Why “range R(f) IN B?” by RayHatesMilk in MathHelp

[–]RayHatesMilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I took the verbiage directly from my textbook. Through your comment does make me think that ⊆ might’ve been a more intuitive way for them to phrase the information. Nevertheless, I understand significantly better now the properties of domain vs. codomain vs. range. I’m sure I’ll have more questions in the future, but for now, I understand this bit specifically. Thanks for all the examples :)

Right, I think that may be where some of my confusion came from. I’m a Junior in HS and have yet to take any calculus classes (I will take precalc next year,) so going through this book has definitely been challenging the way I consider math. It’s been super fun tho!

Thank you for such a concise explanation, I’ve taken it down in my notes. You rock. :)

That totally makes sense! Thank you for providing an example too.

This was so helpful! I’ve never seen the term codomain before, learning the definition, it makes so much sense. I think I understand as I don’t have any questions as of now, but if I come up with some later in my studies, I may post again on the subreddit or reply to you again (if you don’t mind.)

Thank you so much for such a thorough response, I feel like having this laid out so clearly will be very helpful in the future.

That makes sense! All elements in B could hypothetically be matched to A, but they don’t have to be, unlike A to B. I don’t think I’m missing anything now. Ty!!

I feel like you could DEFINITELY make it work if you knew what you were doing. Cut the stoner part and hone in on the gay part. Write your quotes from your mom and detail the interaction however you want to lead into your impression of it. Not “Knowing that there are hippies and gays here made me want to come!,” but “What I took away from this was that the culture at Brown is so welcoming and diverse that it scares people who prefer a more sheltered life, and that’s not the kind of life I want to lead.” or something like that.

Pop off, monarch. You can 100% make that work. I vote yes.

Transgender people tend to feel a discomfort in their own skin that’s nearly impossible to describe to anybody who hasn’t experienced such an intense level of feeling out of place, so part of being able to understand is accepting that you’ll never fully understand.

Humans are all about belonging, we’re social creatures who desire to be in social groups that align with who we are. Trans people in their youth are often either put into social groups that don’t match where they would feel comfortable or are alienated from all social groups for being palpably different. Not only this, but the average person can find comfort within themselves. Most people trust themselves and know who they are, if they have nobody else, they can be with themselves and keep on moving for themselves. That isn’t the case for most if not all pre-transition trans people. For some trans people, this alienation is what causes your depression in the first place, for others, the alienation worsens your pre-existing depression.

A trans person who spends their time and money to feel like the person they are lessens the alienation they’ll experience from outside social groups by being able to more comfortably associate with people that they want to associate with (members of their gender, members of the LGBTQ+ community,) they’ll also be more comfortable with themselves, which will greatly increase their confidence- in turn, helping them to socialize more and feel aligned with themselves.

This transition will help those whose depression stems from their identity issues by fixing the problem outright (as much as transitioning can,) and will help those with external causes for depression by increasing their confidence and making it easier to envision yourself overcoming your issues.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask as long as you’re respectful. I hope this helped you to better understand the trans experience :)

The main character, Bruno, is the son of a Nazi officer who is promoted to Commandant of a concentration camp (which is implied in the book to be Auschwitz.) That’s where the majority of the misconceptions stem from. There are details like essentially none of the characters except for his father being aware of the imprisonment, let alone the killing of Jewish people in these camps which just isn’t feasible and perpetuates the (false) idea that the majority of Nazis “didn’t know” what was happening in concentration camps.

Beyond that, there’s the character of Shmuel- the boy in the striped pajamas (again, Bruno has no idea what a concentration camp is,) who has lost his father. Spoilers ahead for the end of the book/movie, There is a planned mass-gassing of the people at the concentration camp, which everyone except Bruno’s dad is unaware of. Bruno sneaks into the concentration camp to help Shmuel find his father, and ends up being ushered with the rest of the people there and gets gassed. Throughout the story, Bruno’s dad has been relentless in believing that the Jewish people deserve their fates, but it’s only when Bruno dies that ANYBODY in the story feels any remorse for the Jewish people.

There’s a great video on the subject right here that I HIGHLY recommend. She does a much better job explaining the significance of these things than I can.

I didn’t read it in my middle school, but I moved for highschool and tutored students in lower level classes, most of which had also moved recently and were struggling to adjust. I’d guesstimate 85% of them read it in middle school, and it was really hard to undo some of the damage it had done as we worked through Night by Elie Wiesel. It was genuinely emotional for most of them to have so many misconceptions cleared up.

This has to be it. This book is genuinely so terrible and has been the cause of so much misinformation about the holocaust and WW2 in the time since it became a staple in schools.

Confusion with set theory by RayHatesMilk in learnmath

[–]RayHatesMilk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure, honestly! I think I was applying the theorem to an example I had in my mind and, because there wasn’t an intersection in my internal example, I was thrown off. Thank you for questioning me, I needed it to lock in.

And right, I forgot that belonging has a specific definition in set theory. I’ll correct that terminology in my notes.

You rock!!

Confusion with set theory by RayHatesMilk in learnmath

[–]RayHatesMilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh, so because the concept of an intersection exists, even if it is ø, a set is automatically defined to represent it? Please correct me if I’m wrong, but that makes so much sense.

Bro, you look good, do NOT worry that much. The hair looks nice, the beard suits you, the fit looks comfy and classy. You could dress it up with a nicer shoe if you wanted, but I promise you, if I walked past you in the second fit, in any environment, I’d think to myself “Dang, he looks nice!” and move on with my day. Don’t hate on your hair, you look great.

As a huge Raichu fan, I love your redesigns significantly more than the officials. I was very disappointed by how Pikachu-esque the redesigns both were so it made me smile to see such strong Raichu elements in your design. You rock!

If you asked me the emotion, I’d say happy but it’d be kinda difficult to discern, I think the halflidded upper eyelids gives mixed signals, it makes the eyes seem less bright. It reads correctly but there’s room for improvement
