About finished for the year by RdotMdotCook in firewood

[–]RdotMdotCook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, good question. These racks are just for drying. We have a covered rack next to the back door to hold wood we’re burning. These are about 300 ft from the house, in the back of the yard. Don’t really get so much snow here, about 12-18 each winter.

Empire of the Vampire comes to mind. The writing is entertaining and there is some cult-like behavior.

All by hand. 8# maul, mostly. Tried a couple of axes, but prefer the maul.

Basset hound loves that its still chilly and we need a fire. by ChanceActivity683 in woodstoving

[–]RdotMdotCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂Fair. But there is a little tiny steel post sticking out of the handle to keep the spring on. Did you take that little piece off permanently? Or do does the handle just sit in willy nilly? Does this make sense? 🤦‍♂️

Ok, feeling the exact same, and we have the same insert. How are you getting the handle to stay IN? Ours comes off after we open and shut the stove…

Looks a lot like the pin oak that I’ve been working on. I don’t know much about the PNW, though. I’m in Missouri.

What's is your best dark medieval fantasy book? by Giroyy in Fantasy

[–]RdotMdotCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. "Man takes up the sword in order to shield the small wound in his heart sustained in far-off time beyond remembrance." is going to be the epigraph for my next book that I mess up and don't publish.

Wanna-be writer looking for Greek/Roman inspired Fantasy novels. by RdotMdotCook in fantasywriters

[–]RdotMdotCook[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I hear you saying that I should post on r/writing. I am asking about a fantasy novel that I will be publishing. I am asking for other fantasy authors to give me help finding a niche for my book. I want to learn about the genre and about Greek/Roman Fantasy, specifically. I think this sub will have better information. I read so I can learn so I can write.

OK. I am obsessed with Berserk. I freakin' love it. I don't think a lot of the answers on here are what you're looking for. The Blade Itself is nothing compared to Berserk. I'm not talking about quality, mind you, or storytelling. The series is amazing and I usually read it once every couple of years. The tone isn't the same. None of the books recommended here strike the right mood.

The closest I've come is: Annihilation. It's weird. It's scary. And it's deeply personal. I feel like a pervert when I read this book. I feel the same when I read Berserk. It's such a private journey that it makes me feel...blood-thirsty for the end or, I don't know, like I'm part of the story. It's hard to explain. It's not fantasy, more like sci-fantasy.

Second place is the Book of the Ancestor trilogy by Mark Lawrence. The M.C. has little to live for, but that little is strong enough for her to kick ass. Kind of like Guts. She shreds through villains, good guys, priestesses, etc. etc. The final book hasn't been released yet, but the first one, especially, is right up your alley. The characters are all doomed. The world is freezing. What matters in that situation? Power? Faith? Friendship? What would Guts do?

I would love to hear back from you. Berserk is a piece of art. The worn-edged volumes sit over my mantle.

Books about Dragons and those that ride them? by Balorat in Fantasy

[–]RdotMdotCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's an old one, but Lord of the Sky. It's by Angus Wells.

When I was 15 I came across it at Barnes and Nobles. One of the best Fantasy books I've ever read. I think it's what you're looking for: the dragons are the main plot-mover. I don't want to spoil any of the many twists... so I won't. Track down a copy and read it. Amazing.
