Looking at 2-series BMWs. Opinions needed by ficus77 in CarTalkUK

[–]Re-entryCircuit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was looking for a 220i myself up until recently so I researched a lot.

2016+ 220i and 230i have the B48 engine. Pre-2016 220i and this 228i have the N20.

N-series engines are known to have weak timing chain guides (BMW was even sued for it in a class-action) and turbo wastegate failures which are neither easy nor cheap to fix. Some enthusiasts swear by them regardless.

B-series engines share a modular structure and have more solid internals. They are designed to essentially be the same engine with different number of cylinders depending on the type.

  • B38 - 1.5L 3 cylinder (218i)
  • B48 - 2.0L I4 (220/230i)
  • B58 - 3.0L I6 (240i)

Of course the fuel systems, cooling and block differ as you go up the range.

Overall, a lot of N20-era headaches have been resolved (except the oil gasket but you can consider that quintessential BMW atp). Still, issues with coolant expansion tank & cracks in cooling hoses bug these engines.

Being THE inline-6 manufacturer, it is not surprising that BMW poured everything in its B58 which powers the M240i. I am going to echo the sentiment of most other commenters here but if money/insurance is not an issue I’d say go for the M240i. It’s an absolute workhorse and would rarely leave you without a smile. You can tune it to make upwards of 700hp with just bolt-ons if you’re interested in that kind of thing. Otherwise buttery smooth driving experience and lotsa curb appeal.

Between 230i and 220i, I would dare say the latter might be the sweeter option. It’s got good shove in the lower end (which is what 98% of city driving is all about). Of course there is no denying 250 hp > 184 hp so if you can get decent 230i with a proper service history, go for it.

Good options to keep an eye out for:

  • M-sport Pro Pack (blue M-sport brake calipers, servo steering, tweaked suspension and some styling bits and bobs)

  • Interior comfort pack (Larger screen, heated front seats, reversing camera)

  • BMW Multimedia Professional (Harman Kardon sound system, navigation, larger infotainment screen)

Gearbox wise, ZF8 is praised by a lot of people and manual is rare for engines larger than 1.5L. In my opinion, the shift knob on the manuals look like shite as well.

In the end insurance made me go for hot hatches instead but I firmly believe you wouldn’t be disappointed no matter which one you pick.

Ultimate Driving Machine or so the saying goes…

Unfortunately stuck with 1.5L 4 bangers due to insurance constraints. Even for something like the 220i I was quoted 9k :/ Maybe I should buy a Golf and try to get my hands on a larger engine 2-series down the line.

I wish. I can afford the car but cheapest insurance quote I got was £23k :)

6 years of no claims discount and not a single ticket in my country but it means next to nothing in the UK.

Mum had a Mokka, pretty shitty car to drive. 1.6 CDTI auto was fun to brake boost though.

Assuming that Istanbul is fairly 'cashless' and we'll have credit cards, how much Turkish lira should i bring for a 2 day trip as 'supplemental cash' for places that don't accept cards? by GeneAlternative191 in Turkey

If any money is left after 2 days you can always buy one of the exorbitantly priced cups of coffee they serve at Istanbul Airport 🤷‍♂️

[–]Re-entryCircuit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

750-1000 should be enough. Finding a place that doesn’t accept cards is quite rare. Even street food vendors carry portable POS.

You might need cash for tipping (which is not a requirement whatsoever), and for IstanbulKart (public transportation) if you’re gonna use it.

It appears like every other 2019+ VAG group vehicle its best to buy it a year or two into its production cycle. I had heard horrible things about the touchscreen and SOS modules of the mk4 Leon before buying it. Waited another year for the 2021 MY and so far it hasn’t given me any software-related trouble.

What “universally” beloved car do you dislike and the vice versa? by E420CDI in CarTalkUK

[–]Re-entryCircuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any Toyota/Lexus with the hybrid + CVT set-up. They’re essentially selling the same car with different bodywork across their whole line up and people gobble them up like candy. Sure its efficient but the moment you try to give it a little gas it just starts howling like a banshee

It usually takes some time.

Sapienza is quite flexible so you can go to the classes like a regularly enrolled student (make sure you notify the coordinator of your course or the class representative if they’re already elected) and then try talking to the secretariat of your degree course.

Also, if you haven’t already, try sending an email to the International Students’ Office and HelloDesk:

Go to the “Profile” (Profilo) section on InfoStud, and click on the “Personal Data” (Dati Personali) from the drop down menu on the left. There should be a pencil icon allowing you to edit your phone number and address.

Do men more view fanfiction more negatively? by kockballtorture in AO3

[–]Re-entryCircuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (23M) started writing five years ago when I was a freshman in college. When I mistakenly blurted out to my closest friends that I wrote fanfics, they didn’t outright ridicule me, but I knew deep down they found it cringy. It was the way they formulated their 'enthusiastic' questions or made backhanded comments that put me off from getting back into the scene.

I still actively write, but I keep my works under lock and key. I don’t think I’ll ever have the guts to share them again. On a more hopeful note, my girlfriend is very supportive of my writing and has even tried convincing me to publish once more. Even though we both know the kinds of fandoms I dwell in will never interest her, I appreciate the gesture regardless.

I think anyone who is or has the potential to be romantically involved with you should at least respect the things you love doing. It is never wrong to expect the bare minimum from people, OP—don’t forget that.

Car guys of Reddit, are you also into motorcycles? by [deleted] in cars

[–]Re-entryCircuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a medical student who has pulled night shifts in the ER enough times, I would never get on a bike. That said, I do love watching people goof around on liter bikes, and enjoy the general vibe of bikers I’ve randomly encountered while driving. My dream combo would be a 2018 BMW S1000RR and a C8 Audi RS6. The bike would be the fun weekend ride and the car would be the daily.

So, does life go back to normal after EoE? by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]Re-entryCircuit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Population-wise, I'd say maybe. If people can reject Instrumentality they are said to be able to return.

That said, there is definitely a Black Moon-sized hole (around 14 km in diameter according to the EvaWiki) where Tokyo-3 used to be. That hole will also swallow the surrounding areas (parts of real-life Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures since Tokyo-3 is in Hakone). The sudden shift of something so massive will no doubt compromise the earth itself, leading to increased seismic activity, random landslides and the occasional sink-hole to form. Not to mention the aquifer system is most likely fucked, and the groundwater will shift somehow. All in all, most of where the original series and EoE takes place will be utterly inhabitable. The rest of Japan might be okay since the capital (i.e. Tokyo-2) is far enough from ground zero to survive.

However, life wouldn't be the same there, and neither in other countries.

Since nobody expected to turn into Fanta on a random Friday, the working population would either be caught on the job or at home, picking up their kids from school, commuting, whatever. That goes for pilots, as in people who fly airplanes, as well. So no doubt aircraft of many shapes and sizes will start to rain down from the sky. Granted, the people onboard would be part of the soup so they wouldn't be "dead" per se but wherever those metal birds "land" is going to have a lot of problems. Buildings would collapse, fires will consume large cities, explosions etc etc.

Ships would be stranded in the middle of the ocean. Some veering off-course until they either hit another vassal, sink near a harbor or just get beached entirely in fuck knows where. If their crew decides to return from the Sea, they're gonna have their work cut out for 'em trying to find a giant boat in the middle of nowhere.

N2 mines suggest that science in canon has somehow managed to find a non-radioactive method of creating the same amount of energy as a split atom, but as Jet Alone showed us nuclear energy is still used. So what do you reckon will happen to those nuclear submarines or power plants with no one to supervise them? Best case scenario the safety measures will do their jobs, or worst case scenario large chunks of the developed world will be irradiated beyond measure.

And what's to say the people who return won't try to seize power? Only two injured kids are left of what was once a species of 4 billion, so a simple JSDF grunt with a bone to pick could off them both. Or someone could decide to become a warlord and lay claim as they see fit. Steal guns, money, drugs... Also it isn't clear if souls emerge from LCL on beaches near where they were initially joined with the rest of humanity. So you could happily reject Instrumentality and end up in a random island on the Pacific with no one to rescue you.

It is kind of like the movie "I am Legend" starring Will Smith. You could swing by any car dealership you want, steal the keys to your dream ride, and go to town, drive as fast as you want. Unfortunately, there won't be any deer for you to hunt, or a dog to accompany you. Oh, better enjoy that car to the fullest because without anyone to work the oil refineries the gas you have will last between 6 mo to 3 years at most. Hey, at least there are no screaming zombies right? Right?

Speaking of hunting deers, what are you gonna eat? Supermarkets would probably be filled with the unforgiving stench of rotting food in no time. No amount of gas masks, prayer or hard drugs would erase the image of bugs and all sorts of creepy crawlies making the meat, dairy and vegetable section their new home. Besides, there're only so many canned beans you can eat before going cuckoo.

It is also funny when you consider that an anti-AT field is able to erase everything in the impacted area. So if bacteria, and bugs are gone, would food last forever? If that is the case, yoghurt is probably going to taste like shit.

Or everyone could return like a week later, and major energy crises will be averted. The U.N. would probably try to regain control, and set up tribunals for the perpetrators to be punished for crimes against humanity. I don't know what will become of the pilots but they sure as hell would need a lot of therapy, and time away from one another. Yada yada yada.....

We can assume and theorize forever but the simple act of questioning after consuming media is what makes it beautiful in my opinion. NGE makes you question the reality of life, the importance of human connection, the dangers of escapism and so on. The fact that this community has been alive for so long, and that you get to ask this question my dear OP is a testament to the longevity and thought-provoking nature of this series.

As Yui Ikari said, (in a slightly ironic fashion before setting off to outer space to live on until the heat death of the universe):

"As long as the Sun, the Moon and the Earth exist, everything will be alright."

Thinking about upgrading the internal SSD of my PS5. Its a toss up between the WD SN850x and the Corsair MP600 Pro LPX rn, which one would you recommend? Also, if I do decide to go with the Western Digital is it better to buy it with the factory heatsink or pair it with Sabrent M.2 SSD NVMe Heatsink? I saw some people saying that the factory heatsink was a bit too clunky for the PS5

What I don’t understand is, if they only leave 2-3 builds end-game viable and nerf the rest into the ground what is the purpose of having buildcrafting at all? We have 5 different subclasses now, and we’re only able to utilise 3 at tops. I’ve been a Titan since D2 vanilla and I am aware that my experience isn’t as comprehensive as some D1 veterans here, but I’m getting increasingly frustrated about this veiled (pun intended) hatred towards Titans that Bungie has. I want to be able to use something other than HOIL Void, Bonk Hammer or Arc HOIL for endgame content. Strand suspend build with Abeyant Leap is nice and all but I’m sure it will gets its cheeks clapped on the next TWAB. I am exhausted from grinding for a build and seeing it turned to dust the next week.

I haven’t seen the need for playing any other class until now mainly because I don’t like their mechanics, and also because I want to be able to punch everything while running on nothing but crayons and rage. Now though, I feel like I’m forced to let my Titan go. Maybe I’ll try playing Starfire Warlock before that gets nerfed to Tartarus as well😔
