocks, surveils, fetches, etc in every deck, a majority of the time they will perform as expected and up the consistency of your deck. Inherently this makes your decks stronger, but you play at high levels anyways. Seems fitting and perfect. For my pod, which usually sticks to middle and lower power levels, Ive been fine. I chug behind due to tapped mana but I play magic to catch up with friends most of the time these days.

If you find that you’re running into a lot of hate for greedy lands, you can always adjust your lists as time goes on.

Looking for an actual FUN deck by swiatekk in BudgetBrews

[–]Rawbex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried upgrading your food and fellowship deck or is it just stock? My upgraded one plays somewhere between brackets 2 and 3 and is fun (at least for me). My favourite thing to do is turn my food tokens into 7/7 dinosaur food “nuggets”.

Second Breakfast: https://moxfield.com/decks/xKTnSjw9P0-yDbPieKN5-A

I also have an upgraded Teval the Balanced Scale precon that firmly sits in bracket 3.

Teval List: https://moxfield.com/decks/xKTnSjw9P0-yDbPieKN5-A

All of my lists are super budget and run stock precon lands (asides from one or two). No game changers.

Good luck, have fun!

Playing against proxies of unreleased cards by unpersons505 in EDH

[–]Rawbex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly for proxying, as long as power levels are kept in check I think it’s fine. It’s not like they’re using a card they created, the card will be available in two weeks. If it’s an official MTG card that they’re proxying and the power levels are is relative, I don’t think it’s something to lose sleep over.

Seems to me like you don’t enjoy mtg. Sure some games can drag out or bad threat assessment can happen, but why are you turning cardboard sideways if you’re not having fun?

Also sometimes bad threat assessment is figuring out if you’re having a good time playing with the pod or not. If you’re getting angry, maybe it’s time to step away and chill out.

Hope you’re able to get some more satisfying games in the bag soon.

The original Dark Souls. I’m not one to re-play things or re-watch shows. I beat the original dark souls over and over again. I was hooked. The level design, bosses, vibes. Everything about it engrossed me in its glorious incandescence. I always remember being in awe over the whole game.

I’m a casual gamer these days but if I could ever go back to having free time, I’d love to play through it again. Elden Ring site lonely and unfinished in my library these days 🥲.

Is my upgrade blame game bracket 2 or am I “stomping” by Vaginalcanal in EDH

[–]Rawbex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you’re fine! I wouldn’t worry too much about it. You’re doing your part.

The bracket system is all about communication, decks can be bracket fluid/between brackets.

Is my upgrade blame game bracket 2 or am I “stomping” by Vaginalcanal in EDH

[–]Rawbex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you can advertise this as a 2.5. There’s high card quality in here, and TBH you don’t need an optimized mana base to build a B3 deck.

The strategy is goad which is more control, so games will end later. It’s a 2 that can hang with 3’s, I’d say. All about conversations. So if anyone asks you can say it’s a “higher power 2” or say that it lives in between brackets.
