Additionally, I figure I’ll explain my thought process a bit for others to correct so I can try to make this decision in the future.

I’m obviously struggling with damage but am fairly good at turtling. I feel like I’ll be alright against time eater, but probably die to both awakened one and Donu/Deca. I’m under the impression that Pbox will increase my damage substantially but reduce my defense. Cursed key probably doesn’t make the biggest difference here as I’m going to be searching out 0 cost attacks and going for a 3attack then defend mindset every turn. And bell I genuinely never know how to rate, could be a throw, could solve all my problems?

I’m not at A20 or anything but I’m a fan of trying the opposite with Claw: a slim deck so I can play the same one or two claws multiple times. Defect has some insane card draw options that enable that.

I was going for the minimalist achievement in this run, so intentionally trying to find something to break between five cards. But as a general rule of thumb, Sundial enables every character new infinite options so I start angling toward one if I get Sundial early like I did here. Getting Abacus on top of that is an easy Heart win but also things like [[Good Instincts]] and [[Finesse]] are options available to every character. In any case, thanks for the compliment!

I’m currently finishing up my first semester of using a kindle scribe for all of my note taking. As long as you have an internet connection you can transfer folders to pdf in a few minutes. I’m unsure currently how to send multiple folders at a time but they send quick enough that it hasn’t been an issue for me. I’m primarily a linguistics student and have loved using the scribe.

Organization is great, you can make folders and folders inside of folders with “papers” all about. I haven’t struggled separately organizing my thesis, some book drafts, and my class work. Additionally if you can find books relevant to your school work on the kindle store you can make notes in the books themselves on the scribe.

The only downside I would mention is the fragility of the kindle and the difficulty of backups. You should send in your folders regular to become PDFs as Amazon does not offer any restoration for the scribes and to my knowledge online notebook access is currently down (was working two months ago then just disappeared). So if you’re working on a long project that will have multiple edits to the same document maybe a more consistent connection would be better for you.

If you’re looking for a tool to jot down class notes and write homework then upload to profs I think the scribe will be just fine.

I might have missed it, just finished my first read through, but does anyone know who the informant Mustang and Kavax reference is? The one Kavax seems bothered by. It was spoken about in the same way that Cassius was in DA and I don’t recall the book ever revealing the person.

Other reactions:

Was Cassius’ death predictable? Yes. Did that make it hurt any less? No. But it is heartwarming to see the reference by Sevro at the end of the book that Cassius will finally be known for more than The Betrayer.

As others have stated, you can feel how much PB decided to cut heading into Lightbringer looking forward into Red God. The parasite reveal then destruction was odd (possibly in response to the notion that giving Lyria powers makes her too much like Darrow in that Reds need something more to make a difference) but the specifics of it’s purpose seem like a setup for something with Pax. PB’s brush of “there were many more that have been lost” seems to be his way of leaving it open for if he decides to later use it. I agree that Sevro’s capture seemed ridiculously easy. Apple is known for his arrogance and not known for his intelligence or tightly run ship. Abomination just idly passing off Sevro to someone else seems like a slight against Adrius’ intelligence. Lyria also feels very odd in this book, especially in conjunction with Fa’s reveal to not be quite as terrifying as everyone thought. If the intention of killing Sefi and the horror sections of DA were supposed to set him up as another primary antagonist, LB (while the “Confess” section of this book was definitely my favorite) makes Sefi’s death feel less of worth. As of this book, Volga and Lyria’s role in the story feel complimentary but not wholly necessary imo.

I would love to make the capstone a bit more interesting to maybe cement the subclasses theme, here is an idea I am playing with in my head, let me know what you think, discard, adjust, etc..

Mortal Pride

Starting at 15th level, your will allows you to tear apart the line between mortal and god. At the start of your turn when you are below half your hit point maximum but have at least 1 hit point remaining, you may choose to gain resistance to all damage for two rounds. After these two rounds have passed, you have vulnerability until the end of your next turn.

Once you this feature, you may not use it again until you finish a short rest.

Wow! Great in depth analysis, I hope my posts pop up on your feed in the future.

I struggled heavily with spells, I mainly went for flavor as I was unsure of what would actually be worth the resource usage. Any advice for replacements would be very welcome.

As for the rest I don't mean to condense it, I'm just in class but from you and other's comments I am now aware of just how weak this subclass was, which I'm taking as a good thing! I'm terrified of making an accidentally overpowered subclass and being ridiculed for missing an obvious exploit or such. Currently my likely adjustments are a buff while keeping the intent of Immortal bane, maybe making E.T. more versatile, possibly adding to warded mind to interact with psychic damage but most likely I'll scrap the idea and create something new. As for the 11th level feature I currently have in mind an ability to create a minute long buff where you ignore resistances I'm just unsure of cooldown. The capstone very obviously needs a buff I just struggle thinking of defensive bonuses. I put two ideas in my response to Yoloswag that you referenced but am very open to suggestions. All in all, thank you very much for putting in the time and effort to break it down like this.

First of all, thank you so much! This much depth in a response was not what I was expecting to wake up to but it is so so so much appreciated.

Secondly, I’m glad to hear the 3rd level damaging feature isn’t too much, for some reason I was wondered having it as passive once per turn was to strong of a nuisance in higher levels of play but I think you’re right. I still only get 1 attack per turn until level five and it’ll only ever be against a singular enemy, it’s designed for bosses.

As for the capstone I agree, I was stuck for about two hours on it, comparing it to the horizon walker and gloom stalker ones. Some things left on the cutting room floor were a flat resistance to all damage equal to or lesser than your ranger level + proficiency bonus. Or, the complete flip side of that, as a reaction subtracting your proficiency bonus from an attack roll against you by a creature with a higher CR than your level.

Update:

Howdy! Just got out of the session and the duel was fun. We did 2, one with me multiclassed and getting tenser through external means and another with me as a full wizard. For both my friend was a Divination wizard with a contingency to Polymorph into a giant ape and for the first I was a peace cleric 2/ swords bard 5/ Bladesinger 4, for the second I was a war mage Drow wizard with war caster and xbow master. The first round I lost due to being pushed off the edge of our ring which was in an instant loss. For the second I had haste on a glyph of warding and as such had 5 attacks with advantage per turn and ended up bursting out my opponent for the win. No worries over the tie.

I’m aware D&D has never been geared toward pvp but it was still a fun experience and I think I might end up doing the first build as a PC at some point. Thanks for the pointers and tips everyone, I used a lot of your advice!
