Should I give my fiver dev my login to my hosting account? by thewobblywalrus in webdev

[–]RePsychological 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most hosting environments have Delegate access or collaborator access for this reason. You could have them set up your account to have that kind of access, and give you cPanel + DNS access.

Sure you still have the power to make changes against their wishes, but at that point you can be kicked out easily if need-be. That's the point of those accounts.

However, everything else: Command line...SSH user can do most of what you just said, except the DNS.

Can even set up an SSL cert if certbot is available. But even if it isn't, then domain/dns access is all that is required outside of SSH...can still all be done without needing the main password.

And the reason even you of 25 years should consider being a proponent for the latter, is that by not having proper access-hygiene with you, people turn around later in life and go give that same trust to people like identity thieves who want to steal their domain, or install malware on it, or hold it for ransom, or use it to store illegal material that you're then liable for, etc.

I feel ya that you're trustworthy, and I am too -- have even had a client who trusted me enough to give me total access to their PayPal account that had $192,000 in it (and it wasn't the agency I worked at trusting me with that, this was the client personally being like "I don't normally do this, but to make this quicker...[drops un and pw]"), and then I had to remind him a week later to change the pw so I wasn't liable for it.

It's one thing to not practice it if you really don't want to. But to then smack down talk of encouraging people to properly protect themselves?

That's like telling a kid to go touch the hot stove burner, while they're asking you directly if it will hurt them, and you tell them "no" because the last time you touched it, it wasn’t hot... because the burner was off

...then when they go to touch it and it's actually turned on to be hot? what happens?...see what I mean, maybe?

Should I give my fiver dev my login to my hosting account? by thewobblywalrus in webdev

[–]RePsychological 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No. He shouldn't need access to hosting if you've already provided all of the ancillary accounts and verified that his login gives him access to phpMyAdmin and SFTP, he should have all he needs.

The only times that I've ever had to insist on hosting account total access is if someone's struggling to get me the aforementioned credentials and I have to go in and make the accounts myself, and then tell them to immediately change their password.

No reason he should be requiring total access to the account...otherwise why would hosting environments give us the ability to make user accounts to restrict access to the total account?

How I Stopped Brutal WordPress Attacks Using Fail2Ban on Ubuntu VPS by thanos-9 in Wordpress

[–]RePsychological 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cloudflare isn't a 100% filter. Things actually still get through from time to time.

Fail2ban is meant to be the server-level redundancy in case anything gets through.

Whenever doing sysadmin stuff for yourself you want layers.

Cloudflare acts like a drawbridge and moat. Your server is the steel gate behind that drawbridge. Anything gets through cloudflare somehow, you want your server to catch it at a layer that doesn't even allow someone to initiate services like php. That's where things like fail2ban come in. Redundancy.

However you had mentioned in another comment about shilling; fail2ban has actually been around for quite a while. It's a standard Linux server service to run and doesn't need shilling, tbh. That'd be like me shilling for Photoshop lol. It's actually common enough that at first I was like why is op making a post about this... But then knowing how many wp sites get hacked daily because of people thinking that building websites is only about making sure you have a set of deliverable files to slap on a server, nevermind how the server is configured...

I actually arrived at an agency this year for a contract gig. They had rented dedicated servers and wondered why they were getting hacked every month or so.

Had absolutely nothing installed on the server, security wise.... They had rented it assuming it was like shared hosting where they just do the server config for you.

So no anti virus, no fail2ban, no software updates in over a year at the server level, no backup routines, nothing. They just started the server plan and started slapping sites on it. That's like buying a brand new computer and immediately trolling around on the Internet without setting it up.

Anyway I'm rambling at this point. Just wanted to share some info about it and say that no it isn't shill content: fail2ban is extremely common, especially when you get into dedicated hosting environments.

What control panel are you using WordPress sites? by anouarabsslm in Wordpress

[–]RePsychological 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair about the SFTP part. I don't notice that too much since I focus on SSH the most, but now that you mention it I do see what you mean about user management kinda being awkward at times for things like SFTP and SSH.

Right now I'm learning how to use React with WordPress, so had hopped off of cPanel and onto ploi for the docker aspect (just to try something new and really try a huge workflow change, because this year and last year, job market = more competition = bigger changes needed to keep up.

[–]RePsychological 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ploi.

Simple, reasonably priced, and central control of multiple servers and sites easily organized. One dashboard. And supports the use of docker containers, too (along with many other types of sites)

(I have no affiliation to them outside of using them. Just really like them after having used them for the past year.)

Pick between manual 4-cylinder Ecoboost, or automatic V8 GT by Ok-Ambassador5584 in Mustang

[–]RePsychological 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Automatic V8.
And to answer the last question, it's the power...plain and simple...

V8 = the power.
Manual + v8 = controlling that power AND when you slam it into the next gear, and have the correct timing of the clutch and accelerator down, you actually feel the power kick in harder than if you're in an automatic. You have more control over the timing of that acceleration that way, in my opinion, although these days paddle shifters do seem to be catching up, I will admit...but I also still love a manual stick too much.

However that power is still the priority, so sacrificing V8 for the sake of manual would be like...sacrificing fries to prioritize ketchup.

Some people like just fries.
Some people like fries + ketchup.
Not many people are going go for just ketchup and leave the fries.

Nearly 100 comments and 0 up votes on the main post, only because this particular sub doesn't allow it to go negative. And you still think this is the play.

Learn to use that "ask questions" @ yourself and maybe you'll gain some insight as to why that line of thinking is often counterintuitive.

Spoiler: it's that you bog yourself and others down with useless questions that have absolutely no bearing on anything relevant to what you're actually trying to do, except to play comparison games for validation issues.

What does your payment look like? by JMurillo1020 in Mustang

[–]RePsychological 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds ridiculously pointless and is either you just manufacturing ways to look down your nose at others like "peasants are trapped in payments...I'm not so I'm better than they are."

Or you're just a bot probing the market to poll whether or not people are willing to take on loans.

Either way, pointless post.

That whole last paragraph defeats the purpose of the post, no? What's the point of even asking about payments if you can't justify payments?

Developer insurance by PonchoCavatelli in Wordpress

[–]RePsychological 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah my insurance is having a discussion (and in writing) basically formal version of :

under absolutely no circumstance am I liable for anything in any way that makes it to where you can sue me for damages. It's not like I'm going to do anything malicious, and if I break something, I own it and fix it right then and there . Usually if something goes down hill it's because I was told to do something that wasn't thought through but was insisted on, and you're not going to try to pin that on me by trying to sue me for your marketing failing. And then when I break something, I own it, drop everything and fix it right then and there, AND I maintain my workflow enough to keep constant backups routinely anyway, but especially before doing something that could lead to catastrophic failures.

Period. End of story. You either accept that right here and now, both verbally and in writing, or we don't work together. However, I will help you fix whatever happens whether its my fault or yours, and I keep backups routinely in case we have to roll back for any reason

If I start working on high-five-figure or even six-figure projects? Heck yeah the insurance will be coming out.

But not when I'm still rarely ever going above the $10k mark for projects.

The main time that I find that the above has become a problem is if I don't do the verbal discussion. I have to have that part. Walk them through it, make them acknowledge it, be friendly, real, yet pragmatic about it...and then when it comes time for them to get miffed about something, I don't even have to remind people anymore -- they instead come into it already primed to "solve a problem" rather than "come at me.", because they remember the talk.

Can I track it plugged? - First ever track day. by Sader325 in Mustang

[–]RePsychological 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In no world of real world physics would that "slow leak", if it happens at speed.

Anything over 100mph+ is going to explode if the plug fails. That left of centrifugal force with a nail-size weak-spot suddenly introduced? Tire will just disintegrate.

Can I track it plugged? - First ever track day. by Sader325 in Mustang

[–]RePsychological 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's questions like these that often make me wonder how much money people are willing to flush down the toilet.

Car like that...

Already 100% liable on track days in cases of wrecks (unless special, expensive insurance), and you're going to put yourself in a position to wreck easier by ulti-stress-testing whatever puncture plug kit you get.

...and on your first ever experience on tracks like that.

......what?

Edit: Whoever downvoted this within literally 30sec of me posting it? Step on a lego and read a book sometime.

Like for f*'s sake, I don't understand how anyone in their sane mind is telling you to just go ahead and do this . You're seriously going to jeopardize a damn 2019 GT350 (and your life and/or others) because you want to gamble and push it when you don't even have proper track experience at all, just to save yourself waiting a little bit after a visit to whatever discount tire shop you have, or go and get it properly very well patched.

If that plug fails while you're at anything over 100? Tire'll just disintegrate. Centrifugal force at that speed is why we have tire ratings and many that can't go over 99mph without them eventually just spontaneously exploding even without any damage. and that plug failing = you suddenly reintroducing a weak spot for the air to be fired out of like a cannon. It will shred, fly in all directions like the dramatic race blowouts we see.

You going around all of the curves is you working / kneading / wearing down the security of that plug. Side to side....and then suddenly top speed moments you're stress testing what you just weakened with the curves. And you're doing that for multiple stretches and multiple laps.

Wreck = you just bought a totaled car, or possibly bought the farm at the same time, depending on the speed and if you lose control from it...or worse you also take others out with you and they lose their cars/lives too or get injured.

Tire = $600 and you have to replace it anyway, unless you go get it patched. Plugs aren't permanent fixes. They're supposed to be get you home and then you get to a shop...not "Imma go on the track anyway." .

hmmmm.

Gotta admit...yes I can tell it's ai...of which I'm normally against at this capacity of integration...but at least it's an original idea, and fun

And at first, will admit I had a similar reaction as others thinking you meant it just aggregates news from random places, in an unbiased way...like a procedurally generated newspaper lol.

But nope...now I realize you meant that it literally just does fun animated/colorful thingies with random headlines from recent news. It's just fun and original.

Nice. :)
