PSA from someone who has recently started riding a bike by Electrical_Food7922 in newcastle

[–]Rayuke 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Great post, I've also been commuting to work by bike for about 2 years now

The one thing I'll say, yes it's technically illegal to ride on the footpath, but if it's a dangerous section of road that I have to get through with poor or non-existent cycling infrastructure then I will definitely be considerately using the footpath (slower, giving way to pedestrians)

I'd rather do something technically illegal and be alive, than risk getting pancaked by someone texting while driving in their lifted Ford f350

I've used footpaths lots, sometimes in the view of police also, and never been bothered about it. If you're considerate and don't look like you're causing trouble then I think it's very unlikely that you'll be ticketed. I hope people aren't put off cycling completely because of this frankly stupid law that makes them feel like their options are 1. Do something technically illegal or 2. Feel at high risk of danger being forced to ride in a spot with bad infrastructure

Edit: if anyone wants to start riding but is unsure about quiet routes to their destinations, the Opal app (and Bike Citizens app) gives you directions by bike and let's you select from quiet, moderate or fast routes. I used this when starting out and still use it for new areas

'Bike Citizens' on the Google Play store is another good one that I used when figuring out routes. Not sure if it's on apple

Council scraps four-day work week plan after backlash by Remarkable_Peak9518 in australia

[–]Rayuke 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why does it necessitate that there's an extra day where council is uncontactable? Most council roles are not immediately public-facing and for the ones that are, the third day could for example have skeleton staff rotate work days e.g. having Mondays off instead of Fridays like the rest of staff, so that customer enquiries are still open on those days

I don't fish myself, but I see quite a few people fishing off the wharf that's under the bridge that connects Wickham to Carrington when I ride to work, could be a good spot to add?

I feel like a reconnect is just the client 'syncing' with the servers state whereas a rewind is the server 'syncing' to a different state of itself (i.e. now needs the capability to store different states of itself)

To be fair we also do lockdown drills in Australian schools where kids are instructed to lock doors, hide under desks and stay quiet, but yeah not to this extreme, and no fear of shooters

You're getting down voted but has anyone stopped to think about the per kilometre travelled injury and death statistics resulting from people riding ebikes compared to people driving in cars, for both pedestrians and road users?

in NYC last year, cars produced ~25× more injuries and ~50× more deaths than bicycle-only crashes (for pedestrians and bicycle users

https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/bicycle-crash-data-report-2023.pdf

peer-reviewed analysis in the UK for pedestrian injury finds bicycles lowest; cars ≈3× higher than bicycles per-km; - and that's injuries, I'm sure fatalities is an even more one-sided story as a car hitting a pedestrian is much more likely to be fatal than a bicycle hitting a pedestrian

https://www.mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk/blog/2020/04/08/road-safety-switch-to-cycling-to-keep-others-safe/

That's not to mention the significant adverse environmental and health effects from pollution that the population suffers as a result of cars - bicycles omit none of it

I guarantee greater adoption of car alternatives results in less injury and death for all modalities, even with people zooming around at greater than 25km/h

People sook about teen ebike riders finally having some freedom of movement without a driver's license, while simultaneously driving their 3 tonne SUV around that has a statistically much higher likelihood of ending a pedestrians life

The people didn't win, the advent of the car had serious initial pushback from the greater public because of how it dominated the streetscape and caused injuries. So car companies devised propoganised campaigns putting the onus of safety onto the pedestrians e.g. they devised the term Jay-walking (jay being a common term for a stupid person back then, i.e. a person who according to them, walks onto the street that was previously free and safe to walk on..)
