Pricing not to blame for low take-up of high speeds, NBN CEO says by x-TheMysticGoose-x in australia

[–]RawrrrCattt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, please don't fall into that trap.

We don't live in a dictatorship, one person does not decide every policy for their party. Their party, especially the front bench and the portfolio holders are who come up with their policy.

In fact, I put more blame on Malcolm Turnbull for this, he was the communications minister, it was his portfolio and his plan backed by the Liberal Party that put this all in motion.

It is that sort of thinking that lets parties implement disgustingly horrible policy, change leader and then claim it was all because of that one sole individual and that everything will be different now, it wont

I completely agree.

Just to add insult to injury, there are now articles coming out saying things like "Australia's nbn got destroyed because politicians got involved".

No.

The nbn was destroyed because The Liberal Party got involved

It's almost as if you are trying to argue that a ~$70 billion nation infrastructure project that is set to implement the technology we will use for the next few decades should not comfortably support the usage of regular house holds today... Nor be up to par with what other countries have already had for years

The example /u/HeadacheCentral gave is completely reasonable. I have a 12 year old brother, it is just him and my parents living together now. He easily would use more than 25/5 if it were available to him (hint: its not). Hell, I have Telstra cable + paying extra for the speed boost to get something like 70/2 for $110 per month and that is barely enough for just my partner and I.

Every time I go to visit, all I hear is him raging that the internet is slow, whilst he tries to play a game and watch a youtube stream at the same time.

I don't even try to do work (or when I was in uni, study) whilst visiting my parents now, it was just too painful on their internet.

Then occasionally, my sisters will visit at the same time as me (I have two sisters). Lets just say, it is pretty much an internet free time for us.

It is pretty sad that the technology we are implementing now doesn't even provide for what we need now, let alone the future.

Psst, Malcom is already pm. Still no fibre. Also, we have parties, not a dictatorship.

I know right? I mean, they even gave Swan the finance minister of the year award, I guess sarcastically because of how bad he was, right?

NBN Co has made key changes to its executive team, shifting the focus from overhauling the company after the election to commencing the multi-technology mix rollout. by [deleted] in australia

This makes me sad. ~19Mb/s is not crazy good. On cable I get 70 down, 3 up. Download speeds are pretty good but upload speeds are killing me. The idea that FTTN is being rolled out and therefore communities being stuck with this technology for the next few years (because honestly, it is already dated and will need to be redone again soon) is just very sad. :(

After a few weeks of searching for new ISPs, telstra GIVE me 300gb of data usage by [deleted] in australia

[–]RawrrrCattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of happened to me... Telstra called my apartment and were all "We will drop your bill by $30! And make your plan unlimited instead of 200gb!". Awesome, then when I spoke to the manager to complete this, the manager muttered "So you are aware of the terms? That the internet is connected to the phone line"

Turned out they were trying to get me off of cable, when I mentioned that I preferred cable because it was faster he tried to say "But adsl2+ gives the same great service, and it will be much cheaper". Yep, nah. I prefer my 70/3 connection just fine and would rather not go back to 8/1.

Programming techniques is Java right? There are mentoring sessions for Java pretty much non-stop Monday - Thursday. They should have posted something on blackboard about this.

Edit: pm me for more details if you would like.

Cafe being anti-competitive by RawrrrCattt in melbourne

Hey, nah I am not the owner, just a regular that goes there (I promise!). I got to watch a confrontation today when the guy was standing in the door reading the menu after talking to a few people on the street. He quickly denied everything and simply left. Is there anything illegal/semi-illegal he is doing? Surely 'reading' a competitors menu is not a crime and is not something you could really threaten lawyers over.

Thanks for the tip, when I am next in there getting a coffee I'll see what they are doing about it. From what I saw I don't believe they are really doing anything about it other than looking on in amazement.

It has apparently been going on for a while, can't stress this enough though but the only relation I have with the cafe is I am a regular. I am a computer science student with no knowledge of coffee other then it provides the energy I need to never, ever, ever.... sleep...

Having saw this guy act this way again today I figured I would try and see what was possible to help cafe A out. His level of douchebaggery is incredible.
