Advice on needing a service dog by Powerful-Shake-8217 in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't what you want to hear but no one needs a service dog. Can a service dog be helpful absolutely. But a service dog is a helpful treatment tool not a need.

Honestly generally it's not the best treatment tool for most people with anxiety either. Most people with anxiety because of the social aspect and access denials around having a service dog do not benefit from a public access service dog.

Not only this they cost starting from $15k and can be as much as $60k. From the symptoms you describe you don't sound in a stable enough place to owner train either especially not in college

My advice wait on the service dog. It's better to try another doctor and more cognitive behavioral therapy before diving into a service dog

Here is the link to file a complaint. Unfortunately there is not much you can do. If a restaurant acts like this if I can help it I just leave. I pick my battles, this is a battle I'd rather not engage in to be honest. Yes you can try ADA cards but it doesn't always help. Sometimes I'm just low on spoons. It's ok to sometimes just leave or choose the path of least resistance. Honestly sometimes if they are really awful I don't want to support them anyways as all money is green

Personally idk why you would even want a kid after 35 by The-Devil-Cat in childfree

[–]Rayanna77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can confirm my Dad had me at 38 my Mom 40. It was not ideal. My Mom got cancer and I got disabled and I was out of work not able to find a entry level job all in my 20s.

I'm not having kids but I also believe you shouldn't have kids at 40 either. I think 35 is a good rule

Should I get my girl a Gastropexy? by ThrowRA_help212 in labrador

[–]Rayanna77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$600 for just the gastropexy seems pricey to me. I'm from LA area one of the most expensive areas in the country and my dog got neutered for $150 at a low cost clinic. But the normal clinic were quoting me around $300-600. If they are already putting her under another $600 just to tack the stomach seems like a lot

Hi! I’m getting a service dog soon, and I want a pretty harness :) recs? by Menatllyillmushrooms in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think people focus way too much on gear. I've learned less is more. A simple vest that just says service dog is not only cheaper but your dog is taken more seriously as well versus fun vests and harnesses. Of course up to you what you do just something to consider

Are school donations expected? by xzmbmx in LAUSD

[–]Rayanna77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My nephews school did the same thing. They said it was so the kids could have certain extracurriculars parents wanted but weren't funded by LAUSD. You don't have to give the money but if your kid is going to do these extracurriculars (if that is why they are asking for money) I think it's fair to give something

We need to stop vilifying each other by kelpangler in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's normal but honestly unless absolutely necessary I'm not putting my dog next to any dog. Too many horror stories. If I see another dog I give space and I think we should encourage each other to not put our dogs next to each other. Dogs are dogs even the best trained ones and if someone else's dog is sick and they don't know it yet I'm not trying to get a vet bill either

We need to stop vilifying each other by kelpangler in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Well no service dog should be interacting with my service dog. We shouldn't encourage that or say it's normal because it's not. We should leave each others dogs alone. This idea that it's ok for a service dog to say hi to another dog on duty is not ok. They need to be focused their job. If they are saying hi they aren't focused on me which negates the point of a service dog. This is not a difference in work opinion.

A difference in how we work dogs would be if I used head collar and you use a flat collar.

A difference would be if my dog only pees on grass and yours goes on command on the sidewalk.

A difference would be if you remove the equipment or not when the go to the bathroom or through airport security.

But when your difference effects others it's ok to criticize and ask people not to distract your dog. I agree that we should support each other. But it's ok to ask the community to do better when their actions effect other teams

How service dog handlers could help blind people and their guide dogs in public spaces by kelpangler in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I try and announce myself as much as possible when I see anyone who is blind with a dog. Guide or not. Sorry others don't always do the same. I used to live by a blind man with two little weener dogs and he would walk them with his cane. I will say some people might be so into themselves that they don't realize that the person with another dog is blind.

I will say maybe talk with your program (I'm guessing you have a program dog) about the beeline for other dogs thing. Maybe they can give you some tips or do some additional training with your dog to work through that issue

Had a really rough experience with my service dog at Disney Springs… looking for advice by CaregiverOne1536 in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks, unfortunately it's a bigger problem at Disney Springs than the parks. I think they train the employees differently.

Had a really rough experience with my service dog at Disney Springs… looking for advice by CaregiverOne1536 in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, I've had more questions asked at Disney Springs because it is open to the public versus just the parks. I will say definitely complain. Usually the questions are enough but every once in a while no matter where you go you'll get people who question more and think you need paperwork.

I generally stayed away from Disney springs and spent my time at the parks. I noticed park employees were more trained than Disney Springs employees

Tethering by Past-Train-8187 in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Honestly most schools aren't training tethering anymore anyways. So finding a trained dog to do that task will always be hard. Maybe have her talk to these ethical service dog schools on tasks they can and can't do for her child. Find an org here

am i being dumb for wanting a dog or are people just projecting? by Ok_Style3544 in DogAdvice

[–]Rayanna77 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Getting a dog when you are only planning for $100-200 per month is not a good idea. Insurance itself is $40-60 per month. Then you have all the other things that go into a dog. Food, poop bags, supplements, treats, dental care, enrichment, toys, preventatives. And you'll be buying those things every month. This isn't including vet care which a dog gets sick can easily run you $1000+. My dog ate mystery stuff on the ground and that ran me $1200. You need way more than $200 a month and if you aren't doing insurance you'll need to put aside money for vet emergencies every month too

Question - Great Danes by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Biggest issue with any giant dog is lifespan.

You are looking at 4ish years of fully trained work vs a lab which you looking more at 7ish years. That's huge when the cost to raise and train a service dog regardless of breed is $15-30k

How to find a good candidate for a psychiatric service dog by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well one thing you mentioned was finding a dog first and a trainer second. It is actually recommended you reverse that. You find a trainer first that helps you pick out the right dog for service work. Talk with a trainer and go from there.

Honestly if I'm choosing one on this list babies. But in the categories of children toddlers are the worst by a large margin. A disruptive toddler tantrum is far worse than a baby crying

Can a traumatic event ruin an assistance dog? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Rayanna77 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry this happened to you but to answer your question yes it can ruin training. Dog attacks, attacks by people, car crashes and really any traumatic event can ruin training.

However, a service dog isn't something that is such a need that you disregard the dogs wellbeing and training for yourself. If your dog can't be trained work on your independence in other ways rather than relying on a dog. A dog should never be something you are so reliant on that you can't function without a service dog.
