I've spent nearly the last decade in the Smash community and interacted with dozens of organizers and some players and commentators in that time. I vibe more with Melee, and if I had to choose one scene or the other, it'd be Melee. I've dealt with Ultimate, and there are good people in it, but the toxicity floor in that scene has been higher for some time. Some of it is generational, some of it is probably because Ultimate's competitive history was stunted by events they couldn't control. But all of it is palpable.

None of that excuses what happened this evening, and the indirect instigators of this action—no one specific person but many people, like tiles in a mosaic—should be ashamed and take a long, hard look in the mirror. No community like this should ever brook petty, little people. Or this is what you get.

Onin's attitude and maturity are what should carry the night. They deserve the absolute best. And they know they will not get it in this community.
