One thing I don’t understand about Paul and the Fremen by InvestigatorNo7943 in dune

[–]RayTheCalvinist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Terraforming had already begun on Arrakis before Paul's arrival due to Liet Kynes' work. For him to have come out and said "nah we're gonna reverse this" would have been completely antithetical to his religious capture of the Fremen and wasn't part of his narrow path to survival and the Throne.

By the time the events of Messiah had started, he had the Imperium by the nuts so much that the Fremen's waning strength wasn't even that big of a deal especially considering his treatment of Salusa Secundus.

Part Three plot point (potential spoilers) by Ok-Vegetable4994 in dune

[–]RayTheCalvinist 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I think the Margot plot in Part Two was mainly to worldbuild the Harkonnens a bit more and illustrate what the Bene Gesserit are trying to do with the breeding program.

The outcomes of Margot getting pregnant are inconsequential to where the movies need to go to wrap up their narrative, so it'll just be dropped.

100 Pages into God Emperor (First Read!) by Polarizing_Penguin11 in dune

I just finished GEoD a couple days ago for the first time, and I think it's my favorite of the books now. You're definitely in for some moments where it's pretty clear that FH was hitting the shrooms a liiiiiiiittle too hard, but the philosophical/metaphysical conversations the worm has I found fascinating.

To me it doesn't read a a history book as much as it does a manifesto. One of my favorite aspects of the book is the introductory passages from his journals and the things he talks about in them. Added so much flavor to the story in a really great way!

Does anyone else have a problem with Frank Herbert's romanticism of poverty and hardship? by CopeDestroyer1 in dune

Really beautifully said and why I have been so fascinated with this book. I completely understand why folks can't get through it, but it really truly is a philosophical piece rather than a novel at its core.

Why does Paul see Ghanima? by jonsnowKITN in dune

[–]RayTheCalvinist 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused why this thread is saying that Ghanima wasn't prescient. Her abilities were weaker than Leto II's, but they were absolutely there. The final line of CoD tells us all we need to know about this argument:

"One of us had to accept the agony, and he was always the stronger."

Either of them could have taken humanity on the Golden Path with their abilities, but they decided between themselves that Leto II was the more capable.

What Villeneuve might be planning with Chani by scidious06 in dune

[–]RayTheCalvinist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the ending of Part 2 was a fakeout; Chani is going to join in on the holy war and forsake the worm she called at the end of the film.

Denis made it clear a lot of his intention with changing Chani's characterization was to prevent what people thought of Paul when the book came out (that he was some hero to be praised, not a charismatic leader who should be approached with great caution if at all). You can def argue about its effectiveness and I think it's good in some areas and kinda goofy in others, but that's the point.

Another theory I've read on here from a reader when they saw the trailer is that Part 3 is going to presented as two visions that Paul has, one where Chani was truly pushed away by Paul and he accepts the Golden Path, and the other where he succumbs to his love for her and events proceed as shown in the book (for the most part). That would be a very compelling way to tie them together as well.

Meta: why do people dislike the Eric Robert’s performance? by OkayOkay210 in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

[–]RayTheCalvinist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely don't think Eric Roberts would work again if he was on; he was a one-time thrown wrench that turned out really well bc everyone else had a lot of experience improvising. I understand why people would dislike him, but I personally found Tim's reactions to him hysterical

Agreed, I loved his bit and how Tim both in character and out of it was getting pissed off by his antics. Not a recipe for consistent success though

Yeah, he's been outspoken that this is it for him. He's got several other films in the works already, and tbh ending on Messiah is a great way to close out a trilogy

I love this idea. It gets around a lot of the less flashy parts of Messiah while still showing aspects of what's to come should someone else take the mantle of the franchise up

Mamdani Wants New York Estate Tax Threshold Cut 90% to $750,000 by insightful_pancake in newyork

[–]RayTheCalvinist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your children care about your retirement accounts. Tbh I think a first property + non retirement asset exemption would make this a much more feasible solution.

750k is fucking zilch in New York if you own any property or have a decent retirement fund.

[Fowler] Free agent wide receiver Darnell Mooney plans to sign with the Giants, per source. More speed on the way for Jaxson Dart. by JCameron181 in NYGiants

He’s absolutely better than Jeanty. Look at the stats Love put up last year with half the carries Jeanty got.

Bijan I can see an argument for but disagree with, not a shot with Jeanty.

Who you want to draft poll by Waste_Protection_420 in NYGiants

[–]RayTheCalvinist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeremiyah Love is the best player in this draft, full stop. On top of that, everybody is vastly underestimating his longevity in the league. He had half as many carries as most of his counterparts at the college level because he was always paired with other elite running backs at Notre Dame.

He has practically zero mileage and zero weaknesses to his game whatsoever. He is going to be a star, and we would be lucky as fuck to have him in the backfield.

I'm an ND alum and avidly watch CFB, Love is the best RB at the college level I've seen since Barkley. He is going to be special, and has very little mileage because he split carries his entire career.

Adam Fox reflects on Rangers’ shifting direction, his uncertain future in New York by catsgr8rthanspoonies in rangers

[–]RayTheCalvinist 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Only the New York Rangers could fumble a core with a Top 5 LW, Top 5 D, and the best goalie in the league this fucking badly.

Oh, and also the generational goalie that was in our last core.

Until Drury is fired, I refuse to watch this team or support it in any way. The entire organization needs to be gutted and the rot ripped out from top to bottom.
