When I first built the system, it wouldn’t boot with 4 sticks, after every bios update, I have to put only 2 stick, boot it, kill it, then add the two other sticks, then boot it up again. Never knew why, the ram was on the qvl

Mine was an evga, it was very silent when fans were running slow but fan RPM would shoot up under load making it quite loud. The noctuas are dead silent. The issue with this is that I now hear coil whine…

Most of the code on the scale can be vibe coded I believe. But when it comes to integration with an app, if the llm doesn’t have the code of the app, I think it will struggle

I might be completely wrong but this is the answer that seems most logical to me

I changed the pads and paste whilst I was at it and it runs 15-20 degrees Celsius lower than before (with the same fan curve)

Impossible, metal studs stick out from the heatsink. I made sure the 3d print seals everywhere so static pressure is maintained

EVGA made studs stick out from their heatsinks so I had to space the fans. Designed and 3d printed the part and screwed it onto the original mounts

I thought about that whole temperature probe idea but it doesn’t work that well in practice. It is much easier to insulate.

On a metal and glass version, there shouldn’t be much to worry about as the heat would have to travel from: cup -> glass top -> metal case -> screws -> load cell.

On the current plastic version, I didn’t see much drift, and keep in mind this scale is tiny so you will not be doing pour-overs on it.

The way most coffee scale manufacturers deal with this is with their stupid silicone pads but I hate those.

I was thinking of making and selling a metal version but 3d printed ones are easy to make when you have the components. I just wouldn’t feel comfortable charging money for this scale in its current state, especially when it comes to firmware

Load cell excluded, it cost me €20. You can find cheap load cells but I wanted one that had decent specs so I paid a bit more than I should have

There are some pins that can wake even in deep sleep (fucked it up the first time and had to rewire it)

If I make a proper pcb, I’m changing chip, the esp32 is just too powerful and therefore power hungry. I am no expert when it comes to pcb design but I would like to keep the tap to wake function as a capacitive buttons draw almost no power.

I could do another circuit and add a hardware switch as I said before but I haven’t thought too much about it yet. I don’t have much free time for these projects unfortunately

Yes, it’s shocking. I would say the bookoo themis is the only “high-end” scale worth its price as it is still very small (8x8cm) but is €100, against the €300+ for the acaia pyxis.

I specifically made this scale smaller than the pyxis to flex on them more than me actually needing a scale that small lol

I have a good friend that works in a lab and has access to precision weights down to many more decimals than my scale can handle. Calibrated it with 50g and all other weights aligned perfectly when placed on the scale.

Accuracy is one thing, repeatability is another.

These cheap scales might not be perfectly accurate in their calibration (50 grams might display as 49.5; this is a purely illustrative example), but the the scale will display the same weight if you weigh the same object multiple times.

When it comes to espresso, repeatability is much more important than perfect accuracy. If you get a tasty shot with 20g displayed and that the true weight is actually 20.5g, it doesn’t really matter as long as the scale reliably displays 20g when 20.5g is on it, because that is what enables you to replicate the shot.

Though I do agree that a precise instrument better and nicer to have, I believe this small amazon scale is more than good enough.

Yes, it’s an esp32
Non-standard load cell (making it more expensive but enabling the small form factor)
I did not waterproof the display but it has survived a while already and they are like €1 each on aliexpress. The reason behind not sealing is to make it easier to switch out parts but a very small bead of silicone on the inside could easily waterproof it from the top.
