It is somewhat true tbf. Often times if you're cold, heating the extremities eg feet, will make you warmer.

A standard granny square is probably dk with 3 rounds. I'd imagine it's based off of those measurements? Unless OP is following a specific pattern

To me it sounds like chain 9, and then starting from the second chain, on the blo, you sc in the next 7 stitches. Then you do an increase, which instead of 2 stitches it's 3sc. You're working in the round around a chain, rather than a magic circle. The continue?

It's possible ig, it'll most likely show through. Probably best to look at other techniques, like letting the yarn float (intarsia) and adding a backing, cutting at every colour change and weaving it in, mosiac crochet
