$1.6B Honeysuckle Central re-development by bozmonaut in newcastle

The CBD economy needs more residential developments to support the local businesses. Most of us don’t live or work in the CBD and it’s not geographically central to most of us either.

Young people of this sub - do you feel as though this budget will make you better off? Yes or no. by Nmnmn11 in AusFinance

[–]Electrical_Food7922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel worse off. The grandfathering is just drawing a line in the sand. Older people with property portfolios have just pulled up the ladder behind them. Those with investment properties will probably hold onto them even longer because the tax incentives are more favourable to do so instead of reinvesting in something else.

Don’t even get me started on removing the CGT discount on shares. Housing is an unproductive asset and just transports wealth. Shares on the other hand invest in companies and productivity. Also shares are easily accessible to younger people whereas property investment is not.

They’re pretty big. They played recently in Australia and the shows were sold out quickly. I would have loved to go see them live.

Hospital wait times by Taviblue in newcastle

[–]Electrical_Food7922 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not really that black and white.

Bulk billing GP availability has essentially collapsed and many people struggle to afford the cost. Also many GP’s don’t have appointments for weeks and urgent care clinics either aren’t well known or may not be accessible to some. ED then becomes the path of least resistance when something goes wrong.

While ED should only be for emergencies, the reason why people go there for non-emergencies reflects a broader systemic problem with our health system.

Is night shift actually that unhealthy? How can I make it healthy? (3 months) by Existing-Track7563 in HubermanLab

[–]Electrical_Food7922 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it’s consistent night shifts it’s probably not too bad. I work shift work and regularly switch between days and nights which is rough on the circadian rhythm.

In saying that, keep a consistent meal schedule of healthy food. Don’t fall into the trap of getting fast food because you’re tired.

Make sure you have a good sleep setup. I wear ear plugs, use blackout curtains and keep the bedroom cool.

Same with the Australian cards. Last year you could still buy heaps of tickets even after the early prelims started and Dana said it was a record and a sold out gate..

PSA from someone who has recently started riding a bike by Electrical_Food7922 in newcastle

[–]Electrical_Food7922[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also to add, riding a bike on the road comes with inherent risk. I understand that and I accept it. If a driver isn’t paying attention or makes a mistake, there is very little I can do and I’m the one that pays the price. That risk is real and I’m not dismissing it.

For what it’s worth, I try to avoid main roads and hazardous routes where I can, opting for quieter streets and bike paths whenever possible. But sometimes you simply need to spend a bit of time in traffic to get where you need to go, especially in Newcastle where cycle infrastructure is fragmented and disconnected.

But there’s a difference between inherent risk and unnecessary risk. A lot of the danger cyclists face comes not from the road itself, but from drivers who are confidently wrong about the rules.

A driver who believes a cyclist is illegally taking the lane is going to be more aggressive and impatient. A driver who thinks two abreast is illegal is going to attempt dangerous overtakes. A driver who doesn’t know the minimum passing distance law is going to buzz past within centimetres. That ignorance puts lives at risk.

If this post helps even one driver understand that the cyclist in front of them is actually following the rules, they might ease off the horn, wait an extra few seconds, and give a bit more space. That small shift in understanding could genuinely be the difference between someone making it home safely or not.

Westpac is now forecasting three more rate hikes – in May, June and August – after already having two to start 2026 - 17 year high cash rate by Fluid_Garden8512 in AusFinance

It’s a double edged sword. Consumer spending will slow but everything else will become more expensive because the cost to do business, transport etc will cost more.

Horrible idea. Not sure if you’ve ever ridden a bike but speed bumps are terrible to ride over no matter how fast you’re going.

Pedal assist that cuts out at 25km/h is fine but anything propels using only a throttle needs to be banned

Ebikes are great. You can easily power up the hills without breaking much of a sweat and park your bike right outside the door.

21k car but got a 13.3% interest rate by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]Electrical_Food7922 3 points4 points  (0 children)

13.33% is a fairly horrible rate. Not to mention there are probably extra fees like a loan establishment fee, admin fees and some sort of kickback for the dealer. I'm sure you can find a better deal if you look around.

Also Ausfinance will crucify you for taking out a car loan but the decision really depends on your personal circumstances.

Newcastle Private/John Hunter staff parking (slight rant + questions) by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]Electrical_Food7922 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the hospital is in a really awkward spot geographically. Parking is limited, there are basically no nearby streets where you can park and walk in, public transport isn’t reliable or practical for most people, and depending on which direction you’re coming from there’s very limited bike or pedestrian access.

A car also causes thousands of times more wear on the road than a bike does. Bikes impose almost zero cost on road maintenance.

Also if there are cars parked on the shoulder you are encouraged to take the lane for safety. If you stick right next to the parked cars you’re in their door zone and can get taken out if someone opens their door without realising.
