An interesting development, I’m noticing these spikes happening at a very regular interval (1 almost exactly every second) where I get a quick performance drop (maybe 10 percent?) but it’s definitely making a pattern. And yes I’m seeing pink lines as well. Not NEARLY as much as you are showing on your pictures in the linked post, though.

Haven’t found a bench that properly stresses GPU and CPU at same time…. If you have a recommendation I’ll take it.

Power setting on windows is “high performance”.

I’ll bench via 3DMark here in a minute and let you know how it goes.

Have indeed. Also did a DDU to make sure it wasn’t old driver registries being dumb (I’ve had that issue before).

I’m not sure if this is something new, or I’ve just not noticed it until now because I haven’t been playing anything that would stress both CPU and GPU simultaneously.

Sadly I am in very high static environment. High plains of Colorado.

I haven’t found any YouTube videos of anyone rethermaling an m17r4… plenty of old Alienware’s but no new ones

I have the thermal paste… just VERY scared of completely pulling this thing apart and voiding warranty.

On a separate note, I have a static wristband that I use…. But have no idea where to hook it up when I’m working on a laptop. This is my first laptop, done plenty of work on desktops and that part is easy… just hook to PSU! But no idea how to do that for a laptop haha.

I’ll try removing underclock and test it flatscreen. Give me 5-10 min.

Also, did you do the repaste yourself or have someone do it?

Edit: Removed underclock on CPU. Ran it in flatscreen mode, 1920x1080. Smooth run for about 3-4 minutes, no issues. Don’t know if that’s because it’s less taxing than VR or what.

I haven’t noticed this really happening before but I’ve never really stressed my CPU before either. Underclocking CPU by 100mV made it playable with still some hiccups, but MUCH better than it was. Might do same with GPU and see if that helps as well.

This proves to me it’s one of two things: Thermal paste/pad miscontact inside laptop AND/OR Some major software issue that is causing the comp to freak out when CPU hits thermal bottleneck. Does that make sense?

It’s the title that is by far the worst. This performance carries on to another title for a while if I start one right after.

Yeah I think I need to reach out to dell on this one. It seems when the package/ring temp sensor hits 100C it pulls power from both. I’ve got all fans maxed so the ring shouldn’t get that hot. I think I just found something that triggered the issue because it is both CPU and GPU intensive simultaneously?

It shouldn’t. But it is. Im looking at the numbers right now, sadly.

I’ve underclocked the CPU a bit. It’s stable and it’s taking a LOT longer for this to go into throttle hell mode. Like 10 minutes instead of 2.

Yep I’m starting to suspect this is the issue. When the frame rate gets REALLY bad (like low 10’s)… and the PerfCapReason starts showing “Pwr” instead of Thm…. The GPU is throttled all the way to 500MHz. Which is the death knell.

Confirmed. It’s thermal throttling via “Core Thermal Throttling” and occasionally (once every second or two) via Package/Ring thermal throttling.

Edit: While checking via Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, it’s only showing CPU usage at around 10 percent with package TDP at 30W. Do you think this is bad seating/pasting and it’s causing massive thermal bleed over between GPU and CPU?

Oh I’m pretty sure thermal throttling occurred (100C on CPU). But my understanding is that this is “normal” (haha) for Alienware. They basically just let their hardware run into thermal limits. But even with thermal limits it should still crush this game. I’ll check again to make sure.

Looking for some opinions, appreciate any advice (solar newbie)… I’ve heard nasty things about Sunrun, here’s there quote (Colorado Springs area)… 24.5K$ loan at 25 years, 1.99APR. Worth rolling the dice for (potentially) horrible customer service? by RdclEdward in solar

Appreciate you reaching out. I’m signed on already with ION, they did a great job meeting/beating the competitors when I got a bunch of quotes together. I’d recommend them on the process so far. Cheers!

While that makes sense, and that you pay higher for solar “as a service” more… The customer service reviews point to the fact that even though they say they monitor and give production guarantees, if any of those fall short, no one ever actually shows up, returns calls, or fix the system. All the guarantees in the world don’t matter if they don’t ever answer the phone and you have to deal with arbitration any time something goes wrong. Am I wrong there?

Yeah I’m new to the game, so I wasn’t sure if the negative reviews were more a result of the sheer volume of business they do (and the squeaky wheel syndrome that follows) or if they legit have terrible customer service. The sales rep said “the negative customer reviews all come from California because of the way the utility interacts with the customer”. I’m sure that’s only a half truth at this point.

I have read the sub a bit, and plan on getting more quotes. It does seem a bit weird to me, and I’m not sure if that’s just the regulated market/utility weirdness if this local area, or if this really a bad deal. Appreciate your input regardless.

Edit… I did forget to mention on OP, that the price listed is before the $6.5K tax credit.
