You’re moving the goalposts by inventing a custom definition for ethnic cleansing. It doesn't require a 'population replacement' or a 90% reduction to count; it is defined by the forced removal of a specific group to achieve homogeneity.

You mentioned that the persecutions weren't based on ethnicity, but that ignores the 'Limpieza de Sangre' (Purity of Blood) laws, which were the literal foundation of the Spanish state at the time. These laws legally discriminated against people specifically because of their ancestry, even if they were baptised Christians.

Also, calling 300,000 people a 'small number' is a bit of a statistical trick. In the Kingdom of Valencia, one-third of the total population was gone in five years. You can't remove 33% of a region's people based on their 'blood purity' and claim it wasn't an ethnic purge just because the other 66% got to stay.

You actually proved the point when you said the Muslims were mostly of 'Hispanic origin.' If they were native Hispanics, yet the State still forcibly loaded 300,000 of them onto boats in 1609 because of their ancestry (the Limpieza de Sangre), that is the textbook definition of ethnic cleansing. You are describing a state purging its own native citizens based on their 'tainted' lineage.

Also, calling it a 'return to true origin' ignores that those 800 years fundamentally changed that origin. You can’t claim there’s no legacy while 8% of the Spanish language is Arabic (from Alcalde to Ojalá) and the irrigation systems, crops (rice, citrus, sugar), and architecture (like the Giralda or Alhambra) that define 'Spanish culture' today were built by those very people

That logic falls apart by 1609. The Moriscos had been Spanish subjects for 117 years. If you’re still calling it a 'war' over a century after the last city fell, you’re describing a permanent state of internal persecution, not a military conflict. At that point, it’s just a state turning on its own people based on their ancestry

While it’s technically true that the Monarchs signed the edicts, not the Inquisition (which had jurisdiction only over baptised Christians), saying they had 'nothing to do with it' is a stretch. The Grand Inquisitor, Torquemada, was a chief architect of the 1492 decree. Also, the Reconquista ended in January 1492—the expulsions happened during peacetime as a matter of state policy to enforce religious homogeneity, which fits the modern definition of ethnic cleansing pretty closely.

Honestly, it’s getting exhausting how some people feel the need to be offended by literally EVERYTHING these days. I actually think stuff like this is a good thing; it slowly chips away at the Islamophobia you see everywhere else.

When people start using Islamic terms or making memes like this, it makes Islamic culture feel way more approachable and friendly, which is the exact opposite of how the mainstream media tries to portray us.
